Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

I still don't get what Porsche was trying to do with these Carrera S wheels (question marked). I mean WHY did anyone at Porsche think they'd compliment the 2005 997S?

Here's a look back (and forward to 997.2 wheel in lower left):

I said it back in 2005 and I'll say it again : it reminded me then and now of the orig C5 Corvette wheel of 1997 :

I think they look great at the 997, something new, something special, a wheel that fits the car perfectly.

IMO the Carrera Classic wheel is boring, Sport Design is fine, but perhaps a bit too filigree for the 911 and the turbo-wheel just awful. I don't like the turbo rims at all, at least at a car that is not a turbo. The new 997-S-wheel is nice, but quite common, so I'd take the original S-wheel again any time.

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

Perhaps you'd better understand if you'd stop to call them "lobster forks" IMHO excellent and unique design with a strong technical touch (suits the Porsche marque very well IMO). I'd take them anyday over the Turbo wheels or the FL wheels

    EDIT: Rossi was faster

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

On a Carrera my preference would be:

    1. Sport Design wheels
    2. Turbo wheels
    3. Carrera S wheels
    4. Facelift wheels
    5. Carrera Classic wheels

I wouldn't have any of them on a Turbo though, not even the GT3 wheels - sorry. Perhaps the new Spyder wheels if staying away from after-market.

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

I like the way they meet the outer edges, but those lobster forks just look way too busy at the center/hub. The holes in the arms there is just too much going on next to the bolt holes and the logo.

You forgot the best ones: carrera sport and GT3.

Quite agree and then the old style Carrera S were my third preference

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

@MMD: if you search back, you may find some posts by 69bossnine on what he sees as the attractions of the design of the Carrera S wheels. IMO they were thought-provoking and right on the money - as to why one could choose them.

My own order of preference (among 997 wheels):

    1) Sport Design (which I have and which I adore most)
    2) Carrera Sport (another inspired design)
    3) GT3RS/GT3 (gorgeous but only on a GT3/GT3RS or atomic80's TT )

then trailing a little further behind...

    4) Carrera Classic
    5) Carrera S

then significantly less attractive IMO are the remaining wheels....

    6) Turbo
    7) Carrera III
    8) Facelift wheels

But, one can save oneself an awful lot of needless agonising since the real winner is so easy to select: HRE P40s 19 inches... those are simply unbelievably beautiful and I think they are the best wheels bar none

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

They look okay, IMO. I didn't order them back then because I couldn't "get" them visually.

Purpose of thread: first seen in 2005 do they make any more sense today??

I'm trying to collect a bunch of old 911 wheels by Porsche and see how "far out" they are.

Don't get me wrong: if you like them that's all that matters.

Oh..., wait..., if you get spinners..., _that's_ where I draw the line between man and nutcase.

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

For me simply cash cow strategy:

Put ugly standard wheels on the car so people have to buy expensive options rims.

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

It's a evolution form the 964 wheel. Well, thats what I though when I first saw them...

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

i loved the lobster fork wheels, and thought they suited the 997 perfectly. just goes to show, different strokes (or spokes) for different folks. i despise the turbo wheel as well, and would not buy the turbo just because of the wheel (i've never seen a turbo with any other Porsche OEM wheel).

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

I love the Lobsters on mine, wouldn't change them for any other wheel. Suits the car perfectly

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

One of my least favourite Porsche designs. They seem to have come out of leftfield...

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

It's still the Lobsters for me....for the time being anyway..

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

i love them on the 997 I because they compliment the 964 rims as shown above. They have clear resemblence to the older 5 spokes..

I think the reason we have them is cause they were in the origional 997 sketches

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

I liked the Lobster Forks. Unique and different without being garish.

Much better than the BORING TT wheels.

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

It's too bad they never made these in !8 and up

Niiiice! What goes around comes around. Just a matter of time before they (something similar) reappear?

Then again: to make lightweight wheels I guess there's no escape from thinner and thinner spokes?

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

Love the lobster wheels. Unique! Tired of seeing the typical "star" type spoke wheels. Unique because lots of owners have replaced their lobster wheels with after market ones. Good for me!

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

I always like this shot of the lobsters. The extra holes in the outer edge of the spoke creates a nice effect just inside the rim IMO. Plus the lobsters are the lightest of the OEM 997 wheels

    Really? Didn't know that.

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

I think the Lobsters look great! An I've got great taste too...

Here's another shot of the rotating Carrera S wheels (though on my Boxster ) - looks nice though sitting inside the car you cannot enjoy the view

@ Rossi: yes they are the lightest (I recall a thread about the weights but I can't find it)

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

The Carrera S wheel was designed specifically to compliment the 997's styling by conveying a modern and technical feel to a traditional and iconic shape.
I have liked this wheel since first seeing it at the 997 launch, and it reminds me of the original Gallardo wheel which I like even more. To me, the Carrera S wheel integrates with the car better than all the optional Porsche wheels. Now that this wheel is no longer offered, it will arguably be seen as one of the more attractive wheel choices on pre-owned 997s for years to come.

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

I still love my CLUTCH FORKS (look at a picture of an actual lobster fork, and an actual clutch fork, and you'll discover that the lobster fork name got started by a bunch of country-club Porsche enthusiasts who've never seen the inside of a bellhousing, but have eaten their fair share of lobster.. )

They simply fit my car, and look just as fresh today as always (to me).

The wheel I like least on a 997 is the turbo (now THAT wheel is the biggest departure of them all, from my perspective... Looks like something yanked off a Mercedes SUV..)

The new S wheel is "alright", but not nearly as distinctive or industrial-pure-business as the old.

There's no wrong or right answer, but if you use this thread as a "poll", I think your "where'd they come from?" question is moot.... Folks like 'em, THAT'S where they came from... Somebody in Porsche design drew them up, and somebody above them said "hot damn that looks great!".

When the Turbo wheels were drawn, that designer should've been given a one-way ticket to SEMA...

    Such is my opinion!

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

On the + side , Turbo wheels are Forged and made by Fuchs . Here example what an Turbo owner (Italian) did (silver anodized) and improuved them a lot .

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

I have always enjoyed the lobster forks. The 997S Launch Cars were beautiful...Black/Black, Lobster Forks, PCCB...Mmmm

    Check this out

Re: Where'd The Lobster Forks Come From?

For some reason, the modified Turbo rims look like replicas
