    998 mule caught testing - launch 2011

    http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/Porsche-911/234020/

Re: 998 mule caught testing - launch 2011

Very interesting. This means that the rear-engined 911 lives on in fairly well-known form. Weren't there voices out there which said that the 998 would be mid-engined?

Re: 998 mule caught testing - launch 2011

No way to change the 911 formula. It is something unique in spite of certain imperfections in the configuration.

There will be an upgraded cayman/boxster so the mid-engined choice exists.

What Porsche needs is a front engined GT/sports in the mould of the 928 to take on Mercedes, Aston and the Italian boys.

That is coming too with the Coupe version of the Panamera.

    +1

Am I the only one who thinks this these photos are merely of the 997.2 in testing..

were are in 2008, it would be a little too soon to start to see pics of the 2011 generation 911, perhaps in one years time.... which would then still leave two years further before launch

so???we saw the first photos of the 997 mules back in 2001/2002 just mere months after the 996 facelift.

if i'm not wrong the 2nd post i made in this forum some 5 years ago was a scanned article from a 2002 portuguese mag showing photos of the 997 mules.

Point taken, but the pics show an almost exact copy of the new 997.2 .. surely there would have be some changes (headlights/rear lights)

Exactly. In the next few months we'll see test cars with heavy black tapes all around driving by .

Re: 998 mule caught testing - launch 2011

A fellow GT3 owner told me that he was at the factory when the GT3 launched, which was late 2006 if I remember correctly, and saw working prototypes of the 997 GT2, which is a car that came on sale just now. Judging from that, we don't have to be surprised that the 998 is driving around disguised in the current body.

What else would the development department do with its time?

From what I have seen, production line car manufacturing (into which category the 911 falls) is such a meticulous process that there have to be years of lead time to get it right. Building a prototype is something any handy team can do. It's the tooling and supplier stuff that takes so long to get right and the reason why the prototypes must be in existence years before they come to market. It's also natural that it takes years to try out all the new approaches, technologies and materials that appear over time and to get them all working together to make the car be a 911.

Re: 998 mule caught testing - launch 2011

Then why are we getting so excited by these pics? The outside of the car is basically a mkII 997, and we can't tell anything about the inside. So what's the big deal?

Re: 998 mule caught testing - launch 2011

    Awesome.... its going foward!

Excitement, curiosity, speculation and conspiracy theories regarding whether of not we've seen the last of the GT1 block and if the increased track is the result of 2 additional cylinders.

The additional cylinders would make the car longer, not wider...

Re: 998 mule caught testing - launch 2011

Waiting patiently for the 998. No hurry.

Re: 998 mule caught testing - launch 2011

yes before we get one thread every day on the 998 or 991 someone should start a threat for it.. because Porsche has started working on it a while ago

Re: 998 mule caught testing - launch 2011

Also, one of the reasons (if this is a 998 mule), besides testing mechanical/interior body components or the introduction of very recent facelift, why Porsche havent made any changes exterior to the mule is probably because nobody (we fans) knows how the car will look like.

We already knew that the "new" 911 in 98 would have boxster hadlamps.

We knew in 2001 that the facelift 911 would receive the headlamps of the turbo and we also knew that the 997 (even before mules started rolling) would go back to the old (and marvelous) shape of the 993 so we had an idea.

This one we know absolutly nothing how the design will evolve (or retrogade)

    964 futuristic style headlamps?

    Anywhone has an idea?I dont.

We'll see in about a year.

    Until then, WWWWWWWOOOOOSHHHHHHHHHHH

Re: 998 mule caught testing - launch 2011

LOL this has to be the least news worthy news article Ive read in ages. The pics are just a 997.2 (as said earlier in this thread) and the words say nothing other that 997.2 news plus a wider track.... Not to mention the apparent slight drop in BHP for both cars.

LMAO - "The new car will be cleaner and faster than the old model". No Sh*t Sherlock! I bet that took auto-journalist of the year to work out that Porsche would want to do that with the next model - Nah, it must have been a leak, nobody could possibly have worked that info out without inside knoweledge.

What a complete waste of time - smacks of nothing more than press scare mongery to try to put people of buying a 997.2 - "your new car is old already!!!"

    Agree totally!

    They also wrote:
"There also appears to be a slight alteration to the front end suspension geometry, with an increase in camber providing a greater tow-out effect".

Do they have a problem finding proper material to fill their pages?

Re: 998 mule caught testing - launch 2011

    This thread is going ridiculous.

Of course the journalist said it will be faster and cleaner.

Doesnt everybody say this, the brands, the journalists, the devil, the angels, etc....???

If the photo of this car is posted everywhere with the title "998 mule caught"...it's because it probabbly is...somebody just leaked that it was

how many spy cars you see on pages with titles "new mercedes, new bmw z4, new range rover, new johm smith, new james dean with fairytale" and it's confirmed to be what the title says.

And i dont know what's the problem of the car look like a 997.

The 987 mule also looked like a 986 boxster. The Panamera road protypes loooked like cayenne's and audi a8's.

    i'm out

    Woshhhhhh

Re: 998 mule caught testing - launch 2011

Good a 998 thread. I was getting bored of the 997.2 ones.

Re: 998 mule caught testing - launch 2011

I heard from a good source that the next 11 will not be serialized as 998. 991 seems to be it.

    991...so be it...

just for historical reason...my 1st post on the board (back in 2003) was my presentation, my 2nd post was the 997 spy photos from a Portuguese mag (dated from 2002) and my 3rd post was an argument with mr NBery (because of some design RC was supposed to do about the 997 or the F430, or something like that).

Nbery used to be a real pain in the ***......oh boy, i'm feeling nostalgic and i miss those good gold tiimes.

    Nevertheless, 991 it is....

So, the order of models goes like this:

    911, 964, 993, 996, 997, 991, 992, 994, 995, 998, 999?

I think the new naming convention goes by the engine number.

    M96 = 996
    9A1 = 991

Re: 998 mule caught testing - launch 2011

Keep in mind that the 997 replacement, the 991, has already been designed. (Much like the 997 was already designed when the 996 was first released).

The design folks are way ahead of the other departments at Porsche.
