Practically same performance, the rest is a matter of personal taste.

Re: Audi R8 vs Porsche 997.2C4S Sport Auto

    Carlos,

My point is(as Regionos also agreed) that R8 and 997.2CS are producing almost the same track perfomance. Recent tests on Oschersleben and Nurburgring GP track proved the same-difference between R8 and 997.2CS is marginal...

    Few remarks regarding both cars...

Magnetic Ride is a must have option. I admit that my current R8 have standard suspension but, Magnetic Ride is more advanced and better suspension.
Standard Pirelli P Zero R01(R8 signature, same as N0 or N1 on Porsche) or Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 R01 are pretty good even for two-three laps on the track but, not for more. In R8 case Pirelli P Zero Corsa are about 1,5s faster on the Hockenheim while Michelin Cup tires are about 1,8s faster. Same thing is with 997.2-Corsas and Cups are faster on the track. Just IMHO both tires are not that good for every day use. Corsas are little bit more forgiving on the wet road then Cups...
Ceramic brakes... Not a must at all IMO. Standard brakes on both R8 and 997.2CS are good enough.

For R8 Magnetic Ride is a must. On 997.2CS LSD is a must, SPASM is good but, with standard PASM 997.2CS is about 0,7s slower on Hockenheim. Is it big difference? I can not tell honestly since standard PASM is better for everday driving then SPASM.

My point is that both R8 and 997.2CS are awsome true sportscars that can be used every day(well, honestly 997.2CS is even more usefull as every day car then R8). Your final choice is very much a personal preference! Ideal situation? To own both!
Need a faster one? Well, both R8 V10 and 997.2 Turbo will be worth a wait then!
Need a more track oriented car? 997.2 GT3 then(wait also)!

@Carlos, Reginos and Crash-it is a pleasure to discuss sportscars with you Gents! Openminded true sportscars enthusiasts... That is what I like about rennteam!

    Best Regards,

    Kreso

Kreso, great summary about the tires and suspensions comparison, and I concur on all the points you made.

I only wish I could try the SPASM on the C2 because I'm very curious about its everyday usability (for me the MKI-20mm if 100% OK for everyday use) even though the performance improvement is not huge, maybe the "enjoyment" of the car is improved a lot because of a sportier handling and character This is what I like most about the 997.1's -20mm, not so much the improvement in performance over the PASM, but rather the sportiness of the handling of the car and the sportiness of the character and reactions of the car (steering, balance, etc). The 997.1-20mm car is much more fun and desirable to drive than the 997.1-PASM. But I don't know if this is the same with the 997.2-SPAM vs 997.2-PASM. Especially now that part of the benefit of the 997.1-20mm is the rear LSD, but now in the 997.2-PASM you can get LSD independantly of the SPAMS.

Re: Audi R8 vs Porsche 997.2C4S Sport Auto

    Carlos,
SPASM is indeed adding that extra sportiness that you are talking about! Just for some people it could be too much since that extra sharpenss requieres firmer hand at the steering wheel(and more sensible foot on the throttle). Personally I would go for either standard PASM with optional LSD or SPAMS(LSD is in that package).

With R8 things are little bit different, standard suspension is very, very good indeed. BUT, Magnetic Ride is awsome. Just one thing-you can get an extra upgarde on standard suspension from quattro Gmbh(via very personal request)-same setup as DTM safety car(which is manual BTW). That setup is pretty stiff for everyday use but, on Heckenheim it is another 1s faster and 5s faster around Ring...

Re: Audi R8 vs Porsche 997.2C4S Sport Auto

IMO, SPASM is gives a more sporty and direct feel but it depends a lot on the quality of the road network in your country or region.

In places where roads are not german-perfect, sport chassis could be a PITA on not so well maintained surfaces, especially when you don't drive fast for fun but you just want to transport yourself.

It is true that the ride of the R8 I drove was smoother and the car was more difficult to unsettle on broken surface.

True too, what you say about the S-PASM also happens with the 997.1-20mm, it also requires a bit more attention, while more fun and sportier to drive, its also "less relaxing" to drive.

Thats amazing about the DTM-safetycar setup, 1 sec in HH and 5 in the ring is a lot in just suspension mods! I'm sure its handling will not be as forgiving and practical (un even tire wear?) for the everyday driver but still...

