Interesting new&expensive extras: carbon roof, painted calipers

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

I really like the looks of it, but there are some real weak spots:

    1. The shut line between the front bumper and the frunk
    2. The third brake light
    3. The fact that the black plastic in the rear bumper is "higher", that is, more pronounced than the rear light cluster/strip...

Only time will tell how obvious those weak spots will be upon viewing the car in real life. In my experience, those issues which look really pronounced in pictures can become unimportant details when seen in real life.

I like that the Hazard light switch is up on the dash again - where it should be.

I liked the old cup holders - the new one is not good for me. All my coffee will end up on the center console. In 997 and 991 only part of my coffee hit the console. :)

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

I suppose that the two buttons to the left of the Hazard light switch is user programable.

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

I think it changes, according to the car options. Buttons are different on the 2 photos.1543396427796Clip_5_.jpgClip_4_.jpg

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

It's good to see they have listened to some previous criticisms on small details such as giving the option to specify black callipers on an S model where the standard red clashed badly with a number of exterior colours, offering contrast stitching with most of the leather options and reducing the amount of stitching that is in the contrast colour to take account of the fact the 911 has a relatively small cabin. I doubt 991.2 GT3 RS owners will be pleased to see Lizard Green as an optional colour on the new Carrera models but the precedent was already set for that with Lava Orange in the 991.2 range. Nice to see that somebody in Porsche also listened and gave us the option of a dark green again with Aventurine Green making a return from the 993.

Less impressive is that a rear parking camera and active cruise are still relatively expensive options when they really should be standard on a car at this price point and a no cost delete option for those looking to spec the lightest car possible.

The price of a fairly modestly optioned S appears to have jumped quite a bit.

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

    • The interior looks more modern which is a good thing as this is a new gen but the problem is that is also looks less sporty. More in line with a small Panamera sedan than a 911, but to be fair it is very hard to judge from pictures so will postpone judgement until I sit in one, also the color and trim options on the pictures does not help it at all, other option combos may give a sportier impression.

    • PDK lever was ugly but useful for very tight corner where you had to shift your hands on the wheel and it was much more efficient and quick to tap the pdk lever to switch gear as you were coming out than to try to find where the paddles were since Porsche attaches them to the wheel not the steering column.  All they had to do is change the design, not put that silly looking lever and so far forward (hope the manual gear lever is not going there). It doesn't even have a design recognizable as a transmission lever, which is a design flaw right there, hence all the jokes about the Brawn shaver.
    • Getting rid of the sport exhaust button and others is another step back, another step into a sedan direction. I use it a lot, and don't want to go into a touch screen while driving to access it. Form follows function, not the other way around.

    • The driver's cupholder is another step into sedan territory and away from sportscar concept, looks hideous in a 911, looks like it is from a SUV, the previous solution were it could be hidden was both functional and aesthetic. Cupholder delete option... check.

    • I like the exterior in general. The more accentuated coke bottle shape is great, especially the wider front arches, I love that.

    • Don't mind the rear light bar, even with the big beveled Porsche script, but that third brake light looks unfinished. It is a nice design but looks like a pice of camo stuck on top, it should have been more intergrated to look more like the other vertical strips on the engine cover. As is right now, it is so bight and reflective in the middle of all that black that with the right lighting it sticks out like a clown's red nose (add that to the... to be fixed in the 992.2)

    • Really like the exhaust tip integration, very sporty, but still don't like the cheap black plastic of the bottom half bumper.

    • The front bumper looks a bit boring but then again its a Carrera, the GTS with the sportsdesign bumper and more so the GT3 will look more interesting.

    • Getting used to the square bonnet design, don't mind it as much as I thought. If they put an air vent between the hood and the front bumper in the GT models it will look better I think. But it is not as bad as I thought because the front bumper is also more square in the front, matching the bonnet's line and they line up well.

    • The one thing that by far is a huge eye sore and just cannot get over no matter what is the rear spoiler when it is deployed.  From some angles it looks like the car suffered a crash and a piece of the back is out of place about to fall of, from other angles it looks like it is a car with its trunk lid accidentally open, from the rear because the spoiler is so wide now you can see all that real-state under the spoiler that is unfinished, and looks like that, unfinished, and because it is so wide, the lateral edges have to follow the curverd contour of the sides of the car and so the spoiler is very curved at the edges with also looks very bad because it doesn't have the shape of a spoiler, it has the sahpe of a body panel that is lifted out.

    • That rear spoiler is not a problem for the GT and Turbo models but a duck spoiler or the like is an absolute must in the Carrera, I would have to go back 20 years to the headlights of the 996.1 to find a similar design fail ion the 911.

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

I like it a lot, it's a huge improvement compared to the 991. Also Porsche nailed it with these little reminiscences from older models such as the pronounced hips that you can identify from the above view.

There are details that I don't like though, like the rear brake light or the rear spoiler deployed, both look weird. Hopefully they will fix this "issues" with the .2.

In general we are talking about a very good looking car, good proportions in its lines and a lovely and modern interior. Can't wait to see more special versions, a GT3 Touring would be the best modern P to date.

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

    G. Kacher obviously was right when he said in his preview article that this time the engineers did take a back seat while the designers took the lead in the 992 development process. At least I can not spot any tech news regarding driving dynamics / performance. Must be the first time in Porsche history that an outgoing Carrera Version (991.2 GTS) is faster than the new model (992 S) although engine and hp is equal (3.0L 450 hp for both) and although 991.2 GTS does not feature any "go faster tech" in the suspension department compared to the 992. Actually one would expect an advantage for the 992 here due to the wider track / fatter rubber, but maybe this advantage is eaten by the +55 kg additional weight. Of course final assessment has to wait until real world performance tests have been conducted but I assumed that Henry Cachpole's mentioning of an 5 sec advantage on the Nordschleife (992 S compared to the 991.2 S) is legit (I guess it's the factory claim). Not that it really matters as all modern Carreras are fast enough anyway for what they are made for (having fun on public roads) but it may be a sign that development ressources these days primarily are spend elsewhere and not aimed anymore in winning the IMHO ridiculous HP war or gaining further significant lap time progress on the Nordschleife.

I don’t understand the comment that the new 992 S is slower than the old 991.2 GTS. Can someone help me? Porsche says that the new 992 is five seconds faster around the Nurburgring than the old version.  Was the 991 GTS that much faster than the 991 S?

The exterior is really more of a 991 facelift than a new model. It is OK but nothing to get excited about.

I like the new interior though.

A Carrera S with all essential dynamic extras (which should have been standard equipment)  adds up to €135.000 before ceramic brakes and interior upgrades.

Too expensive when you consider that the BMW M850i costs €125.000 all inclusive.

According to my P source 992 Carrera S is 5s faster then 991.2 Carrera GTS on the same rubber(Corsas).

992 CS was equipped with SPASM, PDDC, RWS, PCCB and SC.

    Re: 992 Thread Closed

The UK configurator is now live with the new 992. I configured the same car on the German and UK sites. On the German site it comes to 142,110.25 euros. On the UK site the same spec is £107,842.00 which equates to 121,688.73 euros. German customers may want to try and order a LHD car from a UK dealer with that level of price difference. The UK standard spec is higher with full leather included as standard.
