    Singapore F1 Grand Prix

1 week to go till Friday Practice - starting this thread just a little early Needed to take my exhausted mind off the mayhem of the global financial crisis.

But I'm starting this thread a little early because I'm also genuinely excited and fascinated by the prospect of a F1 GP race happening at night under lights on a street circuit. It could be a really wonderful spectacle BUT it could easily be catastrophic if proper safety is not ensured.

Hopefully on Monday 22 Sept, we'll hear the outcome of McLaren's appeal against Lewis Hamilton's 25 second penalty that had the effect of costing Lewis his Spa victory. That debate is still rumbling along...

Also in the background, there is the game of musical chairs regarding driver line ups for 2009. There's some talk about Alonso moving to BMW Sauber to replace Heidfeld. The alternative view I have heard is that Kubica may even move - since his relationship with the team is not as good as it once was. But it seems unlikely he would move since BMW is the best possibility open for him.

The most outlandish theory I read was that Kimi agreed the 1 extra year to his contract - despite his plan to retire at the end of 2008 - just to get 1 more year's pay off in return for supporting Felipe's title bid this year. This would free up a seat at Scuderia Ferrari for Alonso or Kubica. Far-fetched huh? But this is the kind of rumour and speculation that the 'old women' in F1 talk about....

Here's a recent article on this subject:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A41052133

I just want to see an exciting race next weekend - something really different. Here's to Singapore

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

Guess where I am going ??? We are flying on Thursday at 1600hrs and back on Sunday (actually Monday morning) at 0300hrs. Taking the opportunity as I am halve way already being posted to the Middle East. I am looking really forward to the race as well and will be cheering for Lewis all the way, fingers crossed he will get the win.

Any more people going to see the night race in Singapore???

    Cheers,

    Mark

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

Enjoy it Mark But don't forget to take your umbrella! The 10 day weather forecast on The Weather Channel is predicting thunderstorms:

    http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/tenday/SNXX0006?from=36hr_topnav_business

Have fun mate and don't forget to take some pictures for us

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

I think it could be a very, very difficult race driving at night under lights with rain showers. Visibility in the wet at night will be even worse than last weekend at Monza Could be a recipe for multi-car pile-ups and lots of carbon fibre fragments all over the track. Even if one drives safely, the risk of fragments causing punctures is higher.

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

No doubt it will be interesting no matter what the weather looks like.
Personally I think it's a disaster waiting to happen, having a GP at night.
What is the point? If they think we need more drama, then ad more circuits where overtaking is possible.
I think they have been watching too much Granturismo or Need for Speed

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

It's Bernie Ecclestone, the showman, putting on a spectacle (like a theatre impressario or a circus ringmaster) rather than a sport doing what's best for the sport itself. In that sense, I like motoGP much more. Hopefully, common sense will prevail and there is AFAIK a power to hold the race during daylight if it is felt by the race organisers that a night race is not possible given the weather conditions... somebody please correct me if I am mistaken on this.

Ouch, I didn't look at the forecast as yet but like you pointed out already there is a good chance of rain. And if it rains in Singapore it poors (from experience), probably will initiate a couple of safety cars. Indeed need to take my brolly ! I'll take loads of pictures and will post them on the board (there are copy right on any pictures taken so we need to keep it between us )

Not sure what Ferarri is going to do as rain is going to give them another difficult race, good for lewis though, he is a real nice guy and excellent driver (just watched Lewis Top Gear stint last year, nice guy !!!! hup Lewis.

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

Relocated to Singapore about a year ago - the same time as when Singers won the bid to host the Night Race. There's been so much hype surrounding the event, including added froth in the property market due to having another tourist attraction on the tiny island (although now deflated somewhat by the credit crisis fallout!).

Over the last week, it's been very surreal seeing the scaffolding, fencing, track-side seats, corporate boxes and street race lights transforming the financial district (CBD) of the Republic (I'll have a free view of the circuit from my office seat ).

