I have a 4 year old and would like to take him along in the rear seat when my 997 finally arrives.
I noticed Porsche sells child seats - are these specially designed for the rear seat, or do other child seats work just as well?
Of course you can use other child seats too but Porsche recommends the Porsche child seat because it is a perfect fit, both regarding maximum possible safety and size.
Porsche also recommends to transport children up to 12 years of age in the rear compartment only but if you plan to take your child in the front seat, you should definetely go for a Porsche child seat.
The 997 has a completely
different airbag OFF system for the co-driver seat compared to the 996, the information somebody wrote in this thread is
wrong.
You can order or retrofit an airbag OFF device kit which works similar to the Cayenne airbag OFF switch. After the install (it does
not come as a standard option!), you can turn off and on the airbag with your key and you also get a little lamp next to the handbrake which tells you if the airbag is off or not. As far as I know, the central display in the speedo cluster also tells you when you start the car if the airbag is off when the airbag OFF device is installed.
Or to make it short: you need that airbag OFF kit if you want to transport your kid in the co-driver seat and a Porsche child seat is also almost mandatory because with the kit come also ISOFIX connectors which will be installed too. If you want to transport your kid only in the rear, the airbag OFF device kit is
not needed but a Porsche child seat is still recommended, though not mandatory.
My little girl (she's almost 4) loves to ride with me in the rear because the rear window is pretty low and she can look outside. She also loves it because she can put her feet down to the ground in the rear. But of course she usually prefers to drive in the front with me but the airbag OFF device retrofit kit isn't available until early september.
