    Re: 2018 Mercedes G-Class

    SciFrog:

I don’t get the G. My RRS is a better car in every aspect for 40% less money...

The new one is really nice, had the chance to drive it today (pre-production car), loved it. Deliveries seem to start next month, I was seriously thinking about switching from my E63 to the G63 but my wife still hates the G63...even the new one. Smiley

Drive feel was quite impressive, you barely feel the weight, more like a sporty SUV than G class. The interior is a new class of it's own and I get the feeling that there is much more interior room, even if the car looks basically the same (size-wise). Looks quite good in reality, car was (I think) an Edition 1 with that stupid stripe on the side and red rim margins. Sound is (still) great, outside and inside, good job AMG. Deep V8 sound.

Funny: My dealer didn't cancel my GLC63 S order, he just modified it (no ceramics, no matte color, no Edition 1) and got it as a test-car for interested customers, so "my" car was sitting at the dealership, which felt a bit weird to me. Smiley

    Re: 2018 Mercedes G-Class

Good to know the driving dynamics are vastly improved.

    Re: 2018 Mercedes G-Class

If you recommend an EV G class then you probably haven’t driven one. The wind noise is already unbearable, imagine without the engine noise how bad it will be.

The new G got some excellent reviews especially from the dynamic driving and comfort point of view. At least the  good news for those interested in the classic one, pre-2019, prices will be very interesting as a second or third car.

Definitely not your typical G class anymore, good or bad. I liked it. I also like how it looks now, a bit more "manly" Smiley with "chest hair" Smiley and the interior is a huge improvement, even if I miss that old interior a little bit. The sound is still very good, which is seldom in such cars nowadays. Overall, a nice improvement over the old one.

    Re: 2018 Mercedes G-Class

Thanks RC for the review. I am quite keen on this car as our family run-about.  new Cayenne is also on my list but this seems much more quirkly/cool.

but have always stayed away from the old model due to it being like a truck.

how well does the new one "feel" to drive compared to say a ML (or GLE) or cayenne?  and like most people, I am not doing to take a 250k car off-road.  so everyday use is what we care about.

my dealer won't get the first car till later this yr, so if I put an order in for 2019, I don't get to see/drive it.

so please tell us more!  wink

Sorry this wasn't a real "review". All those stupid YouTubers can do their stuff because they are in the public's eye but me, I have to take in account "wishes" not to talk, not to post, not to take pictures...as if these cars are secret or whatever. Everyone saw this frigging thing already. Smiley

but have always stayed away from the old model due to it being like a truck.

I like the "old" one a lot but I have to admit that after seeing/driving the new one, I badly wanted one. My wife was lucky I didn't try the new G63 before because I am pretty sure I would have changed our (family car) order.

I can only compare it to the GLS (haven't driven the ML/GLE for a very long time) and they feel almost the same, I'd even say the G63 feels lighter/more nimble than the GLS63 but I may remember it wrong (I don't think so though).

my dealer won't get the first car till later this yr, so if I put an order in for 2019, I don't get to see/drive it.

There is no comparison to the "old" G63, the new G63 really feels lighter and more nimble (I wouldn't use the word "sporty" though but yes, typical SUV feeling, not that "off-roady" as the old G63).

It is difficult to explain, especially since I didn't have much driving time in it.

Dealer told me that first cars are available next month or so, maybe I can get a new G63 for a proper review...

I have been told my new G63 (not a "first edition") has been "held up" our dealer seems to have very little info they are claiming it has been built but not being released from the factory for some reason and they can give no delivery date (was expected 1st Sept)

Can anyone throw any light on this yes

DAMN - that's a beautiful car. Enjoy it and drive safely. Looking forward to some driving report!

Still, have it on our shopping list. Put an alert at my dealer that as soon some more assistants are available we will order. Congrats...looks amazing...still my favorite "SUV" on the planet (well...next to the Urus). Smiley

Mercedes seems to currently have some certification issues with the new particulate filter models, my C63 S Cabriolet order has been accepted just a few days ago, car will be delivered end of the year (on winter tires Smiley) but I have no estimated build date yet, unfortunately. Seems to be a real issue with certification right now...

    Re: 2018 Mercedes G-Class

Thanks for the comments guys, a few interior pics below.

I had not driven the previous G Wagon so cannot compare this one. This drives how I expected like a ladder frame with a big body dropped on it, it feels like a tank.... all in a good way, it really appeals to my schoolboy passion for mechanical stuff this really feels like a huge precision engineered go anywhere beast I absolutely love it.

The look, although subtly different, is ultra modern in the flesh, it really looks like a bang up to date vehicle and parked alongside a GL at the filling station made the GL look very dated !

Keeping the revs under 3K as advised by RC for this motor, I'm loving the torque and hp gauges. We had a load of fun last night playing with the ambient lighting with the music playing flat out the kids loved it !

Fuel consumption seems predictably awful, 2.7 tonnes, aero of a brick, huge tyres, lots of 4WD components and a big twin turbo V8 Smiley

BTW the leather does not look like it does in that last pic it is actually a nice cognac, subtle and classy

Yep, after that...you can basically floor it. Smiley Engine will provide more power after 5000 km and may have a power increase at around 10000 km as well (according to owners).

Thanks a lot for the details. The car has lane keeping assist and Dynamic Cruise control. But it doesn't have the autonomous driving. If you don't go the longer distance you most likely won't miss it. I just got so much used to it, I will never buy a car without it anymore.

Other than that - thanks for the interior shots, it really looks beautiful. And the outside is indeed so much updated to the previous model. Love it! Enjoy that beauty!

    Re: 2018 Mercedes G-Class

My audi q7 and my S3 both have the feature called Audi Pre Sense..... it warns you about an upcoming obstacle and if you don't do anything about it, it will brake and steer away automatically.... it scared the shit out of me the first time it happened, but very worth it to have in my opinion

You could test the feature safely again and confirm your suspicions.

    Re: 2018 Mercedes G-Class

My E63 S has brake assist and I turned it off for me because it annoyed me as hell. I have a very dynamic driving style and I brake late, which the system doesn't like at all, especially before curves or when you approach other cars.

For my wife (she has a different profile saved to "her" key), the brake assist is active. Pretty amazing thing: She once exited our garage in reverse and the car made a full emergency stop because it "sensed" another car approaching on the road my wife reversed into. That driver was driving too fast (according to our neighbor), so my wife didn't see him when she backed the car out of our garage. Pretty great feature.
