    What to do with a 2005 997 42k miles

I got a 2005 911 997 with just over 42k miles. I love the car but it is getting to the point i need to make a decision. Either keep it and continue to rack up the miles or trade it in on something else with lower miles.

I am just worried about resale if it gets over 50k. This car is not my daily driver, but i never shy from an opportunity to drive it.

What do you all think? too many miles on an 05?

Re: What to do with a 2005 997 42k miles

My daily driver '05 is now at 38K and I am waiting for my '09 to arrive (end of November I hope!). I made the choice to trade while the value was still pretty good.

Re: What to do with a 2005 997 42k miles

Personally I believe that you should just keep the car and pay it off. You're already going to get f*&**ed for the mileage whether it's now or down the road. You might as well keep the car until the 991 comes out in 4 or 5 years. Then wait an additional 2 or 3 years and get a used one for a steal at $40k off of sticker.

Nobody but you knows the difference between the 997.1 and 997.2's and the changes don't warrnt losing tens of thousands of dollars. You have a 911 period. Just drive the car and enjoy it. Once you pay it off, every year that you continue to own it will strech out your initial investment. So if you own it until 2015 then you would have spent less money over a certain amount of time to enjoy your car.

I have a 2006 C4S and have no thoughts about selling it until I can purchase a USED 991 at less than $100k, which is going to be a long long time from now.

Re: What to do with a 2005 997 42k miles

I'm not exactly sure but: isn't trade in suuuuch a losing proposition that you might as well keep it and let it's value "plummet."

OTOH, I'd get rid of any new Porsche which has a warranty about to expire.

Either way you're paying. How about just sell it and get an electric car?

If you plan to trade it in a year or two I would sell it now, as its value will go down from this point on. If you like the car and there's nothing wrong with it, no reason not to keep it and enjoy it. If I had a 997.1 I would not trade it for a 997.2.

Make sure that you go to a good service department where all things mechanical are well sorted. 911s last a long time and normally are not too expensive to maintain after the warranty expires - a few of course do have problems and that is why sorting it out during the warranty is key.

Re: What to do with a 2005 997 42k miles

Did you consider the ext. warranty? I ponder how reliable the M97 engine is in comparison to its predecessor on the 996 version. If situation permits, you'd surely find a decent successor from the same company...

Have you received an offer for a 997.2 already?

Re: What to do with a 2005 997 42k miles

I just took the car in to the service to have a once over while it is still under warranty and the car is in excellent condition.

I am looking into purchasing the ext warranty, if i decide to keep it. But the 2k per year price seems high.

If I traded it i would get a convertible or if possible a well price turbo. Have yet to test drive the 997.2. Although i do really like the updated interior and electronics

Re: What to do with a 2005 997 42k miles

FWIW - and I know markets are different across the globe....but if you like it and lets face it, it's probably done most of it's money, then carry on with it - another year won't make the slightest difference on residuals if it were in the UK. On the other hand, if you hanker after a TT - just chop it in & get it!

    Life's a short one.

Re: What to do with a 2005 997 42k miles

Life is short, however, what's the point of such a minute difference. mileage is nothing for real. Even if a $3000 repair arises, it would still be cheaper to keep her.

Re: What to do with a 2005 997 42k miles

I have a 2005 997 with 48,000 miles. Runs great. No problems. I plan on keeping it for many years. I can't afford to always want the latest and I feel that the car should be able to go over 100,000 + miles without major problems. There are many owners of older porsches. This indicates that these cars hold up well. Why would Porsche be given such high accolades if their cars fall apart after 50,000 miles??

Re: What to do with a 2005 997 42k miles

Got my 2006 Carrera S with X51 and Aerokit brand new and specified my way. I don't feel the urge to buy the newer car, however better it may be, specially since I' be taking a $50k + or - hit if I sell it now. I say enjoy it for a longer time so that the hit is spread out over more years and not feel as painful. I am one of those owners of older Porsches too as my daily driver is a 1987 Carrera Coupé in awesome condition.

Re: What to do with a 2005 997 42k miles

Continue to drive it. Drive the hell out of it. Why wind up giving it away to some second owner who will get a steal of a deal on it.

Re: What to do with a 2005 997 42k miles

Keep driving it! You've sustained the worst of the depreciation curve already. The car is awesome and should provide years of thrills. Not to mention, cash is king in the current economy. The opportunity cost of upgrading could be steep. Maybe pick a bargain stock with the 25-30K you'd spend on upgrading, then by 2011 you'll have the cash ready for the new one.

Re: What to do with a 2005 997 42k miles

I e-mailed the technical writer for the Excellence magazine and receive this reply : heck, a 997 engine isn't even broken in at 150,000 miles. Drive the heck out of it.
