    RC, why all the hype about the "sport button"?

    Just wanted to make sure I had the information right on what the sport button really does. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that all it does is make the throttle pedal more sensitive, while NOT changing the torque curve or raising max power. In other words, full throttle with either SPORT "on" or "off" will be exactly the same. This is the same feature that comes standard on all BMW M3's. Unless the standard throttle mapping is REALLY sluggish, I don't really see any real PERFORMANCE benefit. Great around town to make you feel like you have a more powerful car though.

    A number of adjustments are made in Motronic when the Sport function is activated.
    * Accelerator pedal characteristics
    * High-speed cut-off
    * Dash pot (load change damping) [This means that the throttle closes faster when released. The result is a heightened, "racing-like" engine dynamic. ]
    * PSM (Porsche Stability Management)
    * PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management
    The electronic throttle characteristicis switched to a steeper setting. This produces a faster throttle response to accelerator pedal movements to subjectively increase the spontaneity of the engine.
    The Sport Chrono function facilitates additional acceleration potential through the use of an abrupt high-speed cut-off by switching off individual cylinders (injection and ignition) in a rotating fashion just shortly before the speed limit. The perceptible limit of acceleration lets the driver know if an upshift is executed too late. This allows the driver to learn how to identify the optimum shift point with more accuracy and use the full potential of the engine for acceleration.
    When the Sport Chrono button is pressed, the abrupt cut-off is active in 1st to 5th gears for the manual gearbox (without Sport Chrono function only in 1st and 2nd gears)

    Sport mode allows the extreme driver to deliberately direct PSM interventions away from driving stability and more towards agility and driving dynamics, without having to sacrifice PSM support in emergency situations.

    Might be a ignorant question but does the sport mode result in higher gas consumption (lower gas mileage)?

    Probably yes, the gas consumption will get higher but not only because the way the system works but also because the driver will not resist the temptation

    Side note: for inexperienced drivers (and I mean inexperienced with the 997 setup, RWD and rear axle engine), the sport settings will increase the overall "sensitivity" of the car (mainly the throttle), so it will make "on the edge driving" even more dangerous. For those I would say better don't buy it.

    like a gimmick: switching it into sport mode will blow your friends' minds for five minutes when you let him drive your car for the first time.

    If it is different from the M3; I don;t know what I'm talking about.

    Oh, if you track the car maybe there're good reasons to have it.

    I got an 04 M3.

    Guys,

    I have also difficulties to justify this function. The only two things that seem important to me are

    - the accerator pedal characteristics

    - different PSM settings for even more dynamic driving without interference by the stability management

    The first doesn't change that much in my eyes and are rather a gimmick - if you get used to a senseful throttle characteristic there shouldn't be the need to change it for certain reasons.

    Alain Prost commented on that issue in F1 once and in his opinion hp delivery should be proportional to acc. pedal position.

    The PSM setting change might be an interesting issue, but I could live without it since it kicks in during hard braking even if it is switched of via the button!

    Anyways, I could live without it and would like to know other people's opinions!

    yeah, it's a good car. Good for rural highways where there's dozens of slow, blind, sleeping drivers and where ther's not an abundance of passing zones. The M3 gets you around and in front of a that really "nicely;" though I haven't made any friends doing it.

    Mine's real tough looking, stock wheels, a few scratches and dents already, all business, not always sparking clean on the outside. A real efficient _German_ piece of get-me-there.

    When I get the 997, I'll probably keep it clean all the time and not drive it as much for necessity as the M3.

    i've got an 04 M3 as well, the sport button on the M3 is much less, it only does 2 things:

    1. increase throttle response at a BIG expense of fuel consumption

    2. allow use of launch control ( )

    is your car SMG2?

    I've drivn the 997 CarreraS with the Sport button. It really changes the character of the car. I liked it, but I guess it is subjective. For me the Sports Chrono Packages is a must.

    Maybe the "non-believers" should do the following:
    drive for an hour with the sport button pressed.
    Then, turn it off and you'll be surprised.

    Yesterday I had the chance to get 10 minutes alone on a near-by safety training ground. I finally succeeded to let the 997 drift, of course with the sport button pressed and it was so much fun to see what is possible with PSM turned on. I didn't have the time to try this with PSM turned off because another car was entering and I had an agreement to stop my "games" as soon as another car appears but it was impressive. The 997 is very easy controllable when the rear slides away but the sticky Michelin tires don't make it easy to do a long slide.
