Re: Arctic Silver vs GT Silver - pics anyone?!

Liquid, this was my immediate reaction also - the F1 drivers didn't choose which gearbox they would drive next - and if they did, it would not be based on the fun they had in their car! We on the other hand have the luxury of choosing the gearbox for our next car.

For me personally, I am only thinking about the PDK for practical reasons. The car will be my daily drive of 70kms through some pockets of traffic, and some highway stretches. At present my 3 year old Boxster S has a manual gearbox, but the traffic is getting me down. Still, if the PDK doesn't 'push my buttons' (sorry for the bad pun!), I will go for the manual one and endure traffic!

Re: Arctic Silver vs GT Silver - pics anyone?!

The manual box will be a relic from the past soon.

IMO it only offers a psychological advantage that you think you are more involved in the driving experience, whereas in reality you miss out because you have the trouble of co-ordinating pedal and stick and waste time in the process instead of steering, braking, inventing lines etc.

In the past there were similar debates, like:

    fuel injection vs carburetors

    servoed brakes vs unassisted

    ABS vs non-ABS

    power assisted vs unassisted steering

The argument in favour of the old systems was always that they are more direct, involving, offer better feel and purity etc.

To be honest I was a fanatical manualist until about a year ago, but now autos of the various types are so good that I have "shifted" my allegiance for good

I am driving a PDK 911s this weekend so I will be in a better position to opine on its perceived massive advantage. On the other hand, as stated previously, it is not my objective to prove the superiority of one gearbox over another, why can't we agree that both are good!

Now where is my vinyl collection

My point is is that if you reject PDK on the basis of prejudice or lack of familiarity during a short test drive, it would be a pity IMO to miss out on this new technology. The possibilities offered by the Sport Chrono Package (3 modes each with auto or manual selection) are fantastic.

The PDK needs some getting used to in order to be appreciated, so make sure you go on a longer drive and if in doubt ask to repeat your test drive.

If someone decides on a manual very consciously for his own reasons, then fair enough. Anyway the manual I've tried was very good much better actually than 997.1 both in shift quality and smoother clutch action.

Vinyl collection! Remember the importance of the stylus? Just like the manual gear lever and clutch pedal now!

Will have the car for a few hours but any test drive cannot simulate an everyday driving experience. I owned an M3 csl btw, and drove a Golf Gti dsg for 6 months, so I do have some experience with flappy paddle boxes.

hopefully your beloved PDK does not go the way of the Minidisc

Actually, the MiniDisc was more of a commercial and marketing failure, as far as I remember. The technology was good.

The marketing of non-manual boxes has been excellent in the past few years. Whereas in the past they were considered old people's choice, now all the top cars come with them (and the double clutch system in particular), from the GT-R to Ferrari, the M3s, the AMGs the Veyron etc etc.
