Re: Official Porsche Winter Tires Recommendations for 2004/2

I drove my E39 M5 for three seasons on 235/45 17" Dunlop Winter Sports and had absolutely no problem...once I got them on!

BTW, this is the other issue I am having with Porsche's snow tire recommendations: whereas BMW recommended a smaller wheel and narrower tire, Porsche is recommending the same 295/30 rear and 245/35 front and the same 19" wheels. Fritz suggested this is because of the 911 weight distribution.

I'm hardly an expert on the subject myself but am left confused. Initially both Tire Rack and my dealer contradicted Porsche's recommendation.

At least with BMW they made a recommendation that made sense, everyone on BMWM5.com seemed in agreement and the tires were readily available!

Re: Official Porsche Winter Tires Recommendations for 2004/2

The Tequipment website states that the 18" wheel with winter tires will work with both the 997 AND the 997S. I would recommend getting a separate set of winter tires and wheels in the smaller 18" size.

Re: Official Porsche Winter Tires Recommendations for 2004/2

No mention on the US site so far.

Re: Official Porsche Winter Tires Recommendations for 2004/2

yeah...what is PCNA's problem. Although I can't see that there will be a diff between GBR and NA.

The Rennteam snow tyre mine field. :-)

    Paul,

I'm not surprised at the confusion. If you go back and search the archives, you will see that Christian and I disagree on this subject. As you can see from Christian's response, he believes that only factory approved tyres should be fitted to performance cars. His logic is simple. The factory has tested these tyres and approved them for use. Remember also that Christian is operating in a world where only approved tyres may be fitted. A German registration certificate will spell out specifically which tyres may be mounted. A tyre dealer in Germany will not mount other tyres. And if they were mounted the car would not pass its TÜV inspection.

I agree with Christian in so far as the stamp of approval by the factory likely being a good sign that the tyres will work properly on the car (though I've had repeated problems with factory approved tyres and the factory was unwilling to stand behind those tyres).

But I disagree with him on how exclusive that list is. Basically, my feeling is that sometimes non-approved tyres are acceptable but that if you fit them then you need to do your own research. The tyre manufacturers also certify their tyres to meet certain standards. That is one indicator. Another is other's experiences.

Oh, by the way, guess how a tyre manufacturer gets its tyres on the factory approved list at Porsche? Why by promising to provide the factory with X number of tyres at incredibly cheap prices. The tyre manufacturer makes up for this loss by knowing that over time it is guaranteed to sell XX tyres at retail. Its quite a scam!

One point I do agree with Christian on is not dismounting and remounting these super low profile tyres if at all possible. They really do get ripped off the rims. It is very destructive and the damage is not visible. I have had a tyre blow-out possibly due in part to this. So if you intend to use the tyres over more than one season then I would seriously consider buying a second set of rims (check eBay for deals on take-offs).

    Good luck!

    Stephen

Re: The Rennteam snow tyre mine field. :-)

For those interested. I got a quote from Wheel Enhancements for the Carrera III 18" wheel and the Continental winter tires that are Porsche approved. Go figure...a independent California wheel shop has the wheels/tires and local Porsche dealers and PCNA don't...

Re: The Rennteam snow tyre mine field. :-)

    Stephen,

Thanks for the feedback. You have a beautiful looking TT. Makes me feel better about getting an Arctic Silver 997S - which is all my dealer had available. Hopefully later this week!

I think I'll take your advice and get another set of wheels. Amazing how both Tire Rack and my dealer said not to bother.

I have the 19" tires on order. Do you think 18" would be more advisable, though Porsche recommends 19" as did Tire Rack?

For my M5, BMW recommended 17" versus the stock 18" but this might have been more to do with tire availability than technical preference and a lot of northern European owners went with 18".

    Paul

Re: The Rennteam snow tyre mine field. :-)

Definitely the 18" wheels will be better in snow than the 19" wheels

Re: The Rennteam snow tyre mine field. :-)

Still being told that the US snow tires are not available...best guess is mid Jan(??)

Stephen, you don't have to be a "rebel" all the time, sometimes it doesn't hurt to go by the rules.
Porsche has not only tested and approved the N-rated tires, they are SPECIFICALLY DEVELOPPED for that specific Porsche model and this is why I only recommend Porsche approved tires. Porsche doesn't take a tire from a manufacturer, test it and put the N-rating on it. This is not the way it works. And to make it easier for you as an all-time "rebel": think about the N-rated tires like as if they were "custom made", especially for your car. Or do you really want to use a "mass product", made for the ordinary law-obeying people?
Sorry that I'm a little bit harsh on you right now but I don't make compromises regarding tires and tire pressures.
Maybe this example helps: take the Carrera GT. It is a very special car with a very special suspension system and although it has an electronic traction control system, it completely lacks a PSM-like (ESP) system. It took a lot of testing and a crashed CGT, personally driven by Walter Röhrl, to learn about how important the tires are. Whoever goes for non-approved tires on the CGT must be completely NUTS because the CGT tires use different compound mixtures on the exterior and interior of the tire. The same technique has been used for the 997 and Boxster, you'll be surprised about the improvement.
Regarding the TÜV, you're not right (seems you haven't been for a long time to Germany): the TÜV doesn't ask for a specific tire, even if the car manufacturer mentions the tire in the car documents. Only the right size and speed index are mandatory with the exception of tuned car where the TÜV can specify a specific tire and even the tire pressure.

Guys, I don't care what you use on your cars, you can use your grandmother's old stockings if you want to. I'm just trying to help you guys by indicating the best possible tire for you. You don't want to listen to me? Heck, I'm not your mother, right?!

Tried to order a set of - 235/40 R18 91V M+S (front) 265/40 R18 97V M+S (rear) Continental Winter Contact TS 810 N0 But UK porsche and Continental have said they cant get the front 235 tire, this is madness on a car costing Pounds70K

    Recommended tire pressure:
18'': 2.5 bar (front) and 3.0 bar (rear)
19'': 2.5 bar (front) and 3.0 bar (rear)
These are the recommended tire pressures for a fully loaded car but we recommend them anyway for a less loaded car too because the standard recommended tire pressure refers to a car loaded to two persons without luggage only.

    For Americans:
    2.5 bar = 36.3 psi
    3.0 bar = 43.5 psi

I ordered a set of CIII wheels and the 18" Contiwintercontact NO tires in December from my US Porsche dealership. There were over 30 sets in Germany according to their computer. It took my Parts Manager a grand total of 1 second to order them...They're awesome...

Re: Official Porsche Winter Tires Recommendations for 2004/2
