    New or Second Hand?

    Dear all,
I may sell my car in a few months.
It's a shame but I don't use it much anymore since I live in the UK now, not sure yet, though...
    Here's my question:
I bought my car new, costed a lot bc of the options.
When I looked at how much I could sell it for, I was gutted
It has lost so much value in less than a year.
And people take in account the price of the car optionless, doesn't matter if you spent a fortune on options (which I did).
My car has lost probably around 25%.
My next car could well be a low milage second hand.
    What do you guys think?
I know, I know, it is great to have a completely new car, I've been there myself; Boxster S and C4C but you lose SO MUCH at the resell, is it worth considering second hand?
Thanks for your views on the matter.
    Take care,
    Fanch.

    Re: New or Second Hand?

The only mistake would be insisting on low mileage. Truth is today that people overestimate the importance of this. Cars last much longer than before.

I would certainly go for used provided you could get what you wanted in the used market.

I bought new because I had to to get what I wanted and for various other reasons. But I frankly hate having to deal with all of the warranty b.s. and all of the limitations that means. I would rather have a free hand to do as I wished.

    Re: New or Second Hand?

    Hello Gang,
I'm a new member here and I'm looking to pick up a '99 996 C2 coupe. This may get long, but can anyone tell me of any horror stories with their car? I've read all I can and haven't heard of anything too dramatic. Few engine replacements here and there done under warranty. Thanks in advance.

    tough question...

considering that you have a relatively new car that you are thinking of selling.

    1) Do you want another Porsche?

    2) What is the purpose of the car (basic transportation, fun, etc?)

    3) Do you want to free up some cash, or is this less important to you than having a fine car?

If you want another Porsche, then I would say keep the one you have, as you will sell at wholesale and pay retail to get another. You have a nearly new car with a full warranty. That is worth something.

If you don't care to have another Porsche, or another fine car, then you likely would be best off selling your car and purchasing cheap transportation. A new Civic or a Nissan pickup will get you where you need to go, of course in less elegance and without the fun. A used version will still get you there, but without the warranty and with even less elegance.

There is a time for all things. This may not be the time for a Porsche for you, however, you can always get another one when the time is proper.

Whatever you decide, focus on what is most important in your life. These cars are really quite meaningless in the overall scheme of things.

    Re: New or Second Hand?

    Personally, I wouldn't touch a 996 before MY 2000.

    Thanks

    Hi Spider,
    Thanks for your advices.
You are right, you buy a Porsche for fun and not much else,
    different kids have different toys
But, back to me, I am seriously thinking about selling the car for the same reasons as Christian, I hardly use it now that I am in the UK and the car in France.
But you're right, warranty's still active, the car not even a year old, and most of all, I love it
But I can't help thinking, that the car seats in a garage while I pay huge insurance and I could invest the money instead.
Don't know if I would get another car to be honest but if I did, it would be different, maybe a Porsche (GT3, Turbo, C4S X45 30mm) maybe a Ferrari 360, honestly, don't know, so many beauties out there
I have a potential buyer right now, so I'll have to make a decision quite quickly.
Truth is, it's nice to have a beautiful C4C in the garage that waits for you when you come back to Paris on Week ends, arrggghhh, see? I can't make up my mind
Christian? Have you made a decision for your turbo?
    Are you gonna sell it?
Cheers for reading the boring details of my life, I realize this is off topic from the Driving experience in general but all advice help.
    Fanch.

    Keeping my Turbo

I decided to keep my Turbo after talking to my dealer, my Mercedes dealer and my wife.

As you know, I don't have much time to drive my Turbo.
So I actually wanted to free a place in the garage and save some money too (insurance, etc.).
Trying to get a Cayenne Turbo and giving my 996 Turbo to my dealer somehow failed. My dealer wanted me to sign a contract for a Cayenne Turbo but he didn't want to take my 996 Turbo in but make me sell it. I actually got the impression that my car isn't worth more than around 100000 EUR. Absolutely unacceptable.
So I decided to go for the second solution, getting rid of my wife's SLK 230 and getting rid of my 996 Turbo and buying a car together, a SL55 AMG. My Mercedes dealer proved to be very "generous" (compared to my Porsche dealer), he wanted to take my Turbo in for around 110000 EUR if I order a new SL55 AMG.

Finally, me and my wife decided that I keep my 996 Turbo because of the following reasons:
    • my 996 Turbo costed me way more than 110000 EUR (who knows my car personally knows what I'm talking about)
    • my wife doesn't like the SL55 AMG that much and I don't either
    • the 996 Turbo is so much fun and I'll regret selling it sooner or later

So we found the perfect solution for us:
We keep the ML55 as a family car and we hope that Mercedes comes up with the rumored 460-480 HP new ML55 around 2004.
I keep my 996 Turbo and enjoy it as often as I can, trying to drive it more often in spring and summer next year.
My wife gets a SLK 32 AMG which will also be my daily driver when she needs the ML 55 because of my little one.

So my advice would be: if you really really think that you don't like your 996 C4 Cab anymore, sell it and get something else instead. But get something "immortal" like a Ferrari, Lamborghini or even a Porsche GT3, Turbo, etc.

Francois, I was the same when I was young and buying a new car always made me very very happy. But once or twice I actually sold a car which I'd have loved to keep. I sold it only for something "new" which I later regretted.

Any my last advice to people out there who think about resale value: forget about it. If you're lucky, there is high demand and people have a lot of money in their pockets.
If you're not lucky, there is lack of interest and of money. Don't ever think about resale value if you buy such an expensive car...I'm happy I didn't because I'd be very very disappointed right now.

    Re: Keeping my Turbo

    Yes,
You are right Christian, if one is really concerned about resale value then buy second hand.
Buying new is more of a passionate move, you just KNOW your car will depreciate
If I can get a cheaper insurance, I may keep the C4C, it is a great car, and I'm thankful for it.
it is also only 9 months old now so I assume its resale value won't fluctuate too much within the next half year or so.
Otherwise you might well see me arriving for the first Rennteam meeting on a Bicycle
    A porsche one though please
    Fanch.

    Re: Keeping my Turbo

RC, an excelent response. I have agonized through a similar situation and your comments did bring back memories of cars that were traded for the latest and then regreted.

    Re: Keeping my Turbo

Another response, maybe from another world for you.

Since generations, we have always kept our best cars for our kids; you invest for the future and you can come back to your nostalgy from time to time, teach your kid how to drive the 911turbo you used to drive 10 years ago, a lot safer that way, lots of pragmatic advices to give them.

To Fanch: better investing in... a larger garage if you can.

    Re: Keeping my Turbo

    Yep way to go man,
Give me a few more years and hopefully, I won't have to worry about which car I want but what color I want the next one to be in
    Welcome to the board Ohmar,
    Fanch.

    Re: Keeping my Turbo

Exactly, way to go to. Remembers me of my dad duplicating the car orders to avoid fights with my bro, each having a different car colour at the end (but still fighting)...
And now, almost every year, we're battling on which colour we should keep or donate, shameful

    Well, I'll tell you what...

Why don't you pick the ones you don't want and donate them to me!
    Fanch.
Whereabouts are you in the ME?
    I have friends in Dubai.

Re: Well, I'll tell you what...

    Fanch,
We have interests in Dubai but live near Riyad and Geneva.

On the donation side it is a complicated process left to lawyers through foundation schemes that directly benefit the most in need. Are you one of those ?

I can see you expect a new Merc. That's good, we have a 500 here with some changes, a friend received the 600 some time ago, nice behaviour. Unfortunately they mostly remain in the safe hands of our drivers so I am not too tempted in a S55 for ex.
