Re: OFFICIAL: The new Porsche 992 – a design icon and high-tech sports car

    Joost:

Interesting... the car has the sport design front bumper but not the rear?!? So that means it could be done the other way round as well? (I prefer the standard front but the rear bumper, apart for the ungainly separate shields on them).

When ordering someone can option either the Sport design front or the Sport design Paket (front and rear).

The rear only, could be retrofitted as a spare part and omit painting the shields, I presume.

The  shields on the rear aerokit bumper are very ugly indeed, but they should be pretty easy to wrap too I presume.

I don’t think the rear sheilds are so bad, but they are just unnecessary, especially at the cost.

New Porsche 992 GT3 Sounds Brutal on Nurburgring...  1552170150971image.gif

Choosing between the 911 GT3 and the 911 Turbo can be rather difficult for many Porschephiles, but this is a decision we'll have to make soon. You see, Zuffenhausen engineers are currently polishing the final details of the 992-generation Turbo and GT3, with prototype currently going berserk at the Nurburgring (of course).

While we've recently discussed the new Turbo, the time has come to zoom in on the 992 Porsche 911 GT3.

A test car was recently spotted going all out on the infamous German track. And while the prototype might not reveal more skin, it's the aural side we're interested in.

As previous spy material has confirmed, the naturally aspirated flat-six is here to stay and we can say the same about the manual gearbox. And the tester in the piece of footage at the bottom of the page sounds furious, as a flat-six dancing to around 9,000 rpm should.

This is a hint towards dismissing the rumors that claim the 992 GT3 will be a tad less vocal than the car it replaces due to the introduction of the OPF (Otto Particulate Filter).

And we could throw the GT3 and the Nurburgring into the same sentence without talking about the stopwatch - with the outgoing 991.2 model requiring 7:12.7 to blitz the Nordschleife, we could see the newcomer going just under the 7m mark.

PS: Note that the Nurburgring now holds performance industry testing days, where each car is released on the track three minutes after the one before it, so carmakers have a chance to go all out.

This clip was captured during such a day (May 1st) and includes a multitude of stopwatch heroes, with the 992 Porsche 911 GT3 awaiting you at the 2:07 point.

^The GT3 is looking good kiss

I wonder what Porsche's plan is going to be regarding the engine for the EU market. If the 992 GT3 is still going to be NA, then the RS (release 2021/22?) will most probably have some hybrid technology in order to be in accordance with the stricter euronorm 7 (presumably starting 1st of Jan 2023). However, didn't the CEO say that if they go hybrid in the 911, they wouldn't start with the GTx-range, but rather the regular models?

Re: OFFICIAL: The new Porsche 992 – a design icon and high-tech sports car

Porsche's new exhaust has saved the 9,000rpm flat-six

Porsche launched the 911 Speedster this week, effectively a swansong for the old-gen 911 and with the 991.2 GT3’s howling 4.0-litre flat-six sitting pride of place in its rump.

It’s a stupendous engine, revving to 9,000rpm and making one of the very greatest noises on earth as it does so. As a reminder that naturally aspirated engines are often more fun than turbos, it’s as stark as they come.

Happily, Andreas Preuninger – head of Porsche’s GT-badged cars – all but confirmed this isn’t the engine’s swansong, with much of the thanks going to a clever new exhaust system. It incorporates a particulate filter, to lower the car’s emissions, but thanks to the fastidiousness of Porsche’s engineers it’s somehow gained 10bhp and lost 10kg, too.

“This is what happens when you push very good engineers to the limit,” Preuninger tells us. “It has very thin steel sheet soldering which is super light, and losing 10 kilos at the back end of the car – down low – is something you really feel.

“You don’t lose a lot of sound either. This car is a little more well behaved, but it has a more cultured sound, which is okay for a Speedster. It fits the times were living in at the moment a little better.

“The valving in the exhaust is electrically controlled, so it’s continuously moving. We are the only ones with an electric system that can take the heat of an exhaust. If you control the flaps mechanically the sports exhaust is either on or off.”

So, the soundtrack is still pretty exceptional, and friendlier emissions effectively futureproof this engine, too. So surely the next GT3 and GT4 models can duck out of turbocharging, too.

    1557520596073image.jpeg

“We have saved this beautiful creature for the future,” says Preuninger, who wouldn’t be drawn on where we’ll actually see the 4.0-litre flat-six next. “We are trying to keep the flame alive as long as possible. We think the high-revving naturally aspirated engine is an amazing thing that needs saving.” -- Andreas Preuninger

    We couldn’t agree more…

    Too much marketese imho.

Re: OFFICIAL: The new Porsche 992 – a design icon and high-tech sports car

Next Porsche GT3 to get the upgraded 4.0-liter from the 911 Speedster

Porsche is playing back-and-forth with its naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six. The engine serves in the 991.2-series GT3 and GT3 RS, tuned to 394 horsepower and 520 hp respectively. Engineers in Weissach overhauled the motor to comply with incoming European regulations, and added more power before slotting it into the new, 502-hp 911 Speedster. Now, according to Autocar, the upgraded 4.0-liter will head right back to the 992-series GT3 that could debut later this year in Frankfurt.

Andreas Preuninger heads Porsche's GT division, and has said in the past that he wants to power the GT cars with naturally aspirated engines for as long as possible. He told Autocar, "We've invested in the future with this engine. I can't comment on future projects, but we would be stupid not to re-use this engine somewhere." And during the 911 Speedster launch, 911 spokesman Holger Eckhardt said Porsche wouldn't spend on all the engine upgrades for a single model that will sell just 1,948 units.

The flat-six's advances include individual throttle bodies for much better response, higher-pressure injectors with a better spray pattern, and a stainless steel exhaust that's 22 pounds lighter than before even with two Euro-mandated particulate filters.

It's possible the same engine will make its way into special editions of the 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster twins as well. Road & Track reported that the coming Cayman GT4 will get the GT3's 4.0-liter engine, the old 3.8-liter from the older GT4 reserved for the track-only GT4 Clubsport. Carscoops believes that engine in the junior sports cars will come in at around 425 horsepower. Carscoops also reports, however, that there will be Touring versions of the Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder that will also get the 4.0-liter, downrated to perhaps 380 hp.

If all this came to pass, that would mean seven other potential models powered by the 4.0-liter — GT3, GT3 RS, 718 Cayman GT4, 718 Boxster Spyder, two Touring versions of the 718 models, and a Cayman GT4 RS. We haven't heard the Speedster going hard at it yet, but based on a GT3 prototype putting on a flat-six concert at the Nürburgring, we'd have no complaints.

The Corvette easily wins in the sound department and I won't even start with the price tag...the 992 is 52k EUR more. For this kind of money, I can get myself a Mustang GT Bullitt in Germany.

The 992 was 2.9 seconds faster from 0-200 kph than the Corvette but both cars weight aprox. the same (992 is around 20 kg lighter) and are supposed to have the same power. I'm not so sure about that. The 992 certainly profits from it's turbo engine and higher torque but I think that the Corvette is more fun to drive, especially for the money it costs. Of course a Corvette is no Porsche and I am pretty sure I would probably also choose the 992 over the Corvette but let's be honest here, the 992 has become too expensive, no matter how good the car is. Also...a bit more boring and generic. Which is a bit sad but probably unavoidable under the current circumstances.
