    What would you do?

    I have 4 months left on my 987S lease. It has 38,000 miles on it. The indicator light now says I have to take it in for service since it is approaching the 40,000 mile service mark. The dealer tells me that it is a recommended service to replace the brake fluid. It's close to $300. The brakes work fine.

    My question is, since I am returning the car and getting a new lease on a 997S PDK, should I just ignore it? This question is also a matter of principle for me since I hate sinking money into a leased car. I'll know better to get a 36 months rather than a 48 like I did on my BoxsterS. If any of you think it is a safety issue (as my dealer impressed upon me), then please say so. If I decide not to get it taken care of, can I have the dealer reset the light even though I deny the service be performed?

    I doubt the dealer will reset the light, but what does it matter, the cars going anyway and whoever buys it will/should have it serviced, so let the lease company deal with it.(imho)

    You may have an issue with the end of lease inspection if the light is still on. Also, Porsche recommends chaanging Brake Fluid every two years. I would speak with the dealer where you are purchaing your 997S.

    Even if the brakes works well, your fluid's boiling point has sowered with the time since water get into it.
    If you have to hard brake (on a mountain ride for exemple), brake fluid will boil much earlier and your pedal will go down to the floor.
    It's very disturbing when you are about to reach an airpin...
    This is why it is recommended to change the brake fluid every two year and before a race track session if your fluid is more than 6 months old as track brakings are much much harder than road ones, even in the mountains.

    Resetting the service light without actually carrying out the service work raises a moral issue (which might not bother some ) as well as a liability issue. Say, if a driver were subsequently to have a major accident due to brake failure.

    Without in any way wanting to question the morals of auto dealers , I would be surprized if a dealer would agree to resetting the light without changing the fluid at this mileage, purely due to the liability risk.

    Hmm. For the reason already stated, I wouldn't reset the indicator light unless the requested maintenance has been performed. However, 38K miles is not yet 40K. What are the terms of your lease? If you return the car with less than 40K, then are you responsible for a service that's not recommended until 40K is reached?

    You could trade it in before you get to the 40k mark? Or drive it less until you do trade in...?

    I had exactly the same issue. I spoke to the lease company and got them to agree to let me have it serviced at a specialist rather than a main dealer (in writing of course).

    Instead of Pounds680 I git it done for Pounds244 inc brake fluid change.

    In the UK they will just chuck my car into auction to see what they can get for it.

    I might make them a silly offer an keep it.!!

    As long as the work is done & documented, why would you assume it needs to be done at the dealer? If you like throwing money away, sure, do your maintenance work at the dealer.

    Here in the USA, there's something called the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act. A manufacturer cannot deny warranty coverage just because you used a different air filter than the Porsche filter, or did an oil change yourself.

    No harm waiting a few months and seeing if it raises a flag at the end-of-lease inspection.

    It is not imperative that you get the brake flush done immediately, but it should be done every 2~ years.

    If I did the math right, you've had the Boxster S for 44 months.

    If that's right, you should change the brake fluid for safety reasons. Of course, the odds of something bad happening as a result of not changing the fluid are probably low, but do you really want to gamble with your brakes over a measly $300?

    Thanks everyone for your comments. I am leaning to have it done, if nothing else, because it's potentially a safety issue (since I do drive my car hard), and that it's $300. My dad used to say "dont step over dollars to pick up dimes".

    Your dad knows what he's talking about - $300 is peanuts in comparison to a potential safety issue. Get it done - money well spent. Just don't go out for "one big" night and I am sure that $300 will see itself back in your pocket!
