I think they look great at the 997, something new, something special, a wheel that fits the car perfectly.
IMO the Carrera Classic wheel is boring, Sport Design is fine, but perhaps a bit too filigree for the 911 and the turbo-wheel just awful. I don't like the turbo rims at all, at least at a car that is not a turbo. The new 997-S-wheel is nice, but quite common, so I'd take the original S-wheel again any time.

Perhaps you'd better understand if you'd stop to call them "lobster forks" 
IMHO excellent and unique design with a strong technical touch (suits the Porsche marque very well IMO). I'd take them anyday over the Turbo wheels or the FL wheels

On a Carrera my preference would be:
1. Sport Design wheels
2. Turbo wheels
3. Carrera S wheels
4. Facelift wheels
5. Carrera Classic wheels
I wouldn't have any of them on a Turbo though, not even the GT3 wheels - sorry. Perhaps the new Spyder wheels if staying away from after-market.

@MMD: if you search back, you may find some posts by 69bossnine on what he sees as the attractions of the design of the Carrera S wheels. IMO they were thought-provoking and right on the money - as to why one could choose them.
My own order of preference (among 997 wheels):
1) Sport Design (which I have
and which I adore most)
2) Carrera Sport (another inspired design)
3) GT3RS/GT3 (gorgeous but only on a GT3/GT3RS or atomic80's TT
)
then trailing a little further behind...
4) Carrera Classic
5) Carrera S
then significantly less attractive IMO are the remaining wheels....
6) Turbo
7) Carrera III
8) Facelift wheels
But, one can save oneself an awful lot of needless agonising since the real winner is so easy to select: HRE P40s 19 inches... those are simply unbelievably beautiful and I think they are the best wheels bar none

They look okay, IMO. I didn't order them back then because I couldn't "get" them visually.

i loved the lobster fork wheels, and thought they suited the 997 perfectly. just goes to show, different strokes (or spokes) for different folks. i despise the turbo wheel as well, and would not buy the turbo just because of the wheel (i've never seen a turbo with any other Porsche OEM wheel).

The Carrera S wheel was designed specifically to compliment the 997's styling by conveying a modern and technical feel to a traditional and iconic shape.
I have liked this wheel since first seeing it at the 997 launch, and it reminds me of the original Gallardo wheel which I like even more. To me, the Carrera S wheel integrates with the car better than all the optional Porsche wheels. Now that this wheel is no longer offered, it will arguably be seen as one of the more attractive wheel choices on pre-owned 997s for years to come.

I still love my CLUTCH FORKS (look at a picture of an actual lobster fork, and an actual clutch fork, and you'll discover that the lobster fork name got started by a bunch of country-club Porsche enthusiasts who've never seen the inside of a bellhousing, but have eaten their fair share of lobster.. )
They simply fit my car, and look just as fresh today as always (to me).
The wheel I like least on a 997 is the turbo (now THAT wheel is the biggest departure of them all, from my perspective... Looks like something yanked off a Mercedes SUV..)
The new S wheel is "alright", but not nearly as distinctive or industrial-pure-business as the old.
There's no wrong or right answer, but if you use this thread as a "poll", I think your "where'd they come from?" question is moot.... Folks like 'em, THAT'S where they came from... Somebody in Porsche design drew them up, and somebody above them said "hot damn that looks great!".
When the Turbo wheels were drawn, that designer should've been given a one-way ticket to SEMA...
