    Lambo Factory Tour

I just returned from a month long holiday in Europe, which took me past the Lambo factory again. I did the tour this time which was a lot of fun. No cameras are allowed on the tour, obviously, but afterward I wrote down some of the facts they told us, and some of my observations, for what they are worth. Here they are, with photo's:

Touring the Gallardo line, I noticed VW stamps on the fan belts and some brake parts.

The Gallardo frames are made in Germany at the Audi aluminum plant.

Gallardo engines are built using some sub-contracted components. Murcie V12's use hardly any.

All engines are run for 1 hour before being placed in the cars.

Murcielago seat frames are built by Sparco.

Gallardo seat frames are built by Recaro.

It takes 40 hours of labour to hand cut (using scissors) and stitch (old fashioned sewing machine) the interior of the Murcielago.

The leather used in the Lambo interiors is sourced from Austria, the suede from Italy.

It takes 5 cow hides to create one interior.

The Gallardo line runs on conveyors, the Murcie's are pushed along by hand.

    The factory makes 2400 cars per year, 400 Murcielago's and 2000 Gallardo's.

40% of all Lambo's are sold in the US. Western Europe, Japan and the Middle East are the 2nd - 4th biggest markets after the US.

After assembly, each car is placed on a dyno for 25 minutes at speed up to 180 km/h, then it released for a test drive.

There are 6 test drivers at Lambo, and each car is taken on a 48 kilometre tour around the area, since there is no test track. (No, they are not hiring)

    Here are some pic's:

I love those matte paints, but I've heard they're hard to upkeep. Anyone has any experience with them?

    Re: Lambo Factory Tour

Hi Joe - in your factory tour, what did you observe to be the average age of the assembly line workers?

So each test driver does an average of just 19,200 km per year?

Sounds like McKinsey could earn some easy money there.

I do. I have my motorcycle painted matte titanium grey a few years ago.

There's not hard to maintain. The matte is accomplished by adding a deshining agent to the clear coat when its mixed, however, because it has a little bit of "surface tension" compared to a glass slicked clear coat, you just have to wash it more often.

But the paint and finish itself is as durable as a standard clear coat.

    Re: Lambo Factory Tour

outstanding pics and a great write-up.

    Re: Lambo Factory Tour

Nice write up Jo. I see they have increased Murcielago production since I was there to view my car. They used to make 300 Murcie's per year at that stage.

Did Christina Guizzardi take you on the tour?

    Re: Lambo Factory Tour

    Thanks everyone.

Hmmm, now that you mention it, I'd say nobody was over 45, with a lot being 25 - 35. It varied depending on the job. The guys who climb in and out of the cars to install electronics and that kind of thing where younger than the machinists and engine tech's. I would say the factory promotes their workers into the highly skilled areas over time, as you can only climb in and out of body shells and work in those conditions when you are younger.

Thanks Mike. I don't remember her name, but she had dark curly hair, quite long, and a very distinctive looking face. Something about the eyes maybe. Very nice lady, and quite knowledgeable.

    Re: Lambo Factory Tour

Hmmm I don't know if she changed her hair do since Perhaps it was Francesca.

This is Reventon 0/20, made just for the museum. Reventon 01/20 was sent to a dealer in Las Vegas. So yes, they made 21 in total.

Also, the tour guide said that the Reventon's were all sold to people who had at least 5 - 6 Lambo's already.

    Re: Lambo Factory Tour

nice write up and pics, very informative

Thanks Heist, here is an interesting quote from MotorAuthority about the matte paint and Lambo in particular

Matte paintjobs used to be the choice of weekend racers who’d touch up their cars after a bingle with anything they could get their hands on to protect it from rust, but lately the shine-free surface has been making its way onto more tuner cars and now production models as well. One of the most notable examples is the stunning Lamborghini Reventon, which features a matte grey paint scheme similar to a jet-fighter. Last month’s Detroit Auto Show saw at least eight cars feature matte paintjobs, with Lamborghini once again using the finish, this time for its Gallardo Spyder. GM also had a couple of concept cars covered with matte paint as did Mercedes and Chrysler. Speaking with the Associated Press, Dupont Automotive color technology manager Karen Surcina told reporters matte finishes on specialty or limited-run vehicles would be available in the next two or three years. Carmakers like it because it shows off the pure design of a vehicle while also accentuating most of its lines but it can prove troublesome when it comes to repairs and maintenance. "Every time you take it through the car wash, the buffers are starting to buff it back up and it starts to get shiny there. It's easy to paint, but it's not easy to keep it matte," Surcina explained. For customers, it’s simply a new way of differentiating their cars and it looks like it’s a trend that’s gaining popularity.

    Re: Lambo Factory Tour

The tour guides name is Christina - she is Lebanese and very knowledgeable!

I went to the factory at the end of August this year - some interesting points:

    1. There was no Reventon in the museum at the time.
    2. There was 1 Reventon being made on the Murcie production line - I thought all 20 had already been made...
    3. The Murcielago is hand painted in Italy for traditional reasons.
    4. The reason leather is sourced from Austria is because it is much cheaper than Italian leather.

I have pics in my gallery - does anyone know how I can add them to this post?

    Thanks...

    Re: Lambo Factory Tour

Im not too sure about this but I recall that Lambo had plans to build another 20 Reventon's thus increasing the total production number to 40? I stand to be corrected.