However, as tantalising as it looks, I think it's going to be a huge logistical challenge. Ticketing systems have already imploded several times due to sales volumes (friend of mine said he accidentally received someone else's tickets and that was after a one-month delay, and numerous phone calls to convince the ticketing office he was not the addressee of the wrongly delivered tickets!). Also, I drove along the Nicoll Highway yesterday (the straight stretch next to Fullerton Hotel) to check out the site and it's going to be interesting to see how the drivers fare with the night lights glaring straight in their eyes as they negotiate a near hairpin turn out of Anderson Bridge (which in itself is a pretty narrow)!

Speaking of the lighting - did you know that Lehman is (or was) one of the event sponsors? I wonder if they'll have enough funding to switch on the lights!

Anyway, it's going to be a massive event for Singers and no doubt, it will provide some serious viewing pleasure! If any of you Rennteamers are around for it, am happy to meet up before/after for a few pints!

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

Slightly off topic, but I'm currently negotiating a job at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. The new F1 track is part of the scheme.

Yep - will be there too.....

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

Thrilled at the prospect of seeing a night race.
Hope it works out safe for all involved.
Not real wild about once again having a 7am start local time.

Didn't you like the Moto GP night race? It was quite cool.

I'll be seating at Grandstand A. I usually root for rain during grand prix's but I hope not in this case... They get serious downpours around here and umbrellas will not be allowed!

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

    Hi,

I will be in Grandstand A7 and are really looking forward to the race, we are flying on Thursday !! Staying with friends in Singers to cut our spending a bit, the Grandstand ticket wasn't cheap !!!

    Cheers,

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

Presume the reason its at night is more to do with tv broadcast in Europe beig during the day, unlike Chinese and Japanese GPs.

I have a fear it will be as dull a circuit as Valencia's, hope I'm wrong.

As to Hamilton, the hearing is today, the FIA announcement is tomorrow.

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

Still no data yet from Friday's 1st Practice...

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

WOW massa! .6 faster than hamilton!
Hamilton was very very lucky today not to be knocked out... Thanks to Alonso's problems..

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

We have to admit that Massa is rising, and in the absence of any star drivers in the right cars, he might clinch it!

I wish Kimi was in a position for back to back titles, but something is missing this year. Perhaps, after chasing the title and failing with Mclaren for so many years and after his success last year, he is depleted.

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

I really hope to see Massa win this one. Btw, what a great event. I wished I had gone with my friends. Next year, I am definitely going!

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

Out qualifying second place man by 0.6 secs and his team mate by 0.8 implies the time may have been aided with being a little lighter on fuel too. Great qualifying lap nevertheless.

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

However, there was bitter disappointment for Fernando Alonso, who had looked very fast in three practive sessions but must start from 15th on the grid.

The Spaniard's Renault cut out midway through the second qualifying session leaving Alonso with little alternative but to abandon the car.

"The race is lost. You can't overtake here and I'm starting from 15th, so I will be going out just to lap the track, but it's over already," he said.

What a defeatist. It ain't over till it's over he should know that.

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

    Heidfeld and Barrichello.
I sure hope a three place grid penalty is far greater than a 10,000 Euro fine.
I believe it is, but I still feel like Rubins got a raw deal.

    Re: Singapore F1 Grand Prix

I have a feeling today's race will see a lot of collisions into walls and into each other. It's a very bumpy track in places which will make things unpredictable. Alonso should be more optimistic and positive - if he stays out of trouble, he could actually rise quite high up by the end of the race.

Typical for Alonso, he has no talent/skill worthy of a Champion, he can only win with superior car or position, he is just making his pre-race excuses for not winning the GP. Somehow he thinks the whole world is against him and it will NEVER be his fault for not winning, it will either be the car, the engine, the opposition, the weather, the sun's position, the moon phase or any combinations of the above's fault.
