Re: ROAD TEST: New 992 Carrera4S

Congratulations on the new car. I hope you will enjoy it , going back to something more sporty then the Pana.

The 992 is pretty compliant for a confirmation DD, but also very efficient when pushed harder.

    Wonderbar:

Panamera lease was coming to its end, Saw this car at the dealership and leased it for 39 months. Very low mileage —2300—and in flawless condition. I was either lucky, or stupid, or both.wink

BTW, the sport exhaust is plenty loud for me, especially in my quiet neighborhood. Car is quick as a cat. And I surprised myself that I liked the black rims. Stealth.

    Congrats! wink

Re: ROAD TEST: New 992 Carrera4S

Congrats Wonderbar. Agate is a great colour for the car, especially if you want to be low key.

Re: ROAD TEST: New 992 Carrera4S

    Quick personal impressions:

Love the color and gloss black rims.

Plenty quick for me.  Turn in is sharp, sport package is a must for looks, low stance, handling.  Driving position, view are perfect.  Feels very personal.  No one does this better than Porsche. Ride is firm, but confidence building. Launch control is a blast.

Burmester is superb!  Really addictive.  Much better than Bose in my Panny. Expensive but worth it.

Sound is plenty loud, especially in my neighborhood. Not just in cabin, but outside as well.  Very distinctive, IMO,

Very appealing overall design.  Many thumbs ups from neighbors, onlookers.

Trunk space is better than I thought.  Plenty of room for my tennis gear, small suitcases, groceries, etc.

Full leather interior a necessity.  Plastic parts need covering. Shifting paddles are metal, and feel fine.

Door handle auto opening is inconsistent.  Have to use my key button half the time

Console cup holder way too small.  Cup holder on passenger side cramps passenger's space.

Overall thus far, I am super happy with this car...

Re: ROAD TEST: New 992 Carrera4S

Congratulations Smiley IMO the 911 continues to be the most relevant sports car and one of the best personal cars if rear space is not important..

You mention the ride being firm. Is the car specified with the Sport PASM with the extra -10mm?

I don't know in what climate you live, but the choice of AWD was something of a must or you just found  this very nice car that happened to be a 4S?

Re: ROAD TEST: New 992 Carrera4S

Thanks folks. The car does have the sport suspension, which I think is a must for looks and stability at high speeds. And I just came across this car, and it was just to good an opportunity. I live in a mild climate with short winters, and I would not have specified a 4S otherwise. And of course I’m also worried about a recession, but I’m more worried about not living my life as a 78-year-old. I don’t want to “go away“ quietly!

Apologies if this was posted elsewhere.... from a week ago, an EVO print group test of 992, 570, R8, Vantage, and a Lotus.  R8 narrowly on top at the end.  Interesting that one conclusion, was that the 992 is the tipping point where the 911 really has become  too big.

Re: ROAD TEST: New 992 Carrera4S

Having just recently had a Panamera, and now owning a C4S, I have to say that I disagree with the idea that the 992 is a “Baby Panamera”. The Panamera is much bigger in size and feel. Additionally, I, for one, believe that the slightly bigger dimensions of the 992 are fundamentally required to handle the power and overall performance. Racing 911s have gotten bigger out of competition necessity—why not the road going version? Also, my neighbor has a Aston Martin Vantage, which looks absolutely huge in comparison to my 992. I’m not saying a 992 is a perfect car, but I am saying that it is extremely different from the Panamera, not too big for my taste, and in comparison to other “rivals” extremely well proportioned and appealing.

Re: ROAD TEST: New 992 Carrera4S

To be honest, I think the new 992 Carrera is the most refined and "perfect" 911 Porsche has ever put on the market.

And exactly here lies the problem: The 911 has never been historically a "perfect" car and the perfection makes it not only perfect but also...boring.

I like the new 911 a lot but it reminds me of a good old friend you haven't seen for years: You are happy to see him, you missed him but in a way or another, you wish he would be gone again after you spend some time with him because you realize you don't have much in common (anymore).

The only 911 I would like to get is the GT3/RS right now...or maybe even the GT2 RS, all the others (including the new Turbo and Turbo S) are "just" fantastic cars, fantastic 911 but also...boring. The excitement goes away fast and what remains is an emotional turmoil between that traditional 911 love affair and...boredom. This cannot work, unless you are specifically looking for a daily driver in disguise of a 911.

Porsche must be doing something right though because lately, I see many 992 Carrera models around here in Germany and not so many 991 Carrera models anymore. Smiley

RC, I understand that the 992 may not have “the edge“ that other powerful sports cars have. I have known and experienced those types of cars. For me, now approaching my 78th birthday, I’m appreciating some comfort and luxury, along with power, precision and performance. At least for now, until I get the bug to buy something else, the 992 provides me with just enough ease and luxury, with enough performance buried beneath it all, to satisfy me. Porsche’s idea of a daily driver, turning into a beast, is the recipe I enjoy right now.wink

I agree, while the 911 had gotten bigger over generations, so have all cars and sportscars, if you take that into consideration, the comments on the 911 getting huge is an exaggeration imo, it's still relatively small fire a 2+2 sportscar compared is competition. Personally I'm more worried about the significant weight increase in the last 5 years.

What's your point?  Daimler reported a global sales drop of 17.6% for its Mercedes-Benz unit for the first half of 2020.  Porsche reporting a sales drop of 12% is stellar in comparison.  Posting this in isolation without any benchmarking is meaningless.

Daimler is selling a million cars in 6 months. I could return your question and asking what is your point?

PAG is adding another car to the range and yet is suffering by a 12% over 6 months but a 20% drop the last quarter. My point was related to Porsche is selling well in answer to RC for the 992 where the drop in Europe is immense, higher than ever and in Germany it is even worse.

Re: ROAD TEST: New 992 Carrera4S

If I understood the figures well Porsche sold 16.919 units of the 992 models during the first half of 2020.

If you consider that this is a model range starting from €104.000 and half of the range has not been available during the entire period in question, in my way of thinking this is an amazing number of 911s sold.

By way of comparison, It might take McLaren some decades or perhaps a good part of the 21st century to sell this number of their Sports Series cars, provided that they survive Smiley

991+992 in 2019 was about 36k cars with interruption of sale to swap the models, just to compare...

Also, something important to consider is PAG is the VW cash cow and VW is in very deep debt, 192 billions biggest debt for a company in the world. that could turn the story into a drastic change. Smiley

In 2009, General Motors in the redesign of its large SUVs raised prices significantly.  While per units sales dropped, the increase in gross margins per units more than made up for any drop in unit sales.  Porsche knows that the 911 concept is living on borrowed time under the aggressive emission and noise standards in the EU and elsewhere.  Therefore, increasing profitability at the expense of per unit sales is not a faulty tactic.

Re: ROAD TEST: New 992 Carrera4S

    I think delivering nearly 17,000 911 in H1 is an immense achievement given April\May were a right-off.

Makes me reevaluate my position on 992 Cab order in Q4 - meaning I may not get the discount I'm looking for if demand is maintained.
