    How fast are F1 cars?

I saw this and found it quite interesting. These are lap records for Fiorano.

Schumacher holds the record for fastest lap at Fiorano in the the F2004, at 0'55.999. To give you an idea of how fast that is, here are some other times:

    430 Scuderia - 1'23.9
    Enzo - 1'24.9
    599 GTB - 1'26.5
    360 CS - 1'26.5
    Porsche 959 - 1'37

FWIW, Jean Alesi managed 1'00.31 in 1994, driving the 412T.

Re: How fast are F1 cars?

    412T!?!

Re: How fast are F1 cars?

A little dated (and perhaps a little 'staged') but his video shows the difference quite well:

    >>F1 v Porsche v Peugeot <<

    Keeping the Ferrari theme

    >> F1 v F40 <<

    So, they're quite quick.....

    Yeah, this:

Re: How fast are F1 cars?

In terms of Top Speed, in low downforce configuration, they can top out around 210 mph but they're not as fast at Indy cars which regularly run around 220-225 mph.

In terms of braking, nothing short of F-18 on an arrested wire aircraft carrier landing out brakes them.

Agility wise, again, nothing is touching them.

Re: How fast are F1 cars?

Not sure all these facts are correct (c/c from another site), but some of them are really impressive :

    > F1 car is made up of 80,000 components. If it were assembled 99.9% correctly, it would still start the race with 80 things wrong!

    > When an F1 driver hits the brakes on his car, he experiences retardation or deceleration comparable to a regular car driving through a brick wall at 300km/h (188mph).

    > F1 car can go from 0 to 160km/h (100mph) AND back to 0 in 4 seconds

    > An average F1 driver looses about 4kgs (8.8lbs) of weight after just one race due to the prolonged exposure to high G forces and temperatures for little over an hour.

    > Without aerodynamic down force, high-performance racing cars have sufficient power to produce wheel spin and loss of control at 160km/h (100mph).

    > In a street course race like the Monaco grand prix, the down force provides enough suction to lift manhole covers. Before the race all of the manhole covers on the streets have to be welded down to prevent this from happening.

and I'm sure you know the Scud has the F2004 F1 gearbox

Re: How fast are F1 cars?

    An F1 BMW stops from 200 km/h to 0 in just 55 metres. A 911 GT3 in 131 metres...

Re: How fast are F1 cars?

WOW these facts are always incerdible to read.
    Please guys find some more!

Can you imagine road cars some day achieving this level of performance?

Re: How fast are F1 cars?

As for the F1 facts, some are only partially true. It's good to read them with common sense unless you are sure someone in the know put them together.

---80,000! LOL! Maybe if you count every piece of carbon fiber weave. LOL! It's only a few thousand at very best.A few thousand.

    > When an F1 driver hits the brakes on his car, he experiences retardation or deceleration comparable to a regular car driving through a brick wall at 300km/h (188mph).

---Uh, that would mean the driver would be dead. G's forces would be too great and too sudden. It's more like 3/4 G's over a prolonged period to dissappate the forces.

    > F1 car can go from 0 to 160km/h (100mph) AND back to 0 in 4 seconds

    ---True.

    > An average F1 driver looses about 4kgs (8.8lbs) of weight after just one race due to the prolonged exposure to high G forces and temperatures for little over an hour.

--If someone lost 8.8lbs in an HOUR they would probably DIE or have massive brain failure! It's more like 2-3 liters = 4 or 5 lbs of which they over hyrdrate and injest 8 liters of water prior to the race to compensate for the losses.

    > Without aerodynamic down force, high-performance racing cars have sufficient power to produce wheel spin and loss of control at 160km/h (100mph).

    ---All cars do. So what?

    > In a street course race like the Monaco grand prix, the down force provides enough suction to lift manhole covers. Before the race all of the manhole covers on the streets have to be welded down to prevent this from happening.

----That's true. For many street courses they have to tack weld down the manhole covers.

^^^A lot of that crap is completely off base. Whoever wrote it was smoking some good weed. I've included edits above.

Not without a huge amount of downforce and downforce means lots of drag which means poor fuel economy. I doubt it will happen...

I would NOT like to tbe the first person with that kind of braking on the road. It's a hazard.

Think: NO ONE else is equipped with that sort of braking performance so you'd be the victim of rear end collision to no end.

Re: How fast are F1 cars?

A road car would never be able to achieve that level of braking due to lack of adhesion offered by road legal tires and the sheer momentum of a ~3000lb car. It would be cool to have the ability scare the crap out of your friends though!

Quite frankly, many people don't watch the road anyway and don't even start braking until it's too late when there's a risky situation, so the point is probably moot .

Re: How fast are F1 cars?

Well I can recall the time when the first ABS equipped cars in Germany had a warning sticker on the rear window: ABS!
When I had the chance to drive a F1 myself (though an old model from the early nineties) two things impressed me most: braking power (completely insane - even more impressive than acceleration) and cornering precision/corner speeds (still on the good old slicks though) The brakes were definitely not suitable for a streetcar ("useless" when cold and you had to hit them with an attitude like kicking your worst enemy somewhere...) And then: how to cool these things in a normal car body ?

Here are some more, and more realistic, facts:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_One_car

Autocar included a Jaguar F1 car in their 0-100mph-0 test a few years back and it did it in 5.97 sec.
The highest "speed trap" top speed I have seen in a race was DC doing 373 kph in a McLaren at the old Hockenheim circuit.

Every year the F1 circus goes to Hockenheim (next race), I'm reminded of how they totally ruined this once fantastic track

Re: How fast are F1 cars?

    Agreed, it was fantastic

It was one of my favourite circuits to watch, and to drive (simulated) in Grand Prix 1-4. The bipolar nature if the track is very challenging. From the startline you head out into the trees with no spectators and the road ahead is straight except for the three chicanes, then you enter the twisty stadium section where you just try to keep it on the road (due to very loww downforce) amongst 150 000 crazy Germans.

And in the good ol' days they didn't even have the chicanes

The hairpin at the revised circuit does provide some overtaking, but it is nothing like the old layout....

Re: How fast are F1 cars?

    The highest speeds and best track lay-outs were in 1985;

Keke Rosberg AVERAGED 160.7 mph for the lap at Silverstone

And the winner for all time ball testers was the corner at the end of the mistral straight at Paul ricard

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mx7smI3_vtg

Re: How fast are F1 cars?

Yes, that corner... either you make some time or you end your race

I will be at Paul Ricard in September with my Scuderia. I hope I will not mess up...

Re: How fast are F1 cars?

Speaking of ABS....a wonderful invention, it allows the average driver to hit the car in front, nice and straight, rather than sliding in sideways
