I have heard that the 997 Turbo is just a retuned 996 Turbo, that means its the same 3.6 litre engine. Now I am wondering, what if the guys at RUF come up with a kit for 997S, and since the engine has higher displacement, wouldn't it produce more power than the 997 Turbo?
RUF never was too good with normally aspirated cars.
Adding a turbo charger or supercharger to the 997 S wouldn't be really recommendable either.
As far as I know, the Carrera S engine is good up to around 400 HP. So I'm not sure it would really be a 997 Turbo competitor.
The latest rumor I have indicates a 3.8 l engine for the 997 Turbo based on the "old" 3.6 l Turbo engine. This is actually good news if true because very early rumors indicated that Porsche wants to save cost and plans to install a modified version of the current Carrera S 3.8 l.
So my answer would be: definetely wait for the 997 Turbo or get a 997 Carrera S now and get a 997 Turbo after three years (which is actually
my plan...
).
I don't think we'll see a 997 Turbo until spring/summer 2006, so it would be a pitty to loose all that fun in the 997 Carrera S.
This "excuse" worked well for me...
