    Re: G500 Test ride

Lars, seems its a G (live with the downsides) or a Range Rover Sport HSE (as you find SVR too hardcore)

Knowing you, I do not see many other options. The Q7 is one of the most boring albeit very good cars I have see.

Same for the Merc GLS or GLE. Nothing fancy about them.

I have no clue how the G keeps its value in Germany but you could always take the car offered to you and if you find that you definitely do not want to put up with it you could always trade it in at the dealer.

Your wife will be over the moon with it too.

    Re: G500 Test ride

If you don't need the third row maybe a simple Cayenne turbo or the real RR (not sport) make the most sense.

    Re: G500 Test ride

Maybe I should take a Tesla X and get my wife that G. Both are happy. For shorter family trips the Tesla will perfectly do the trick and for some long runs we could take the G. The G we could buy as a keeper as it always will stay cool and kind of valuable. And yes - it needs to be the V8 as it is a lifestyle car and it must have the right sound to it. And being honest, the V8 was not very fast, it was just ok. It shouldnt be any slower. Nevertheless, I will test ride the Diesel just to get a feeling for.

@intouch: no, I dont want that dealer car. If I buy one It must be the new one, just because of the changes to the suspensions.

And again... we dont need before Autumn winter, so time wise is enough time to get a car until then.

    Re: G500 Test ride

The Q7 is ''boring'' from the outside, but inside it is the most modern and best design of all the big SUV 's ....

I second that, especially at night the Q7 is very nice inside.

    Re: G500 Test ride

I think pretty much all of the pros and cons have been covered so i'll just add than, in my opinion, that has to be the coolest looking G I've ever seen. That color combo is way too cool. If your wife really wants it and you don't have to compromise too much for your usually driving habits I'd be the happiest guy alive having that baby in my garage.

    Re: G500 Test ride

Lars when new RR & RRS came out I test drove both and liked RR more, Main difference was confort, for the propose you´re buying your family car the RR has it all. Amazing confort, which, like you, I value a lot in a SUV. For me a SUV needs to be silent inside, V8 outside Smiley (a good V6 is fine too) have lots of confort and space, full equipped and looking glamorous inside and out, that´s what you get with a RR, Just yesterday I saw one passing by with 21" wheels carbon color with black roof and it looked amazing, with a stance few other cars from competition have. RRS looks wonderful too, but has less space and the suspension is "harsher" than RR.

Don´t take me wrong but GLS has the size of a BUS Smiley, to big and look so boring even with AMG kit.

    Re: G500 Test ride

    Isn't next year a new G-Class being introduced ?

    Re: G500 Test ride

@Gnil: I agree - the interior of the Audi rocks and the cockpit is the Industry coolest

@Enmanuel: Thanks mate - much appreciate your comment

@J.Seven: Last time I was tes driving that RR I still had my 750. Both been comparable in comfort. So yes, I think the RR might have it all. Unfortunately they will introduce a facelift next year. I don't like to buy a new car and having an old one half a year after (same actually is true for the RRS).

@Bjoern: Yep, there will be an all new G in 2017/2018. All new means, they expand the width. The fame stays pretty much the same as Mercedes wants to keep the advantages of the 1970 regulations. Nevertheless, this is one of the reasons where I am saying I should probably wait another 2 years before jumping on a G

    Re: G500 Test ride

i believe the original G will still hold its value when a new one is introduced as the car has a cult like following.

so far i have read nothing confirming that a new one will come out. it is still selling in good numbers for Mercedes.

my cousin just got a RR Supercharged Autobiography. Drove with him once. While very cool in terms of options and gizmos, a brief look around I discovered many issues were the finishing is a real let-down. car is a brand new 2016 model.

yes, facelifts are due for the range rover sport end of this year beginning of next year. SVR will get the new F-type SVR engine and while exterior modifications will be minimal, it is said that they will receive a major interior overhaul.

Get the G with the new 4.0 biturbo. It will suit you and your SLS indecision

hideous is all i can say. nevertheless, definitely the best one of the pack in terms of quality and performance.

    hehe... I'm almost convinced. Smiley

As I stated previously, we will need to make decision in Summer. The SRT is a lease and runs until December, but I think the G-Class is a car you can easily buy as you already know that it is A) easy to resell and B) holds its value better. The SRT was a different story, I was scared not being able to resell this american beast later on, so the lease gave me kind of the safety net getting rid of it sooner or later.

    Re: G500 Test ride

G 500 Hands down - not driven one yet - but those who have told me it's the best package.....- I personally love to own the G63 but I know I would be going mad very soon filling it up every couple of days - for those who have a SLS I would actually take the Diesel but turn it visually into a G63 but then I am not living in Germany where speeding fines are low...

    Re: G500 Test ride

In reality the G500 is not that much better in fuel economy than the G63. You might last a couple hrs more, that's about it laugh

I think the same. That beast took 27 liter/100km and we really been driving decent. Question is anyway why not taking a G63.

@Bjoern - believe it or not, but I read on some Forums that the Diesel is also taking up to 20 liter. So there is not really a huge difference and you still lack the sound and the power.

Of course cause they don't want to introduce an all new look. Which I think it will never happen.

    Re: G500 Test ride

    SciFrog:

Thanks for the write up. My interest for the G went from simple curiosity to zero. It is just too old technology and the trade offs for a somewhat cool are are way too big. Plus in a totally opposite way after my firsthand experience with the Tesla X, it is just cooler and practical...

In 5 years the X will be an old tech whereas the G will be forever young. 😁

    Re: G500 Test ride

Just a tip about getting a new RR. Drive it through a car wash before you sign the contract.

I know someone who bought a 2015 and in the first heavy rain,,,, water collected in the overhead dome lights and leaked all over inside. Maybe a year old one is a better way to go if they have massive depreciation in Germany like they do in the US.

Hi Jim - great tip! Just checked used cars and found some really great deals. Cars with less than 6 months and less than 8000km already depreciated 40%. There are even fully equipped cars on the market, not only "banana cars (cheap ones).

    Re: G500 Test ride

    @Lars, here's a RR Sport for you. I'm sure they'll give a great deal
