    There is a Substitute

The vague Porsche malaise, 992 disappointment and ruminations on the definition of a sports car on the board got me wondering about a replacement.  If your Porsche disappeared, what would you replace it with?  Some here are lucky enough they might not even notice, but I have just one car, and it lives outdoors in the city.

We've seen some members move to Lambo, Ferrari or McLaren.  I might be tempted if Lotus made anything remotely practical (though then it wouldn't be a Lotus).   I could walk out of the Porsche dealer with anything, but won't drive a car with a big wing.  I would love a Touring, but rarely get to 5000rpm, so it would be like owning an Irish Wolfhound in a studio apartment.  While it wouldn't put a smile on my face every time I got in, a Mini would be 90% as fun, much more practical and I wouldn't ever have to worry about parking it.  You?

    Re: There is a Substitute

    Well said, agree fully.

I would suggest an older 911, so much character

Driving not faster then 100 km/h and in urban - sub urban areas .  The Performante would be frustrating in those conditions , only the sound would be appreciated  + it does not match the topic .

No, it wouldn't. Thats my point. The Performante is in my opinion one of the rare cars you can enjoy even at lower speeds because you really don't have to be fast to enjoy it. Ask my kids. Smiley

    Re: There is a Substitute

having been on the performance bandwagon....I got off of it again....I am not anymore looking for performance numbers that cannot be replicated other than basically sprint attempts to 100 or 200...

I have re-discovered the love for driving classic cars with real input and analog output...

so far recently its been classic 911 with my rally car and the newly acquired 83 targa that will be converted to a second rally car and will be first put to real use in the 2020 lima to cape horn rally.

to me there is more gratification in driving these cars at much lower speeds than todays sports cars are capable of.

Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

    Re: There is a Substitute

Couldn't agree more...I'm on the same boat since 2015 when I bought the first classic, since then they are partners for the weekends. Last weekend I was travelling in my 964C2 in the north and made more than 500Km's!
Absolut in love y the experience!

I've been driving my 964C2 since 1998 and still very much enjoying it!

Take the sound out of the equation , what is left at those slow speeds ? A superb interior to look at , a fighter jet cabin feel . But that's probably it . You'll have the image problem , the attention problem , the unpracticality problem . Not a substitute to the 992 Smiley

With the Alpine you can feel the driving dynamics at these speeds . All is due to the very low weight ( less then 1100 kg ) and the smart chassis set up . Going around a round about becomes fun .

As soon as it was spring I took my 964C4 out again and have been driving it  as my DD since . It has 215k  km . Break assist has gone , so I have to have a very heavy foot in order to break correctly Smiley

The attention problem has vanished...so much positive attention, I just don't care anymore. Smiley Only "problem now": I have to salute people who show me thumbs up and/or talk to me because if I don't, they could think I'm an arrogant ass. Smiley Smiley

The driving feel is extremely sporty, the steering, the chassis, everything kind of tickles all your senses.

No, certainly not a substitute for the 992 as a daily driver (is there any?) but for everything else, it beats it without a doubt.

With the Alpine you can feel the driving dynamics at these speeds . All is due to the very low weight ( less then 1100 kg ) and the smart chassis set up . Going around a round about becomes fun .

I drove the Alpine, it reminded me a lot of the Mazda MX-5 I drove, just stiffer and with a very sharp steering. For me however, this car doesn't do anything, I'd prefer the Alfa Romeo 4C instead because it sounds and looks better. I also didn't like the traction issues and some instability issues during hard braking before curves. The tires could be wider in my opinion, the chassis could also offer a bit less side-roll. So in the end, I liked the steering a lot, the brake also seems to handle the car pretty well (low weight?) but everything else wasn't my cup of tea. I would prefer the 4C or a M2 for the similar money instead. The design isn't my cup of tea at all.

Of course you can feel the low weight of the car but maybe this is the reason why it sometimes felt a bit unstable. Wider tires and a slightly different chassis setup would probably take care of that but I get the feeling that it was intentional.

Maybe the more powerful model will be more interesting but I get the attraction of the car and the new one could be actually the Alpine everyone expected.

    Re: There is a Substitute

That Alpine is out, the S one...

The problem with Chico is weather in the winter... Hard to do all with one car, you must have a SUV...

    Re: There is a Substitute

Hard to beat a second hand 997 / 997 GTS. Trades in England at about half the price of a new 992, great feel, not a classic so you don’t mind having it on the street, and starts every time....
