8 series aside, what's wrong with BMW's new design language? It's worse than the Bangle era, and that's saying a lot. The front grills are just comical.

Bangle era cars are now looking quite restrained in comparison to the cartoonish current models. I came across this render for a modern take on the CS of the 70's and it shows how the classic BMW kidney grilles and headlights can be incorporated on a modern design. This look would suit an electric model and give it some aesthetic gravitas.

I agree that it looses in every way (bar the engine and the comfort) to the 992 at MSRP,  but with these discounts that becomes a total different story: the car above is offered at me for 102k €, it has 4wd (rear biased), convertible, rear steering and every other option + that  V8.

Same money gets you a full option Boxter GTS. Just saying.

992 is totally different car, and I probably end up with one in my garage but I can see why people start trying looking at other marques with Porsche’s latest price policy. It’s getting a bit hard to justify...

BMW has become really boring but I honestly think this is what people want... Smiley

I just saw the new Z4...not sure which model it was and it was lower and had pretty wide rear tires, looked actually surprisingly good (I've seen an early mule and it was boring). Different. I just wish BMW would risk more but instead, they come up with cars like the i8 or that ugly i3 (my son says it is in the same ugliness category with the first Smart generation and the modern VW Beetle and I do not disagree).

It's not only BMW I'm afraid. Latest Mercedes Benzes and Audi's (non AMG/RS) have the same 'boring' problem. I guess it's market driven.

Re: New BMW 8 Series (2018)

The latest BMW and Mercedes designs  are aimed at Chinese tastes according to both companies marketing people. The irony is that the Chinese brands have hired European designers to improve their own offerings. Nio is the latest and hired BMW's original i brand stylings team to design their upcoming ET electric saloon. You could easily put BMW or Audi badges on this car along with appropriate front end grill treatments for either brand as it is so derivative of current German design thinking, right down to the wheel design.

The German brands need to rediscover their styling mojo in the face of competition like this. European designers have taken the Korean brands from being the butt of jokes to credible and substantial players in the market who have toppled the Japanese brands in many markets including Europe. The Chinese brands could achieve the same results if the Europeans don't fight back strongly. Design, warranty cover and purchase price sell cars to the mass market that Audi, BMW and Mercedes have now positioned themselves in. The switch to electric cars may prove to be the crucial turning point for the Chinese to gain a real foothold in Europe and the US.

Smiley I'd love to see something like this with the drivetrain from the i8.

    Here is the rear.

Perhaps VW's idea of offering their electric platform up to other companies to build bodies on like the old coach building days will encourage a renaissance in design from low volume manufacturers.

Dealer gave me a M850i convertible as a loaner. The styling (rear) has yet to grow on me but my god that engine is a peach...super smooth in traffic but put your foot down and it's like surfing a howling wave of pure torque.

I became a fan but taxes are a bit steep over here for these big engines, hence the big discounts to move them. Still debating. Totally different proposals but this barge offers way more car for the (after discount) money than a 992S....without thinking about residuals, that is.

It looks very nice - especially in real.

However - to justify a 150k€ price ticket it misses that "extraordinary something". I dont know, for me it is just another BMW. And naming it 8 instead of 6 doesn't justify its price

Re: New BMW 8 Series (2018)

I like the new 8 very much. In real life it looks much nicer than in pictures and video and with excellent road presence.

Ideally i'd like it to be somewhat smaller, especially since rear accommodation is restricted.

The interior might not be opulent in say, Bentley style but I find it very sporty and attractive; the fact that it resembles the interior of lesser BMWs is positive for me because I like their style very much and their assembly is impeccable. .

The M850i is very expensive indeed but OTOH you can cross a continent in this car without sweat.  IMO the sweetspot of the range will be the petrol 840i RWD coupe (in-line 6, 340PS) to be introduced this summer for much under €100.000.

Depreciation is huge, this is a car you lease and don't buy, unless you get 25% off instantly (and even then, buying could be a mistake). What I don't like about BMWs lately is the lack of soul and driving fun. They are fast but they don't offer much emotions. As a daily driver though, I think the new 8 series is a very good offer if you can get one at a special price or lease rate.

I've been in a M850i as a passenger, unfortunately I have not had a chance to drive it, yet.

It is a fantastic car which covers all bases.

For the €125.000 that BMW asks (before any discounts but OTOH hardly any extras are required) the similarly priced 992 S (before essential extras) offers no contest. If the Porsche Turbo or GT3 were offered at the same price as the M850i, the equation might be different.

How can Porsche not offer RWS, sport exhaust  and Sport Chrono Plus in the basic price in car that is supposed to be the archetypal sports car? Porsche could get away with this pricing policy when the Porsche brand was on a pedestal, before the thousands of SUVs on the roads.

What more you can do in the 992?

It is faster, feels more nimble, it is a Porsche. I've driven every modern BMW with the exception of the new M8 and the M5 Competition and I have to say that none of the cars attract me in any possible way, they are boring. Smiley The 992 is a completely different type of car, you can feel it is a sports car, even if it is more refined and maybe even comfortable. The emotional part has become very important for me when it comes to cars and right now, unless you mount an aftermarket exhaust, all modern BMWs sound like crap. Smiley The only exception is maybe the new Z4, interesting concept but I'd love to see a small capacity V8 n/a engine in this car. It is a bit more interesting than the rest of the model range.

I know this sounds harsh but... Smiley

From a price/performance point of view, BMW is very attractive in Germany. Very good offers, even for high performance models.

BMW are great value in all markets. Unfortunately purchasing decisions are not made in isolation and IMO the basic Carrera models don't offer that so much emotional extra nowadays (notwithstanding some added sportiness) to justify the price differential to the so-called premium brands.

The Porsche GT models are unique but too expensive and with limited practicality

The first reviews of the 850 indicated that the car is more like a comfortable sedan than a sportscar. Not a car to substitute the 992. But very elegant. I like the design (which is rare with BMW these days)...

Re: New BMW 8 Series (2018)

Definitely not a sports car. Certainly not my 840 Diesel. Comfortable, elegant, big trunk if used as a two seater and on a restricted Autobahn you only have to visit the petrol station after 900-1000km. Very good GT. If you don’t need 4 doors/seats it is the better 7 series

Meanwhile I use my car only once or twice a month for a longer trip to my old parents (daily driver is public transport or taxi, on weekends I prefer plane and rental car), for this use case (not the typical rennteam use case) it’s the perfect car.

I had one recall, something  with the co-driver seat had to be exchanged. I had a new X5 as a loaner. To big for downtown Munich, less than 10mm on both sides on the entrance of my garage, stressful

I find it hard to believe they would be compared, they are such different carsyes, both with their own different pros and cons.

Doesn't mean you couldn't cross shop between the two, but not because they are similar cars, but because your are weighing different pros and cons.
