    Looking for advice

    Hello everybody,
I relocated to the Uk a few months ago and before getting here I ordered a 997S at the Porsche Reading center. I put a deposit down and now need to make the decision on whether to buy the car or not. The car speced as I want it will cost 76,000 pounds. Passing near my bosses house the other day, I noticed the UK's biggets Ferrari dealership (importer for the UK) and they had F360 Modenas for very little more money than the 997. The 997 was to be my daily drive, my wife taking my E Class and we would sell my Lotus Elise toy to make room in the garage... Now I went to try the F360 F1 and I;m in absolute awe of the car. I'm thinking of buying that car for 2 years and as I buy put an order in for a F430 that I can pick-up in 2 to 3 years after I trade the 360... Decisions, decisions, decision,... what do you guys think? Drive the Merc as a daily driver and have the F as a toy for week-ends and sometimes go to work or get a 997S as a daily driver?
    Thanks for your views
    JM

    Re: Looking for advice

Did you already testdrive a 997 Carrera S?
Did you also testdrive the 20 mm chassis option?
Are you more of a technical/driver kind of guy or is appearance and style more important to you?
Performance-wise, the 997 S and the 360 Modena are up to the same level, not much difference here.
The 997 Carrera S feels (and is) more sporty with the 20 mm chassis but I didn't testdrive the PASM setup yet, so I don't have a comparison.
Also ask yourself if a toy in the garage is enough for you or if you want to drive it daily. Tough decision, I know.
Finally, if you have little kids, they surely want to drive in Daddy's sports car too. Think about it.

I have a 997 Carrera S with 20 mm chassis/LSD, PCCB and Chrono Sport. I just love this car, it is so much fun. But I would lie to you if I'd say "forget about the Ferrari, get the 997". The Modena still has it's charme and sex appeal, even if my favorite is still the F355.

Have you talked to your wife?

Good luck with your decision and be happy that you have to make such a decision.

    Re: Looking for advice

    RC,
No I have not test driven the 997 yet. With regards to my skills, I hold and FIA C license, have owned and raced a Supercup car and currently own a 160HP race version of Lotus Elise so though I'm certainly not in the real pro leagues I can hold my own with pretty much anyone. The 2 back seats advantage of the 997 is a real plus. I have a young son (5) that would love to drive with me and his mom... On the other hand, there is something sooooooo special about a Ferrari and the F1 box that I just can't get it out of my system. Maybe the trick is to get the Ferrari for 2 years and then just see what happens. When I drive (I have office near London and near Leicester, 2 hours away from london) I'm mostly on the phone anyway so I don't think that I really need a 997 or a F to do that...
It's a real tough choice, even more complicated by the fact that the residual values on F are incredibly high here in the UK so there's a good chance that i could drive one for a full year for less than 10,000 pounds, everything included. It seems like it's just too good a deal to pass!!!
I am however very confused... I guess that I now need to drive the 997

    Re: Looking for advice

So long as your not parking on the street in central London on a daily/nightly basis, I'd go for the Ferrari. Otherwise take the 997. It's less visually eye-catching, therefore avoiding any unwanted jealousy i.e. 'keying'.

    Re: Looking for advice

It is not clear to me what your intention are for the car. If it is to track it on a regular basis then clearly the 997S is the better buy. It is newer with warranty coverage (ahem assuming you do not openly acknowledge your track use).Downside with Porsche is the substantial depreciation will incur as soon as you drive it off the showroom floor. The 360 will hold up much better.

On the other hand if you want a car that will provide you thrills on the road then clearly the 360F1 is the ticket. I had a 2001 360 Spider 6 speed and turned it in for 2004 Spider F1. In my opinion, the F1 is the best the $10,000 purchase I ever made. All of my future car purchases will have the sequential transmissions. They are fabulous!

A word of caution. Depending on the year the F1 have had some problems. Check the car and see how much is left of the clutch. if you do a lot of city driving you probably will get 20,000 miles and require a clutch replacement around $4500. Highway driving is around 30,000.

Went through a similar decision making process myself (test drove a 360 F1 at Egham too). Personally I've gone for the 997 - the 360 IS awesome but I was worried about the expense of running it as an everyday car (I don't have kids and run a 'practical' car too so that wasn't a problem) - at that price point I was looking at a 3-4 year old car and all the issues that may possibly come with it, which with Ferrari could be VERY expensive, even compared to Porsche. And must admit whilst I loved the F1 gearbox I've heard a lot of things about the clutch, especially on the earlier cars - software updates or not.

    Re: Looking for advice

Can you tell me more about issues etc?
They give me a 12 months warranty no matter what...

    What year is the 360?

Many questions can be answered at the site below. It is used primarily by Ferrari owners and enthusiast.

I am assuming you mean Maranello in Egham? I'm not aware that they have any 360s at anything close to Pounds75K that are not at least 3 years old. I would love to own a 360 and a Porsche TT , but until recently had no garage. I am about to rent one close to me during the next week. However, I will be sticking with my Porsche and have put down a deposit on a 997S (final decision subject to actually driving one - though having read RC's excellent review I doubt I will cancel the order). This weekend toy business is something I think most people on this board , myself included, definitely do not espouse. If you have a car its for driving, not looking at/ and or posing in on the weekend. Given the performance figures for the 997S a 3 year old 360 just doesn't make sense to me -unless of course I have to be able to say I have a Ferrari. Don't get me wrong, I would love to own a Ferrari, and now that I'm getting the garage (unfortunately only room for one car)I'm thinking seriously about ordering a F430 - and then cancelling it when the 997TT arrives Every true sportscar fan with the means to afford it, would always have a Porsche TT/GT3/RS in the garage alongside the latest F360 variant. However, if the choice is down to just one the Porsche ALWAYS wins hands down for its unique combination of performance, versitility, reliability, cost, and Yes - finally looks too. The only place it loses is in overall visual impact and depreciation. I have a colleague at work with a 360 Spider. When we have our cars together I call them the Beauty and the Beast. Beauty fades, but the Beast goes on and on devouring all the competition.

    Re: Looking for advice

    Crayphile,
Did I write anywhere that the car was less than 3 years old? My post title was "Looking for advice", not for a rant on beauty and the beast... and posing. Trust me buddy, I'll take anybody short of a full pro-driver on the track and give them a good run for their money so please back off on the poseur thing!
Having said that, I'm looking for advice.
    All the best

JMR - I think you've got the wrong end of the stick - no offence intended whatsever to you. You're not the poseur I was referring to, and I think the advice was clear - get the Porsche. Enjoy what ever you decide to get.
