    With the competing cars at the end, the 3.8 S would have been a fairer choice both on price and specification.

    indeed, anyway you look at it, pricewise or by engine, its mismatched against those that they compare it to, they needed to use the 997S here

    But having used the 997S would have made no difference in the review except in the power area... the complaints they had would have been the same, or is the 997S more sound insulated, has different trim, etc?

    I was baffled with the review's noise complaint. I doubt that the 997.2 is any noisier than the 997.1 Most of the noise is probably tire noise and that depends on tire brand and surface type. Roll Michelins over concrete and it will be very noisy. Take Bridgestones over smooth asphalt and it will be quieter.

    This and some other reviewer comments did not bode well for their expertise. it appears these days that sports car reviewers do not distinguish a sports car from a luxobox any longer.

    Extra power changes many things including handling and feel of the car.

    Another point is that in the Top 5 for each category that the Autocar magazine includes at the back pages the 997.2 PDK is ranked first above the R8.
    Not that this is very important to me but it proves once again that you should take what the magazines write not so seriously.

    They want the interface to be as close to the tiptronic interface because many PDK users will come from tip Porsches and/or they will own another auto Porsche, like a Cayenne.

    Personally I tried the system with a very biased view after reading the posts here and several magazines. However, I had no problem to use either the Porsche-style paddles or the push for +, pull for - after the first 10 mins of exposure.

    My friend who was with me who also happens to be an amateur racer had some more adjustability problems but he also enjoyed the drive after perhaps the first 15-20 mins.

    The PDK is superb especially if you use your Porsche as a normal car everyday in all conditions. Going back to a manual is like going back to the 60s.

    It's not the paddles themselves, it's their look. While I have not tried a PDK, I did have a tiptronic before I sold it, and those 'paddles' where smaller, and nicer to look at, I have accidentally shifted while turning the wheel. I do have the PDK option on order with my new order. I'm not due to get that after the winter (my choice) here in the Northeast.
