    997 GT2 stuff

    Gents

Some of you may have read of my 997GT2 journey on Rennlist, the car runs a fully built 3.9 litre Mezger wearing K24 turbos and producing 840PS/930NM.

I enjoyed playing with the car at the vmax events in the UK where the car would regularly be the fastest street legal car there reaching 209mph in about 1.6 miles.

I decided to stop doing these events as after 100 odd sorties over 200mph I thought I'd better quit whilst I was ahead Smiley

I have used and enjoyed the car on the road and expected to move on to the new 991GT2RS but as I have posted before was not invited to buy one.

I've been really enjoying driving my 720S it really is a great daily driver certainly an easy car to get into and drive anywhere. I drove my GT2 recently and have to say I still really enjoy the manual box it just makes driving so much more involved and fun. The motor in this car is an amazing thing but I have known for some time that it is simply too powerful (actually torqueful) for the road and it cannot deploy the torque in gears 1, 2 and 3 and chirps the tyres in 4 !

I had my tuner (remotely) do me another program to reduce the torque but it wasn't really very successful as the engine set up was configured for the original power/torque.

I had been interested in the new VTG turbos which Porsche had developed for the 991 GT2RS which featured a completely redesigned and bigger hot side, this was always the limiting factor of the original 997 VTGs, the restsrictive hotside limited power output as it produced too much back pressure and heat.

My tuner finally got hold of a set and is planning to stick 'em on a Mezger 4.0litre engine they have.

I am quite interested in this, I would have my engine re-configured to around 800NM/750PS with that incredible VTG response which no conventional turbo could ever match.

I have put some pics below of what they look like and will update this thread when there is something to show you - don't hold your breath it may end up being way too expensive, the problem with kids getting older is one's frame of reference changes, a re configured motor for the price of two years at university Smiley   Smiley

The turbos are about 9K there is all the bespoke pipework, the "while they are in there" on a 215hp/litre motor which has done 30K miles, expect  new timing chains and who knows what..... then there's the bespoke programming on the engine dyno. I was thinking £30K (and that includes the max student loan), she is hopefully going to Uni in london Smiley

Well, you can't take it with you & I'm sure it would be phenomenal - but by golly that's some serious cash to blow (pardon the pun!)

Proper engineering on Porsche motors costs a lot, checkout what Ruf would charge you for a measily 737PS

I always like to hear what people are doing with their "older" cars; this forum tends to be heavy on the new, new, new etc. to the point of discouraging posting on not-so-new cars, so this is great stuff.

@TB993, It sounds like you are enjoying the 720S more than you had anticipated; owning it is likely to change the way you think about the GT2, and just maybe, you might enjoy that car increasingly for its driving purity, steering, gear change, etc. and not for the (improved) power that was the main focus ten years ago.  If this is the case, a re-tune to focus on response over power may make sense.  I always think of our cars as a portfolio, in the sense that when I buy a new one, it has an effect on the others, sometimes good, sometimes not.

Toby, I always enjoy your contributions, and interesting news once more!

I don’t understand though; I got the impression you didn’t want to hunt for more power anymore and then you mention you want to do some new tuning... will the new setup provide for less torque but better driveability?

Smiley It's not really the power it's the torque, the GT2 loses grip at around the 850NM level (in gear 1 to 3/4) and whilst I enjoyed the monster power and torque for it's prowess over 250kph it was pretty impossible to use on the street so I'm thinking keeping it down to 800NM and with VTGs will make for a much more useable car, and also 800NM at 7000rpm is about 780hp .... although it is unlikley that these turbos will be able to flow 780hp.
