i know there is a gtr hatred issue on the board, but i would go for the GTR without the blink of an eye. i can't understand how you can compare it with the old m3 csl. your main concern is the ring, and the nissan has a sick ring time, in the same league than a gt2, plus you have all the technology and luxury of modern cars ( satnav, bose sound system etc..) , a much faster gear box .

That is the first vote for the GTR. Any more?

I also vote for the GTR Why? You could then verify whether the GTR marketing claim (7.29) is correct or not. Also, the M3 lacks engine power. I don't think a regular CSL will get close to 7.50. This Supertest result was always a bit strange. Probably some very special tires/special track conditions (racing event immediately before the Supertest etc.)...

In summary, I think it is safe to assume that the GTR is several seconds (5-10) faster on the NBR than the CSL

The list of amateur drivers who can hammer a four-seater around the 'Ring in 7:50 or less is also very short

Kidding aside: I wouldn't like to play the Guinea pig testing the GT-R as a "track-car". I'm sure it will do the job for some occasional laps, but: how many laps do you do p.a. Think about the weight of the car - even if the technology would make it appear lighter from the driver's perspective, the stress for the chassis/mechanical parts will be rather high.

On the other hand the CSL is an approved first class Ringtool (and a fast one) and there are lot of experiences from long-term Ringers available regarding reliability etc.

BTW as we are talking four-seaters: I don't know what kind of mods the owner of the black AMG CLK (Ring "regular") has done to the car and how reliable it is, but it is damned fast Though his other car is a 997 GT2

    Re: GTR vs CSL

Since you've been drooling over the CSL for many years now, I'm not sure why you're asking the question? It's time you get it out of your system.

You will, however be without any warranty!!!

Unless you buy an Approved CSL from a BMW dealer with extendable warranty...

The age of the CSL and its (lack of) warranty are my main concerns. There are a few in Germany with BMW warranties intact, but not many.

    Re: GTR vs CSL

aum... find a way to test drive the gtr before making the decision . you will fall in love with the gtr when you will drive it

    Re: GTR vs CSL

You could try and create a next gen CSL with the new M3, would be a fun project and an awesome track car.

I have considered this. The e92 M3 is a good car but it would take some mods to make it into a great track car. Then the warranty has gone and resale value decreased. I prefer to buy cars to fit their intended purpose without modding.

I had to mod my 996TT X50 to get it to be a good track car, but I do not want to do this again as I do want a warranty.

Both the CSL and GTR are ready to track straight out of the box and need only upgraded brake pads/fluid and minor suspension tweaks.

From what I heard the CSL project has been discontinued due to budget considerations at BMW

    Re: GTR vs CSL

oups ... that would be sad ... i picked it up in a german car magazin a few days ago:

    Re: GTR vs CSL

^1.5-2 years before they come out with a new M3, and I think thats a long time away.

    Re: GTR vs CSL

Very interesting to see that the 5-year-old CSL is more popular (in this thread) than the GTR as a track and back road car.

Would this change if winter driving in Europe was a consideration?

    Re: GTR vs CSL

Aum, there is an allergy on the board for the GTR, mainly because it was labeled as a "porsche killer", porsche lovers felt threatened and took a defensive behavior towards the nissan.
even if the subject was : "GTR vs Clio diesel" the clio would have been more popular..

Well, not a diesel, but the Clio Cup almost beat the 997 C2S mkII in the recent Britain's best driver car, Autocar big test.
