Re: Does your 911 eat rear tires?

I've driven my original Michelin PS2s for 11678 miles so far. Still plenty of treadwear left

Re: Does your 911 eat rear tires?

for those new to the 911 automobile,--they use up rear rubber. Period. It's the negative camber that helps them handle and that takes a toll on the insides of the rears. You didn't buy the 911 because it was practical like a Yugo did you? You have to pay to play.

Re: Does your 911 eat rear tires?

I currently have 31K on a 997 2S Cabrio. Tire wear as follows:
-Original Pirelli P Zeros 9K, replaced rears due to inner sidewall damage on one tire. About 2-3K in wear left.
-Replaced both ends at 22K with Michelin PS2. Some wear, less than 2K, remained in all four. Used 305's in rear.
-Now 31K, replacing rears with about 2K left. Fronts OK.

All of the tires have worn evenly, with no abnormal patterns. No suspension realignment to date. Car has been driven vigorously, but no autocross.

Both brands have worked well, with no problems & no flats. Excellent dry & wet traction. Both brands absolutely useless on snow & ice, to the point of being scary.

Re: Does your 911 eat rear tires?

Tyre wear depends on how fast you go around corners, and on how hard you brake and accelerate.

Re: Does your 911 eat rear tires?

I am very happy with my Bridgestone high performance ALL-SEASON tires. For the street they are hardly a performance compromise, they last 3x as long as the michelins, and are perfect for cold, and wet days (even in the snow). They are not at all noisy and cost 1/2 as much as the michelins. Of course they are the correct size as well - 295 width on the 19 inch wheels.
Unless you dump the clutch you can not break these tires loose, even (and expecially) in the rain. You would have to corner like a madman on the streets in order to notice a traction advantage vs. the summer tires out there. It is a great way to make your 997 a daily driver again. Having put over 150 K miles on a 996 and 997 I will not go back to michellin as they are great for about 4K Miles and then they get noisy for the last 5K miles.
I know - ALL Season tires on the 997S - but those on this forum who have tried them have made mostly positive comments. I certainly like them but then I am very practical when it comes to Porsche ownership and am not easily sucked into spending money for the sake of spending money (bragging rights etc.)

Don't be mis-lead. In the past I checked the tires by reaching deep into the wheelwell and feeling the top of the tire. I ran my finger along the inside groove until I hit the wear bar. If the wear bar was not yet level with the tread, I presumed I still had some wear left.

This technique doesn't work. Twice now I have been fooled. You have to physically get down on your hands and knees, look under the car, and inspect that inside edge. One day it will look like there's plenty of tread. The next day the cords are showing.

Re: Does your 911 eat rear tires?

Surprisingly, my front tires are getting worn quicker than the rears! I do 90% of my driving in the city in stop and go traffic, with a lot of manoevering. This must be the reason. FYI, the wear is very even, so it cannot be blamed on underinflation or wrong geometry of the car.

Too much use of the brakes in stop-go traffic perhaps.
