BMW i3 Lease Rates in US now $159/month

Current lease offer for MY2015 is $159 per month with $4k downpayment (negotiable, afaik) for 30 months.  Pretty cheap (especially if the downpayment is negotiated much lower).

There is a much better i3 on the block which might explain this aggressive price...

Yeah, they just announced a version with a larger capacity battery. This would explain the low rates, although these have had surprisingly low lease rates for some time now.

Re: BMW i3 Lease Rates in US now $159/month

That is quite a deal. And far better than the offers in Germany.

The battery of the new model, by the way, is retrofittable.

Re: BMW i3 Lease Rates in US now $159/month

That's crazy. That's like one lunch for two people at a semi fancy restaurant here! I would have to pay over $2000 a month lease for an equavalent i3 lease here!!!

Re: BMW i3 Lease Rates in US now $159/month

If I understand it correctly, that lease rate reflects rebates from the US Gov't for electric vehicles. Is that correct?

My understanding is that the US EV federal subsidy is a one-off lump sum refund on purchase of a new EV, which the leasing company might benefit from and be able to allow for in calculating its monthly payment.
But I suspect that in this instance the very low rate reflects BMW's desire to clear its stock of "old" cars to make room for the introduction of the newer ones with larger battery storage capacity, which doubles the range between recharges.

Smiley Indeed, also you can write off 4000 EUR now because the government in Germany "sponsors" ELVs and Hybrids (only 3000 EUR) up to a net value of 60k EUR.

Federal subsidy in US is $7,500 per car but not sure how it applies to leases. There are also a handful of states offering rebates.

Re: BMW i3 Lease Rates in US now $159/month

The BMW website mentions a $7500 credit related to leases, I can only imagine that it is the same federal subsidy. yes

It is indeed, and it is limited to the first 200,000 EVs a manufacturer sells onto the US market.
This means that most of the people on Tesla's "waiting list"  today are already looking at a $7,500 price hike before they could ever expect to take delivery.

Re: BMW i3 Lease Rates in US now $159/month

That was mentioned when they started model 3 sales. Actually maybe no Model 3 owner will get the rebate if enough S and X are sold...

Re: BMW i3 Lease Rates in US now $159/month

And that's as it always is with idiotic government subsidies: the better off (model S and X buyers) benefit more than the plebs (model 3 buyers).

It depends. The government could extend the credit...

Re: BMW i3 Lease Rates in US now $159/month

    Tesla prices are bullshit.

The price they talk about publicly includes a $7500 rebate you may never get and $7500 in "savings" for the gas you won't be buying over 5 years.

So when they say a Model X is $69K, you actually have to cut a check for $84K. If they say the Model 3 starts at $35K, you'll actually be paying probably closer to $45K.

Re: BMW i3 Lease Rates in US now $159/month

Well it is marketing and believe it or not they toned it down from what it was when the S was introduced. The cash price is listed right there below to the "marketing" price when you custom build the car.

The federal rebate is real as of today, and so is the gas saving although you need to factor in your own cost of electricity and the estimated price of gas over the next 5 years. So it is fair game IMHO as long as clearly indicated as it is on their website. The way I see it this is no worse than all the fine print fees when you lease a car everywhere else...
