I totally get that, but it’s an entirely different approach. You don’t tackle corners with it obviously, it’s more about the way it looks and smells. The way it sounds and the way it’s so far removed from anything you’re used to these days. That said I completely get why some people are not into it, I was supposed to take it out for an old oldtimer rally today and ended up taking the Porsche because I felt like actually driving.

SmileySmiley. You know my view all long has been  -  as long as it puts a smile on your face when you glimpse it round the corner of your garage or when you sit in it  - that's all that counts. Now when is that Phantom 8 arriving  - that corners beautifully SmileySmiley.

    Beautiful car Frank.

Got me thinking. My dad had a 250CE in the early 70's - one of my earliest memories is a Labrador puppy jumping out of the car as my 4th birthday present.

I recall the petrol tank was accessed via the rear of the car to the right of the number plate (like in the photo below I found on the web - not his car though wish he had kept it!).

Is your fuel tank accessed in the midline behind the plate, or is it offset to the right and it is simply a large Euro plate obscuring the access?

    regards

    David

In mine the fuel tank is accessed dead centre, the numberplate is hinged and it flips backwards.

Car is in the workshop for some gentle restauration before I'll begin using the car. Will take it on a roadtrip to Italy etc.. this summer. This is the list of things they will change on the car, after that she should be fresh as a daisy.

    Maintenance

    • Oil + filter
    • Fuelfilter
    • Sparkplugs
    • Airfilter
    • Verdelerkap + rotor (don't know translation)
    • Flush cooling system + change coolant

    New shocks (worn)

    Brakes

    Belts compressor air suspension, alternator,...

    Tires Dunlop SportClassic.

    Windshield + seals

    Exhaust

I wish! It's really tempting to go all AMG on it (well it's now done at Brabus) and bore it to 6.8 and 450hp but I resist. It's kept fully original.

It drives nicely, especially the engine but for example the shocks make it feel underdamped and it crashes over potholes so fresh shocks will transform the ride I think. Another annoying thing was the windnoise >100km/h which was due to old window seals, so that will also make a big difference. The other refreshments are mostly to make sure it will be reliable on long trips.

I always found putting new shocks, bushings, etc on old cars really transformed the way they drove.

    Great projectkiss

A good friend of me has right now a 1966 W112 300SE Cabriolet in PART-restauration...approx. cost 150.000€ plus the car...smiley

Before the restauration, we made a night cruise through the city...wonderful cars...

I think it’s great your keeping this old beauty on the road!

I hope in 2065 someone is still putting a few miles on my Porsche when it’s 50 years old...

    Re: 1969 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3

Meanwhile the restauration is almost complete, done is:

    • Airfilter
    • Sparkplugs
    • Sparkplug cables
    • Rotor
    • Discs and pads front and rear
    • Compressor belt
    • Water pump and belt
    • Window seals
    • New shocks front and rear
    • Steering damper (whatever that is)
    • New intake
    • Wheel bearings front
    • Fresh tires

Now they're working on a gearbox leak and re-sealing it, and then it will be finished. Ready for Goodwood Revival!

Not really, but you know how it goes with these things. "Now we're changing this, we might as well do this, and this, ..." And Mercedes obviously adjusted their prices for their classic parts accordingly. Smiley

my Tuthill car has gone far beyond what was initially planned for the exact same reason. but then I also think that this is the perfect time to do everything as the car is back to a shell....

Cool project ๐Ÿ‘ is there any way to lower it a bit front and rear to make it handle better? Also be the stock rims were pretty narrow, do you plan to change them or maybe even roll the fenders slightly?

I'd love to go don to this route, but feels wrong to do it to a good example. I should pick up a rusty one and build it up with this in mind:

Out of curiosity, why don’t you get a rusty one for that Mongolia Rallye already? It would hurt me to wear down such pristine example in these conditions.
