No benefit from hydraulic rack with special fast track ratio?

Hydraulic rack advantage is over blown. And faster ratio is not always beneficial, it could make the car too nervous, and McLaren's are already that with the narrow tires.

I believe Porsche is already on their 4th generation of electric rack. The current Cup car is electric, and I had been racing it, honestly, it is providing fantastic feel at the limit.

Bet you anything, if we put some journalists back to back on blind tests, they WILL NOT be able to tell a difference, or even might pick the electric rack instead.

According to this, Porsche is using Electrohydraulic steering on the Cup (same as McLaren on road cars).  Means hydraulic rack with the pump spun by an electric motor, instead of a belt from the crankshaft  You may have confused this for the pure electric rack (called Electromechanical power steering on GT4 CS) now used on all Porsche street cars and GT4 CS (only Porsche race car with electric steering - all 911 race cars still use hydraulic):

Yes thanks for the clarification Grant! Smiley

In conversation, they are all called electric steering, both got lumped into one.

I have the ClubSport and races also the Cup car, there is really no difference in feel either. If anything, I like the steering in my ClubSport more, but that might more or less due to the mid engine layout.

    Guys,

Do we know if the gear set in the new manual will be fixed - nice and low and tight, similar to 991.2 GT3 set?  If they stick with the current POS, Sun will wait for the PDK

With the rumors of the redline starting with a 7, there’s not much possibility of better gearing.  And if it gets PDK rather than PDK-S, gearing there won’t be significantly better (only 6 performance gears).

But with more power and torque, it will pull those gears better...

    Re: 4 L GT4 ETA?

I have still some doubts about a second batch with PDK.
Maybe the rumors are inaccurate and the "second batch" will be the RS, which is PDK only.
I see no real reason to bring the PDK in the GT4 later. The previous GT4 was also manual only.

I am pretty sure the gearing will stay as long as it was. I still dont understand why Porsche "like" this long gears 1-4.
Maybe a chance for S-PDK in the RS, but I think Porsche will artificially limit the cars capabilities (RS and non-RS).

The GT4 will be stuck with the anemic 2nd gear.

That will be Tom that posted it.

He is racing that and could have asked for advance information.

I haven't been checking on the GT4 as I am occupied with racing the Cup car lately.

    Re: 4 L GT4 ETA?

It looks like the 4.0 is out of the picture for the newest GT4.  Since it is used for homologation for the GT4CS it now appears that it will have the same engine as the GT4CS, which appears to be the 3.8 used in the original GT4 but upgraded with the x51 power kit.  If you remember that kit increased the hp at the top end but didn't really touch the torque.  My guess here is because of the PDK used in the GT4CS.  It is torque limited.  It might've been able to go with the increased torque of a 4.0 but stroking the 3.8 to 4.0 would be a challenge to get the required hp bump of 35 hp to 420 hp.  The GT3 engine is out due to cost IMHO.

Now the 4.0 with a x51 power kit might still be used in the "non-existant" GT4RS since to achieve a 15 - 20 hp bump over the regular GT4 is easily manageable now.  In addition this version street car might get the increased aero used in the CS as well.  Remember that PAG already did this 3.8 to 4.0 engine change once previously on the much sought after 997 GT3RS 4.0.  So lets hope that history will repeat itself with a SE GT4RS.

For now this is my WAG.

    Re: 4 L GT4 ETA?

It is more the manual transmission which is torque limited. It is already at it's limits in the 385hp 981 GT4.
More torque would require an updated manual trans. The newer manual 718 GTS is also already torque limited to 420Nm. PDK version has 430Nm. Here also no really updated manual.

If they don't want to upgrade the manual transmission, they may have to use the old 3.8 with X51 kit and modification for the particulate filter and WLTP.

I think they only have the 6 speed GT3 manual for more torque. Maybe they don't want to use it in the cheaper GT4.

It spins the wrong direction for use in the GT4 (and ratios would be too short instead of too tall with that motor) Smiley

It's not even a challenge, a simple gearing would have made that possible if they are going to. They did that with the 911RSR already remember?

    Re: 4 L GT4 ETA?

Whoopsy, for clarification, what tranny does the RSR use?

    Re: 4 L GT4 ETA?

More or less I wanted to say that a manual 718 GT4 is unlikly to get more torque than the predecessor, if they don't want to improve the manual they have right now for the 718/981 GT4.

The GT3 manual is no option and I am still not convinced that we will see a PDK GT4 without RS letters.

So using a more torqui 4L engine could have been droped, in favour to update the older (and I assume cheaper) 3.8 with X51 and the particulate filter.

As always disapointing the manner Porsche apply to the Cayster platform. Mainly driven by holding them down to protect the 911.

Personally, I fully expect Porsche to maximise economies of scale and competitive advantage by installing the excellent Le Mans winning 4.0 naturally-aspirated motorsport flat-six in as many GT and RS models as possible...  image.gif
