I drove my E39 M5 for three seasons on 235/45 17" Dunlop Winter Sports and had absolutely no problem...once I got them on!
BTW, this is the other issue I am having with Porsche's snow tire recommendations: whereas BMW recommended a smaller wheel and narrower tire, Porsche is recommending the same 295/30 rear and 245/35 front and the same 19" wheels. Fritz suggested this is because of the 911 weight distribution.
I'm hardly an expert on the subject myself but am left confused. Initially both Tire Rack and my dealer contradicted Porsche's recommendation.
At least with BMW they made a recommendation that made sense, everyone on BMWM5.com seemed in agreement and the tires were readily available!
