Does the lack of a spare in the 987 bother anybody

I never get really too excited about spare tires (or even talking about them), but I'm always glad I have one when I need it. What's the simplest solution if I want to carry one? Also, would a flat 19 in wheel/tire combo fit in the front trunk, or need I decide what's more valuable to carry -the wheel or my passenger -when I drive away??

Re: Does the lack of a spare in the 987 bother anybody

Yes, it bothers me. Thankfully I have a 986.

Re: Does the lack of a spare in the 987 bother anybody

When I had a puncture or two on my 986, I never bothered with fitting the spare anyway, mainly because of the problem of where to put the bigger wheel. One time I called road assistance and the other time I used a small compressor, I always carried in the car to inflate and it was enough to take me to a tyre shop.

Re: Does the lack of a spare in the 987 bother anybody

I've had one puncture in my old 986 and my current 987 - fortunately both were just screws/nails lodged in the tread. On both occasions i was able to either drive to my local tyre depot or inflate and then drive to the depot. On both occassions the tyre was repaired (one a simple plug repair on the 986) and the other a vulcanised repair on the 987 which meant buying a new tyre for use while the original was being repaired. Then ran both original rears til the they were worn; keeping one of the rears in case of a future puncture.

I wouldn't like to use the foam - from what i know its unreliable, and once used the tyre has to be discarded, so never any chance of a repair (i know Porsche won't sanction repairs, but then they have no control over the quality of them so i can understand their stance).

Carry a spare ? - the old 986 spare will just about fit if its deflated slightly, but there is no factory way to secure it, and it might be a problem fitting over the larger brake calipers of the S models (IIRC it is OK). YOu can also source a collapsable spare wheel like the ones used on older 911s and 944/928s. This will again fit in the front boot but needs securing.

Why bother ?? - well on average i guess i get one puncture every 10-12k miles; whilst i have the warranty and breakdown cover, and given the proximity of most of my driving to home, i can't see any point.

I did 1600 miles in one week on Scottish back roads a year ago - i was a bit nervous about punctures (especially on single track mountain and coastal passes), but had no issues. I alo had a couple of 986s in tow, so worst case i could have utilised their spare !!

Re: Does the lack of a spare in the 987 bother anybody

Two weeks ago I hit something in the road with my 987S and ended up with a decent sized hole in the tire. It was 7:00pm and in the middle of nowhere. I give all the credit to Porsche Roadside Assistance. They somehow located a flatbed who drove me 40 miles to the nearest Porsche dealer, contacted the dealer and had me in for service and a rental car the next morning and it didn't cost me a dime. Unfortunately, there were no tires in the area and had to wait an extra day unitil Tire Rack could overnight one. It could have been worse. Without Roadside Assistance I could have sat for days. I'd still rather have a spare and it would have cost Porsche less than the $300 tow.

this gives you an idea of an inflated 19" wheel - its about 4 inches higher than the bonnet line..

and this is a 19" on the passenger seat (and not the most stable of positions either !)

Re: Does the lack of a spare in the 987 bother any

Ha, that's hilarious. Though, perhaps not so hilarious if I find myself with a full cabin and a flat. Doh!

Anybody thought about carrying just a plug kit and an electric pump? Seems like almost all my flats have been puncture ones, usually caused by a nail somewhere. A slow leak coming from an otherwise inflated tire would probably provide just enough time to get me to the next Porsche dealer.

I dunno about the Boxster, but the 997 comes with an electric pump and a little bottle of "fix-a-flat" up in the front luggage compartment (behind the panel, with the toolkit).

Re: Does the lack of a spare in the 987 bother any

987, Cayman and 997 are the same - although there is an option for a spare wheel on the 997 but it occupies one of the rear seats - not easy in a 987 !

Re: Does the lack of a spare in the 987 bother any

Bugs me big time! Car is unreliable without a spare. Fit your car with a spare. Call the Porsche Roadside Assistance and have them bring just the flat to Porsche: if you can't fit it in car. Meanwhile drive home and _wait_ for the new tire to get shipped and received and mounted and ready to pick up.

Re: Does the lack of a spare in the 987 bother any

I do like this idea. Makes getting a flat tire less an issue about getting stranded!

I shall look for my electric pump then.

On the other hand, fix-a-flat is weak; it renders the tire unpatchable and is an absolute mess to clean -definitely an option of last resort!

To answer your original question. No it doesn't bother me.

The roads must be very bad in the US, as I cannot recall having a flat (this decade/century) here in old Europe.
Do they pave them with nails or something?

(I go away now to search for a rabbit's foot as Murphy's Law may come into effect now)

    Yes

Re: Does the lack of a spare in the 987 bother any

Travelling thru europe again this year i will be carrying the 17" inflated spare from a 996/ 986 in the front lugage compartment. It still allows for luggage and will fit over the front brake calipers on a 987S. I have devised a plan to carry the removed wheel on the rear trunk cover , secured by strapping and protecting the paintwork using a pre cut rubber mat. With a max speed of 80kmph the wheel is suitably secured until a tyre repair facility can be found. Bear in mind that the 19" tyres are in short supply and it makes sense to try to preserve the tyre and repair rather than filling it with glue and discarding it.
