    Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

According to autoblog.com the Diesel Cayenne has been confirmed by Porsche.

Various news outlets have speculated that Porsche's first-ever diesel engine would be installed in the Cayenne SUV for 2009, and now Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking has confirmed it. As previously reported, the oil-burner will be snatched from the Audi parts bin and reportedly be essentially unchanged in Porsche guise. That means 240 horsepower and 406 lb.-ft. of torque, plenty to get the hefty Cayenne out of its own way. Instead of spending development money on a Porsche-specific diesel engine, Zuffenhausen has instead invested in a hybrid system, which will also see duty in the Cayenne around 2010. By then, a lithium-ion battery will likely be ready to replace the prototype's nickel-based unit.

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

Would anyone really consider buying this deal in diesel? Especially in the US where we once had $5 fuel in Texas. I have a Ford Diesel and I haven't driven it in 4 months due to fuel prices. I guess I'm not sure what the point would be in owning this car with a diesel. Maybe I don't get it.

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

    fuel economy is higher

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

In europe, or at least in the ntherlands, the resistence to diesel cars is not that high. Also, diesel is much less expensive over here than petrol.

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

Ditto for southern France about diesels and diesel fuel. Both are everywhere, and with the dollar euro exchange now, believe me the cost of fuel (gasoil) is significant and the savings appreciated.

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

Our diesel prices are .60 to .75 cents more per gallon. I agree with the fuel mileage, but I just don't equate a Porsche SUV with good fuel mileage. I can understand it from Audi or MB.

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

For me it is more about why to have a diesel when you have an hybrid? And both coming on in the same year? Maybe they are not at all sure about the hybrid catching to the people?

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

Current hybrid are useless. Maybe the Caynne will change that. Plug in? Maybe...

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

Just wondering. Why is a cayenne hybrid useless?

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

They save little gas unless you do city driving. Do you really need an SUV in cities?

Who knows what the Cayenne hybrid will be in real life, I just said the current crop of hybrids are useless.

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

I don't know if it's the new forum or this info just wasn't here:

According to my dealer, Cayenne Diesel will be officially unveiled on Monday.

250 hp 3.0 V6 (uprated VAG-unit) + tiptronic.. About 8-10% more expensive than Audi Q7 with the same engine.

Equipment level the same as in V6 gasoline Cayenne.

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

    i want a diesel with 550 horses.

Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

Hybrids are the worst, and now seeing SUV hybrids is making me sick. who will actually buy these things?? The future us in electric. None of this hybrid saving 2% fuel while costing 190% bs. I'm sorry but everyone that owns a Prius, has the right idea and thinks he's decision is the solution, when in fact they are at the root of it all :( Really really sad to see Porsche inveset into Hybrid Lies Technology :(

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

Cayenne diesel is ONLY for those that are fuel consumption cautious hence not 550hp diesel on the agenda !!!!!

I'm not sure, Porsche will bother putting its logo on the engine .... I suspect it could stay with the Audi badge on.

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

    And...when?

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

Cayenne diesel will be announced and unveiled in the next few weeks.

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

Here is southern France, almost all large sedans and SUVs are diesels, as well as most newer small cars.  I have not done the gas/diesel mileage cost calculation, but clearly folks here have decided diesels are more cost efficient without giving up performance.  So my guess is that at least in the European markets, the Cayenne diesel will do well.

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

Yep, in Europe, diesel powered SUVs represent over 90% of total SUV sales .... No doubt Porsche will sell a few.

This being said, I doubt it will be available in the US and in other regions/countries...

Re: Porsche Cayenne Diesel finally confirmed

Here is the official press release ...

Premiere at Porsche: Cayenne with diesel engine

Stuttgart. The Executive Board at Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has given the go-ahead: from February 2009, the sports car manufacturer will offer a Cayenne with a diesel engine and thus extend its range of drives for the sporty all-terrain vehicle further, once again. This decision was taken in response to changed legal regulations especially in European markets, resulting in tax incentives for vehicles with diesel engines.

Furthermore, Porsche's stake in the Volkswagen Group, the world’s largest manufacturer of modern diesel engines for passenger cars, has opened up new opportunities to utilise diesel technology.

Porsche will equip the Cayenne with a three-litre V6 turbo diesel engine with 240 hp (176 kW) supplied by Audi AG, a subsidiary of the VW Group. The average consumption of the Cayenne Diesel is 9.3 litres per 100 kilometres, with CO2 at 244 grams per kilometre.

The spontaneous throttle response and the high torque characteristics of this diesel engine deliver the required performance levels for a sporty all-terrain vehicle such as the Cayenne. The substantial torque of a maximum of 550 Newton metres complements the sporty chassis dynamics and provides a high degree of control to offer driving enjoyment that is typical of Porsche.

In response to customer demand, the new Cayenne model will initially be offered in Europe. Preparations for market introduction in other countries are underway.

The Porsche Executive Board is confident that it will maintain the long term market success of the Cayenne series in the long term with the low-consumption V6 turbo diesel. In the last financial year 2007/08, 45,478 units of this series (which currently incorporates five different models) were sold - more than ever before in a financial year.

With the introduction of the Cayenne Diesel, Porsche is consistently continuing its commitment to reduce fuel consumption. As early as Spring 2007, the sports car manufacturer had equipped the new generation of the Cayenne series with engines with petrol direct injection that consume up to 15 percent less fuel in real-world driving conditions. Since the summer of 2008, Porsche has also offered the most recent generation of the 911 series with direct-injection petrol engines. The sports car manufacturer is also working on another Cayenne variant with hybrid drive that will consume less than nine litres of fuel per 100 kilometres and will be launched onto the market at the end of the decade.

The new Cayenne with diesel drive will be available from dealers from February 2009 onwards. Equipped with the proven Tiptronic-S automatic gearbox as standard, the Euro base price will be EUR 47,250. In Germany, the Cayenne with diesel engine including 19 percent VAT and country-specific equipment costs EUR 56,436.
