How to drain a small amount of oil from your 997.

A guy on another board has this problem of an overfilled sump. He needs to drain some oil with oil plug removal.

He's getting mistaken advice saying it can't be done.

FYI, Here's how to do it:

How to drain a small amount of oil from your 997 car:

Get a short sleeve shirt and gloves on

Put a pan under drain plug. Put a large cardboard scrap under pan or do on a surface you don't care about.

With a wrench loosen drain plug

With your fingers start loosening drain plug

NOW READ THIS: you are paying _strict_ attention, you are feeling, looking, yearning, longing, for the tiny little "click" that means the end of the plug thread has hit the end of the drain hole thread. INORDER TO FEEL THIS: you must keep upward pressure on the plug as you loosen the plug.

***Listen OR feel for click by keeping upward pressure on plug***

Keep UPWARD PRESSURE ON THE PLUG

When you get to the "click" (approx 1/2 inch or more of threads will show) just tilt back the plug away from the hole about the width of a human hair.

Oil will dribble out; let an estimated amount leak out. If you do this wrong oil will explode out and you'll get a bath.

REPEAT: keep pressure on the plug, do not let it unseat from the drain hole. Absolutely do not "lose your place" with the exact thread alignment.

NOTE: sounds drastic but ONLY if you lose control of the plug. The only way to lose control of the plug is to stop paying attention. ANYBODY can do this if they pay strict attention.

*****Defusing bombs is easy when you know you won't be killed or injured.***** Be serious: you're defusing an oil-bath bomb.

    Rescrew and tighten plug.

    Add/Check oil to proper level.

Check plug after a few days and a every few weeks for a while, because you necessarily reused the copper (aluminum) crush washer and the plug will have a greater though small chance of loosening.

Alternate solution, wait for the RMS to fail.

"Alternate solution, wait for the RMS to fail."

I thought this was the 997 board.

Re: How to drain a small amount of oil from your 9

I've always found the easiest way is to hand-pump it out by putting the "source" hose of a hand pump ($8 from Auto Parts store) down the filler neck (works on my 73 with external oil tank - no guarantee that it works on a 997).

Tried it on my 997s with a unit similar to but much simpler than this: sorry to report it does not work. It's "impossible" to snake the tubing down more than 8 inches (20 cm) or so.
