    Facelifted BMW 7 series

It seems BMW are going all out with their new comic book grille. It must be so that Chinese Taikonauts can see their parents new car from space and instantly recognise it as a BMW Smiley I don't know what they are smoking in BMW's design centres these days but it must be seriously strong stuff Smiley

    That is horrendous Iain..heart

In stark contrast to the '8 Series' I once owned - which was frankly the best BMW grille to date... IMHO

BMW is loosing touch with reality, it is either that or we are heart

A neighboor of mine has a collection of 90's sportscars (german, jaoanese, english, pretty much has all of them) which he drives regularly in rotation, and saw his first gen 8 series and was precisely admiring how good that front looked for its age, sporty and elegant, why couldn't they go back to that?, and now this... it is exactly the opposite direction they are going

In 30 years time , when they will have reverted to the small grill , the 50 year old of that time will say : why can't BMW go back to the nice big front grills they used to do .

BTW , Mk2 looks better then the current one indecision

Hilarious but so true. Feeling somewhat relieved that I am not the only one with that opinion. Seriously keep wondering what is going on at some manufacturers’, I do know that a lot of talented designers have moved to Asian, especially Korean and Chinese companies but this is just nuts... one doesn’t need an artistically education to see that something is off, just open the eyes and take a look.

Does anybody know how much influence Jozef Kaban had in that prodct? I guess none...

To be fair, the new V8 makes 80 more HP, they cranked up the boost and needed more air flow...............

    523HP in the 750i, that's quite impressive.

Plus, the hood line is also higher for the pedestrian law.

In the majority of cars most of the airflow can or will enter through inlets in the front bumper.

    ...... or this (E23 version)

    E23 model.JPG

It is quite an eye opener to compare what was the flagship of the mid 70's to the newly launched G20 3 series.

                                                  E23 7 Series                          G20 3 Series

    Wheelbase                        2975 mm                                 2849 mm

    Length                                 4860 mm                                4717 mm

    Width                                   1800 mm                                1826 mm

    Height                                  1430 mm                                1443 mm

On size alone the G20 is therefore really the 2019 7 series and every model above it is a cunning new "niche" created by the marketing wizards in Munich Smiley

The V8 in the BMW is a "hot v" configuration, with the turbos and intake manifolds in the top, centre of the engine. Maybe that has something to do with the placement of the inlets?Smiley

You’d have a point but it looks as if the upper chamfered portion is purely decorative and doesn’t provide any airflow at all. Also, if you take a look at the S63 Coupe for comparison the grille is smaller and especially lowered spot re having even more power out of a “hot V” configuration.

That’s all fair but it’s not only the grille itself... the entire front bumper looks somewhat hideous and incoherent, something that doesn’t translate the value and status of the car at all. The width and design of the headlight are an interesting feature but, at least to me, that’s about it.

Apart from the 5 series that is no breakthrough but decent enough in itself all of the current BMW products feature some overly hideous and complex surface treatments and graphical elements. For people who experienced the models of the brand a few decades ago this is hard to digest, maybe easier for younger people that have not seen many clean designs on contemporary cars...

    Re: Facelifted BMW 7 series

This is an interview Kaban held a few years ago, I am still waiting for his first concepts tomsurface as BMWs current designs would not go along with his past statements at all...

Kaban says he was able to draw on his experience with the Veyron to define Skoda’s new design language, which he calls “the elegant, to the point and practical”.

“There is a similarity in the simplicity… both are reduced to a minimum,” he says. It is an ethic that aligns with his former charge, Audi (which he describes as “proud and motivated – a perfect brand to work for”).

But Kaban think that there is room to maneuver within that philosophy: “I like Audi designs, but we are concentrating on our route, which will produce a different kind of simplicity.”

Kaban cites Apple’s clean, minimalist products as great examples of design and technology that work together perfectly, without being bound by an excess of detail. “Complicated, it is easier to do,” he says.

This position very much in agreement with F. A. Porsche’s credo that “a formally coherent product needs no embellishment,” and that “good design must be honest”. (Incidentally, in 2008, Porsche studio designed the elegant ‘109 And’ electric locomotive for Skoda Transport (away from the Skoda Auto since 1991).)

    Re: Facelifted BMW 7 series

What is astonishing is that the Audi grille on the new A8 looks smaller in person because it is situated fairly low on the front of the car.  The 7-series grille sits on top so it will be much more visible.

    Re: Facelifted BMW 7 series

BMW needs to change its name to DTU for Damn That's Ugly..

Now if it had the new Aston Anime dashboard it would be revolting both inside and out.

    Re: Facelifted BMW 7 series

    I am against the grain.

The more I look at the new 7, the more I like it.

It has presence now, it looks mean. It screams I am here.

The current S looked so dated and soft compared to this new 7

    Re: Facelifted BMW 7 series

Agree that the current S-class dated when compared with the new 7-series and the A8.  The A8 has a lithe elegance that doesn’t show well in photographs.  The larger grille, while added for the Chinese market, probably hides an array of cameras and sensors.

The RR Ghost is much nicer looking...timeless and not too offensive. Why couldn't BMW do the same with the 7 series? Smiley Target audience? I mean the 7 series lost mostly to...Tesla...so how is this the design the target audience wants? Smiley Smiley
