Red Nipples 991.2 GT3 Touring on tour

The snow is gone in our region and the winter makes a break.

Red Nipples 991.2 GT3 Touring is road registered again and tomorrow the first trip will be to my friend with his motorsport scale to find out how fat the car is, compared to my last year stripper 991.2 Carrera T. (with full tank and PCCB 1.423Kg)

I bought the Touring used from my OPC, so the frist owner sadly ordered some more options like Bose, Lift, Leather. The car has  red brakes and the large fuel tank...so it should be heavier than the T.

Next trip on monday will be to Manthey-Racing at the Nürburgring for a suspension setup and some more...Smiley

In March a Liteblox-Battery will be fitted to the car to compensate some of the options.

I´ll keep you informed with some pics and infos.

Have fun on on the weekend

    Blueflame,

can you tell a bit more about the liteblox battery ? I would be interested into it once I have finally found a GT3.2 RS ( as Porsche doesn’t t want to sell me one new :-) )

is it really interesting weight/price/ performance ?

thanks in advance for feedback !

The batteries are already delivered - I can tell you more firsthand info in March...Smileythe second one ist for my friends Performante Spyder.

Over the last years - this Liteblox-Project was in my head, but I was not brave enough to buy one directly from them. Now, we have with our local Lotus-Dealer, a workshop with full installation-service and warranty for Liteblox batteries. They will install them in our cars - if it´s not working, they have the problem...Smiley

BTW -  the battery causes no problem with Porsche Approved according to my OPC. Smiley

Around 1.500 EUR ist a lot of money for a battery, but you are saving almost 20 KG vs. the OEM Battery....and if you compare it to the "18KG-saving-Weissach Package", it is a real bargain...Smiley

    Pics and report will follow.

    Blueflame

PS Please note, that I have zero connection with Liteblox - this will be just a consumer report...

Re: Red Nipples 991.2 GT3 Touring on tour

    Thanks Blueflame !

this is indeed a good weight reduction . I just looked their site and apparently you need to buy an additional carbon plate for adapting in the RS.

their products look nice, and imth8nk a lightweight battery from Porsche is probably costing same money.

Can’t wait your report, very interested in fact !

Pay 1500 Euro for a battery to save 20kg? Are you a professional driver and race for a living? I'd be curious how much if any your time improves or your car is faster with on a 20kg weight savings. I suspect a good shit will provide the same numbers and its free.indecision

Thanks for your input...certainly you are not able to feel any weight difference on your cars, if you drive through a US city traffic. But if you track your car, you can easily feel, if the fueltank is on 50% or 100%.

My second passion is shifter cart racing...there you can feel 500g difference on the stop watch...Smileyand yes a good shit  bevore the drive helps also...Smiley

BTW your comment comes from a 991.2 GT3 RS driver -  do you know that you have a Porsche crest sticker in the front of your car to save 30g of weight and how much USD you have paid for your carbon fenders and carbon roof on your very nice RS - are you racing for a living?Smiley

Everything what we are discussing here is nuts for normal people, but I‘m a little bit surprised from a comment like yours from a member of Rennteam.Smiley

Blueflame, no doubt I could have more diplomatic. My post was little too harsh. I apologize.Smiley

All I was trying to say is though weight is important for speed and times, track conditions, ambient temperature, tires and many other factors would impact performance as well. To spend about $1800 for a battery is at least to me overkill. I very much doubt the benefit would justify the cost.

BTW, I am aware that Porsche went to extremes in lightening the RS. The crest bugs me because it looks cheap and would have preferred the real thing especially on a $215,000 car.Smiley

Grant, if I do come I will not need a toilet but a large outhouse with a big hole in the ground.Smiley

Are you for real? 20kg is a HUGE difference, especially on track.

And that comment comming from a GT3 RS owner?

Great sunny sunday and the first 200km of 2019 are done.kiss 9.000 rpm...still an experience...indecision

Enclosed some pics of the scale-date at my friend.

So the non-stripper GT3 Touring with a full 90 litres fuel tank is with 1.478 Kg a hefty 55 Kg heavier than the stripper Carrera T with a full 64 litres fuel tank and PCCB brakes.

    Where is the weight?

    26 litres more fuel x 0.75 Kg = +19.5 Kg, red brakes = + 20 Kg, liftsystem + 7 Kg, Bosesound + 4Kg

    = Total ca. 50.5 Kg

That means ca. 5 Kg for LED PDLS, Leather and RWS.

But I am glad that the former owner ordered the liftsystem...without it, the GT3 could not drive in my garage at home. angel

So, tomorrow morning 400 Km to the Nürburgring for a visit at Manthey-Racing.

Walter Röhrl can't feel 20 kg weight difference (I asked, it was about the saving weight by not choosing A/C and PCM) but that's a different story... Smiley I can't feel 20 kg weight difference either (oh wait, I can feel it when it is in the trunk because of the weight distribution) but if it would be evenly spread, I doubt it. You can feel 20 kg unsprung weight difference, that's for sure as well.

I always recommend putting money in (pro) driving ed events, they are better than any weight saving/chassis adjustment measures.

However: I do not know blueflame and his driving skills, so it makes no sense to discuss this any further. If he already optimized his driving skills, going deeper into weight saving and chassis alignment stuff certainly makes sense. Smiley

The battery issue can be felt in a 911, as Porsche mounted it high in the front.

But the knife has 2 edges, while the car will be lighter, the front end will also be lighter so.even less front end grip. The car will not want to turn and one has to trail brake even more to get it turned.

If the battery weight in a 911 makes a performance difference why doesn’t Porsche use a lighter battery? They can easily compensate for the lightness of the front end certainly they are not embarrassed to charge more for it. yes

Nick, as have mentioned, 911 is an odd duck, with the rear engine. The front is already super light to begin with, and with a lighter battery it gets even lighter still. It's not good for handling.

For each generation they tried to shift the weight more forward, but they can only do so much as the passenger compartment is in the way.

AWD cars are better because of the added weight to the front axle, and the system has come a long way since the 959, but it still don't quite have the handling of a 2wd car, they react even better with weight transfer, It's magical to make a 911 dance at the limit, no other cars come close.

Porsche did offered a lithium battery option before if you remembered. It wasn't really good and they have pretty much discontinued it.

What’s ironic is for 99% of us the AMD would provide better performance albeit at the risk of losing feel.

    So it goes.

Re: Red Nipples 991.2 GT3 Touring on tour

They proposed lithium batteries on RS.1...but it was a disaster for warranty claims so they stopped and not a cheap option either.

To compensate the light nose you uplift the rear a bit and your weight balance is better. kiss

As said by others, the weight location is key and the battery is high enough to be noticeable especially on the front of a 991. You can really feel an empty tank during a track day. Cheap update for weight saving.

Next one is exhaust...brakes...wheels...and if you still have few pennies left you can go with carbon sway bars from the WP and the cherry on the cake are the gorilla glasses and suspensions. Job done total =-100kg

last of the last would be roof and frunk in carbon indecision

It is much easier to feel a small weight difference in a car that is already lightened.  I have a 73 911 that weighs 857kg and I have an old style racing battery that weighs 11kg.  The battery is located in the very front of the frunk (in front of fuel cell in this photo, but out of view) and thinking about a Lithium battery instead that would weigh a small fraction of this.  I think I will feel the difference.

    73rs fuel cell.jpg

In my GT3, I can slightly feel the difference with a passenger.  In my 911, I can feel the difference with a passenger very easily...