But which would win at a marina race ? The Porsche has SPASM , this one has SPLASHM :

Re: Audi R8 vs Porsche 997.2C4S Sport Auto

nah, I heard the SPLASHM has too much body roll around the corners

Hmmmm, come to think of it, "go down well" might not be a good choice of words.

What's interesting to me is , if you tried to morph most any other car into a boat , it would make for a good laugh. In this case, I'd argue an R8 looks better as a boat ! Could it be due to the side blade ?

BTW, I've seen this real one, a Fearless 28 penned by Porsche Design to recall a Carrera GT, at a couple boat shows but have yet to see one on the water . Originally slated to have a Viper V10, later switched to Mercury Racing power.

great news Kreso as always! what about new colour Aventurinblau Perleffekt?

DTM Chassis setup is too stiff for everyday use.

There are NO other technical special options via quattro Gmbh. There are two new options for MY09 for R8-floor mats with leather piping with R8 singature and inner sills in leather.

Regarding Aventurinblau... It is medium dark blue grey without any green hint(that unfortunately exist in Daytona Grey). It is new color for A6/S6 faacelift and could be ordered on R8 as special color.

Re: Audi R8 vs Porsche 997.2C4S Sport Auto

    Kreso,

according to SA test both cars used Pirelli P Zero tires, could you clarify that issue?

I'd be curious to know how much faster S-PASM is in experienced hands compared to PASM. One comment in the article that I agree with is the fact, that the magnetic ride on the R8 is much more comfortable yet faster than the S-PASM setup on the C4S. That's in fact one of the most impressive things to me...!

Re: Audi R8 vs Porsche 997.2C4S Sport Auto

Yes, both car were equiped with P Zero tires. R8 with P Zero Hero R01 and 997.2C4S with P Zero Rosso N01.

Normal PASM 997.2CS or C4S is about 1s at least slower then SPASM equiped one. Of course, on Hockenheim.

Re: Audi R8 vs Porsche 997.2C4S Sport Auto

    Thanks Kreso!

Re: Audi R8 vs Porsche 997.2C4S Sport Auto

Kreso, is that your R8 in the thumbnail? Looks great, very classy. Most of the R8s I see round here are silver/white but that blue (?) looks superb.

Yes, mine in Mugello Blue with Carbon Sigma side blades.

Just my favourite color for R8 is Monza Silver. It is darker silver with just hint of blue, standard color on new RS6. Monza Silver with Carbon Sigma side blades will be on my next R8. Just that option is price since Monza Silver is Audi Exclusve option. Standard Ice Silver is nice but, too light for me. Daytona Grey is also nice but, too dark... Other colors that I like on R8 are Brilliant Red and Misano Red. Sepang Blue is option for brave one...

Re: Audi R8 vs Porsche 997.2C4S Sport Auto

    Excellent taste!

Have spent some time in the new RS6 as a friend has recently taken delivery of a fine blue (sprint?-i am no Audi expert) avant. I love the understated styling, interior and frankly, outrageous pace. Perfect for him and his young family! I hope you enjoy yours in good health.

Re: Audi R8 vs Porsche 997.2C4S Sport Auto

P.S When you refer to your next R8 is it to be the spider or V10?

Normal R8, just with Ceramic Brakes, Bucket seats and Magnetic Ride. I will trade-in my current R8. R8 V10? We will see but, I will probably go for it also.

Re: Audi R8 vs Porsche 997.2C4S Sport Auto

At the weekend, I was in Germany; attending Audi Sportscar Experience at Lausitz Eurospeedway, driving the R8s and TTS all day long.

Tell you the truth, I like the R8 better than my 997 Carrera S.
I drove both the R-Tronic and manual.
I actually like the manual, especially the shifted gates, but prefer the R-tronic because on the limit driving I don't like to think about the 3rd pedal.
The clutch was lighter than 997 Carrera S and easire to use.

The sound and the interior of the car were better, too, IMO.

All in all, I prefer to have an R8, especially a white one with carbon side blades/ engine cover, bucket seats, full leather and carbon interior trim with R-Tronic. But then the price become as much as a 997 Turbo and unfortunately performance wise it is noticeable slower than Turbo.

If the money is not the main concern, then in terms of looks, interior quality, driving experience and the chassie balance of the car, It is the absolute choice for me.

So enjoy your new ride Kreso, it is really a wonderful car.
