Re: Porsche Mission E...the future of Porsche?

Had an interesting presentation at my Porsche dealer last night. Apparently he will be getting 60 Tayan’s already this your for customer delivery. According to him Porsche is already working on an online process to order cars. The dealers are worried about the online sales of Porsche and the impact the Taycan will have on the workshop. The workshop is a major source of income and this will decrease with the electrical cars.

Re: Porsche Mission E...the future of Porsche?

    You mean end of 2019?

Re: Porsche Mission E...the future of Porsche?

    yes

Re: Porsche Mission E...the future of Porsche?

And still no specs, options and no price... that seems like a big stretch...

Why should they be known be so early? Car is not due to be announced until Frankfurt. And that's when the details will be out.

Correct.  Audi released specifications early for the e-tron and when a minor software change was instituted, the vehicle needed recertification.  Nothing changed but the delay in delivers slightly tarnished the reputation of Audi and its new EV.  Porsche will definitely wait to release full specifications at the time of the launch of the Taycan.  What is know is that its prime mover machines are from an LMP race car.

Re: Porsche Mission E...the future of Porsche?

A bit of potential U.S. pricing information from Car Magazine.  Base said to start at $90,000 and rising to $130,000 for the turbo variant.  https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/porsche/taycan/

Re: Porsche Mission E...the future of Porsche?

“Turbo” variant? They are kidding right?

Re: Porsche Mission E...the future of Porsche?

Now that most of the line up has turbo engines, the Turbo badge is just a trim name.

People are used to seeing the range topping model being called Turbo and the one on top of that called Turbo S.

Porsche has logged over 6 million km of testing mileage on the Taycan. And another 10 million km on simulator.

They also tested the car from -35 to +50 degree Celsius.

Think Tesla tested theirs even a 1/4 of that amount?

Another thing, the Gentleman from CNET  said " Up on the Taycan's dashboard, however, it makes a lot more sense. In that now-empty space between the seats, the Taycan offers a second touch interface between, not unlike that found in the Audi E-Tron and other new Audis like the Q8."

I´m expecting a "second touch interface" like the Lambo EVO!!!

No you're right, they've sold almost 400,000 cars but have never done any testing or especially any simulations (they're not tech savvy enough for that...). And unlike every other car company they've never tested through temp ranges and inclement weather. Smiley

They've also sold almost 400,000 cars, all of which upload data back to tesla. Even though the majority of sales are in the last two years let's say that each car on average has 10,000 miles on it. That's 4 BILLION miles of data. Does porsche or anyone else have even a 1/4 of that amount?

I was thinking the same. My guess is, that based on all the telemetry data that they collected, esp about battery degradation, they decided to raise max charging power for quite some part of their fleet via an OTA update.

But then, the Taycan can do this

Re: Porsche Mission E...the future of Porsche?

Sorry, forgot about the Model 3, where traction control can be disabled. Something which is not possible in the Model S, without Tesla internal tools.  Other than that, the Model S is by far the best winter car I ever had

Re: Porsche Mission E...the future of Porsche?

As I have written before, who is buying sedans these days? The car that would make the most sense for EV is a crossover or SUV. Performance and handling should not be the primary concern. Economical and functional transportation are what will be important.

In the lower price range, maybe...

Re: Porsche Mission E...the future of Porsche?

A Porsche EV crossover at $70k with Tesla Model Y Performance specs would destroy Macan, Panamera and Cayenne sales in the USA...

Re: Porsche Mission E...the future of Porsche?

    Like the upcoming Cross Turismo?

Re: Porsche Mission E...the future of Porsche?

That’s more like a station wagon... Very unpopular in the USA...

Re: Porsche Mission E...the future of Porsche?

    Wonderbar:

    Like the upcoming Cross Turismo?

Porsche has announced that the next generation Macan will be an EV and the current model will remain in production alongside the new model.  The next Cayenne will have one or more variants that are purely electric.  Both will be based on the new premium electric platform being developed in conjunction with Audi.

Re: Porsche Mission E...the future of Porsche?

Since the ETron is $75k base, where do you think a Macan EVwould be? My guess is over the price of a Macan turbo...

Again, we know what the roadmap is, it is announced, but what we do not know if how will Porsche manage to price all EVS without killing their other sales...

The point is many here are drinking the Porsche Kool Audi thinking cheap Porsche EV are on the way and will kill off Tesla (and others). In the end, same range/perf Macan will do double the price of a Model Y... That’s no killer... there is room for everyone.

You are the only one here fixated on Porsche, Audi, and fill-in-the-blank building a Tesla killer.

Volkswagen Group, along with several other automakers, announced that production is shifting toward EVs to meet the incoming EU and China, along with the People's Republic of California, standards on carbon emissions.  These automakers view production of EVs as an option in "fuel" sources much like the current choices of petrol, diesel, and CNG; therefore, other than introducing a handful of dedicated EV platforms, Volkswagen Group will also offer alternatives of the same vehicles for petrol, electric, diesel, and CNG.

Difference being, Porsche tested the car first before selling them to customers, Tesla is using the paying customers as guinea pigs.

Since Tesla is leading the way for data collection forefront, Perhaps Porsche will be doing the same with the Taycan?

There are things on the fly over the air update can fix, but there are things about hardware that it' can't be fixed. Hence why pre production testing is crucial.

Right now, Tesla KNOWS their battery can't handle high drain for extend period of time, as someone here have said it, their Tesla goes into semi-limp mode after a while on the autobahn. That's a hardware design flaw that over the air update cannot  correct.
