The Next Generation: New Porsche GT3 almost complete, should arrive in mid '05
    GREG KABLE
    Posted Date: 8/25/04
Porsche is already at an advanced stage of development with its new 911 GT3. And while the car appears almost complete, our sources say you'll have to wait until mid-2005 at the earliest before you can even place an order for the car.

Part of a multifaceted new 997 lineup, the GT3 continues Porsche's tradition of building circuit-compatible cars for the road. Rumors say the new 911 GT3 will ditch the old model's hard-revving 3.6-liter engine for the latest evolution of Porsche's normally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine. In the 911 Carrera S, the new four-valve-per-cylinder 3.8-liter engine generates 350 hp, but Porsche insiders claim power could jump to as much as 400 horses with the redline extended beyond 8000 rpm and other internal modifications such as lightweight pistons, more advanced VarioCam variable valve timing and a larger air intake.

That's up 20 hp vs. the old GT3 and, with appropriate gearing from a standard six-speed manual transmission, should be enough to blast Porsche's latest rear-engine road racer from 0 to 60 mph in something less than the 4.18 seconds we recorded in our tests of a 2004 GT3 (AutoFile, June 7).

Underneath, GT3 is expected to forgo the new Porsche Active Suspension Management system for conventional springs and dampers, both in the interests of weight and race-car compatibility. They will be tuned more aggressively than those found on the standard 911, and provide the new car with a lower ride height. Grip is supplied by standard 18-inch rubber. The three-piece alloys of the prototype in our spy photos will be replaced by wheels designed exclusively for the new GT3.

As these photographs reveal, the new 911 GT3 receives a series of unique styling elements, including a curb-scraping air dam up front boasting three large ducts to direct cooling air to the radiators while also helping to reduce the marginal levels of front-end lift found on the standard 911. The rear gets an adjustable wing hung out over the engine and a reworked valance panel at the bottom of the bumper assembly, housing twin central exhaust outlets.

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

    Exelent find M5...many thanks...

Note the exhaust pipes...similiar to the ones used in the boxster...

There isn't much you can see of the rear wing but of what i can see i dont like it much..

    Thanks again...

    Woshhhhhhhhhhh

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

    1. this car is still camouflaged
    2. the 997 GT3 engine is not based on the 997 Carrera S engine
    3. the wheels are just for testing

The other details are almost correct, even the picture (you just have to try to remove the black tape in your mind ).
I heard something about 40x HP, maybe 400, maybe 403 but the 997 GT3 will definetely have a very powerful engine and displacement is rumored to be at 3.8 l.

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

    Ditto,thank M5er

18" rubber... why would the GT3 have 18" wheels? if the 997S gets 19" over the base 997's 18" wheels? If this is true then we have confirmation of what some of us were saying about the real reason for the 19" on the 997S

BTW, can't say I like the GT3's front bumper or rear wing, I was expecting more 911'ish elegance and maturity. But hey, the GT3 is the car on the model line one should least worry about looks IMO.

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

You can always relie on our good friends at Porsche.

Just when the whole forum "thing" begins to lose a bit of momentum, due to holidays and the fact that there is nothing really going on (well apart from Journoman trying to get a rise) they put their collective heads together and come up with a new GT3 "Exclusive".

What a master stroke! The new car will have the same engine as the 997S! No whiz bang suspension! Slower to 60mph! Faster at the 'Ring. Bigger Cup holders to accommodate the bladder busting Big Gulp for the Colonies! Greater ground clearance to make it possible to drive into Burger King and "Go Large" safe in the knowledge you will be able to drive out with your brake ducts in place! PCCB Sir? Why of course! Standard fitments on the "New GT3"

"Would Sir like wood trim on his steering wheel for the full authentic Pan Carrera feel? It is all the rage this year to match in with our real imitation 'Ring timing slip that is standard fit in the Glovebox!"

If you have a Mk1 my advice is to hold onto it. It is the purest of the breed and will become a future classic in the mold of the 73 RS (in my humble opinion).

    Thank you Herr Doctor.

    P.

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're talking about but maybe this helps: the 997 Carrera S with 20 mm chassis has practically the same performance (track and straight line) as the 996 GT3 MkI. To my knowledge, some 997 GT3 prototypes already have beaten the 996 GT3RS (your car? ) time on the Nordschleife by more than 5 seconds. So again I ask you: what do you mean, I don't get it?

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

    400hp isn't enough.

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

In combination with the cars low weight 400bhp isn't bad at all.

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

O yeah, I guess no DSG box for the 997 GT3?

    I agree !!!!

this in the 2004 interpretation of 993 rs ,like 997 is the modern interpretation of 993 . poor wonderful Porsche design......

    look!

    only Turbo!

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

Good memory sergini, I didn't even notice the 993RS rear wing

You must be joking! a 7:42 in the ring? you sure it wasn't the 997GT2 prototype ? cause that would put it 2 secs faster than a Pagani Zonda not to mention the 996GT2...

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

    ok ..i've done ..

the front is THE SAME of the Cup Car ...look

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

    ..

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

I dislike the rear wing .....maybe I need to see it in real life!

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

I think I need time to like the car...

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

not me, I already love tha car!

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

Everything except the rear spoiler looks fine. I like the spoiler on the CGT, GT2, 996 GT3RS, and 996 Turbo. I do hope they raise the redline to 8500 rpm, keep the fixed ratio steering, and of course, sell it in America.

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

Now that you point that out sergini I recognise the wheels are exactly (though look narrower width) the same as in the Cup car too (not to mention the centered exhaust tips setup, but the the rear bumper isn't, probably becuase it needs to be narrower).

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

stop guys ...look at theese pictures ...

it's possible that the P guys are using a lot of
    black scotch!
it's possible that the wing is similar to the Gt3 MK1 wing.
    what do u think?

Not enough for what??? I suppose 95% of the current GT3/GT3RS owners can't fully exploit the 381 HP.

I think you are right sergini! it looks like that flap you pointed at is just black camo tape and the wings pillars are narrower, good eye

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

Cut a few pieces of sheet plastic , camouflage it up over the real wing with black tape and voila , the envy of every WRX or Evo owner !

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

400 hp is certainly enough as long as it can keep up with the standard F430 in the quarter mile. I hope the handling is good enough that if Ferrari comes out with a 430 CS, the GT3 can keep up on a circuit. Sorry, I like my grudge matches and I've chosen a side.

My only question now is weight.

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

Will there be an RS version or even a "Club Sport" model of old a la 964 and 993, i.e. bare metal and welded-in roll cage!?!

I know Porsche AG reads these pages and whilst they are in the development stage, I might as well voice my opinion and kindly request they build one!

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

Looks like the rear wings from the Mk1 & Mk2 had a baby. I like the car. It may be my next 911.

    Thx for posting!

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

Sergini, good eyes! At first look I did not like the rear spoiler, but if what you said is true, then it will be beautiful!!! One 997 GT3 for me please!

    Re: 997 GT3 - pictures and info.

thanks! and an other for me ...but I 'd like the psm + sportcrono ...so the F430 will be defeat! eheehe!
