That’s because you’re trying to “compare” it to Stefan Bellof’s record.
Porsche is simply showing what is currently doable with a modern race car on a modernized Ring (just like they did in SPA). Nothing more and nothing less.

That’s because you’re trying to “compare” it to Stefan Bellof’s record.
Porsche is simply showing what is currently doable with a modern race car on a modernized Ring (just like they did in SPA). Nothing more and nothing less.
Yes, Bellof's time was a great achievement. Both his qualifying time and his fastest lap of that race 35 years ago.

The lap time was 0.783 seconds faster than Lewis Hamilton's flying qualification lap in 2017, previously posting a 1:42.553 in his Mercedes AMG F1 W08, a Formula One car. Jani was also over 12 seconds faster than the standard 919 Hybrid's 2017 pole position lap time of 1:54.097. During the lap, Jani's speed trap was 359 km/h (223.1 mph) at the Kemmel Straight, with an average speed of 245.61 km/h (152.6 mph).
The V4 engine is retained for the Evo, putting out 720 hp (537 kW; 730 PS) without fuel flow restrictions. Without class restrictions the output of the electric motors was increased from 400 hp to 440 hp (328 kW; 446 PS) and the amount of recovered energy that could be used was increased from regulated 6.37 megajoule for Spa to 8.49 megajoule. The car's weight was reduced by 39 kg, now weighing in at 849 kg (1,872 lb) dry and 888 kg (1,958 lb) with driver ballast. Extensive aerodynamic upgrades were also added to the 919 Evo, resulting in a 53% increase in downforce and 66% increase in aerodynamic efficiency compared to 2017 WEC Spa qualifying spec.
The 919 Evo will be doing demo runs through 2018 as part of the "919 Tribute Tour" at the Nürburgring Nordschleife for the 24 Hours Nürburgring, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, for the Festival of Porsche at Brands Hatch and at Laguna Seca as part of Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI.
On 29th of June 2018 Porsche ran the 919 Evo on the Nurburgring and Timo Bernhard put down a time of 5m19 seconds breaking the long held record of 6m11 seconds by Stephan Bellof.

P.S. Timo Bernhard and Jani must be congratulated. F1 drivers get all the glory but IMO sportscar drivers especially endurance/long distance racers are real heroes.

That on board lap is insane... the speed it carries in the corners, how it tractions out of corners, how it shaves off speed into the corners, and how fast the speed climbs even in 6-7 gear is amazing 
... and the driver just as amazing...

Here one can see Porsche's strategy for hybrid power helping.
They use it for exiting corners, instead of pulling for a higher top speed like other manufacturers.
One gain more time on the corner exits than going faster in a straight line.
Same philosophy as in the 918, the hybrid power is for 'low' speed helping.
One reason why the 918 is that much faster than a LaFerrari or a P1 one any circuits.

On top of you unfortunately getting sick it rained so much that they cancelled part of the training. Money well spent

Kind of surreal In the fast corners this thing is 80-90 km/h faster than a GT3 - this is (for me) beyond imagination. Timo's brain must be wired diferently.... when I go for some laps with a good friend and Ring buddy he always uses to say: "be always aware that you can't fuck physics" 
Well, it seems this is not true anymore if you have the right budget, tons of know-how and tech experience plus a driver like Timo

"Bernhard breaks Bellof's Nürburgring record in Porsche 919"
Timo Bernhard has lapped the Nürburgring in 5min 19.546sec, breaking Bellof's record. And Dickie Meaden was on hand to see it...
And just like that it was done. After 35 years the greatest lap record of them all was broken. Not just by a little, but by a quantum that beggars belief.
In truth it was smashed at the first attempt, a 5min 31sec straight out of the box. “That’s already pretty tasty”, said 919 chief engineer, Stephen Mitas, as Timo crossed the line. “And he’s not even warmed up yet...”
If all goes to plan it was always going to be thus – the assured expressions worn by the team on the eve of the attempt told us this much – but by how much?
The 919 Evo project is something only Porsche would do: take the fastest sports prototype of them all and make it MUCH faster. Not to race. Just to prove a point.
Faster than a contemporary F1 car around Spa, and now the fastest of them all around the Nordschleife.
Speaking to Timo Bernhard the night before the Nürburgring record attempt you’d never guess he was poised to make history. But the scale of the challenge was clear. “This place is different. The margins are so small and the consequences so great you simply can’t attack the lap in a car like this as you would at somewhere like Spa. I have to stay away from the kerbs, so the line is slightly different. If I can make a clean lap we will have the record, but by how much I don’t know. The section from Hohe Acht through to Pflanzgarten 2 will be the biggest challenge. The speed is huge and there’s only one line.” A fine line at that.
The Gods are smiling on Nürburg as the team makes its final preparations. The sun is shining, the track pristine. The install lap is made at 8am, the first attempt shortly after 8.30. Then a second run comes at 9.00. Will it be under 5min 25sec? Might it be 5min 11sec? Could it even be sub-5?
From off-the-record conversations we know the team has aspirations for a full minute under Bellof’s race lap record, but only Bernhard knows for sure how quick he can go. In this age of simulation, prediction and telemetry that’s refreshingly old-school. It’s something Bellof would surely have relished.
When the moment comes its both epic and quietly emotional. Knowing smiles between team-mates. Hugs and handshakes. And then, when Bernhard returns, cheers and applause. Some felt it was a record that should be preserved, that to break it would be to somehow betray Bellof’s memory. I disagree.
Presented with the fastest racing car the world has ever seen would Bellof have hesitated? Not for a second. And nor did Bernhard.
Congratulations Porsche. Congratulations Timo.
You’ve honoured the man and his legacy in the best way possible with 5min 19.546sec of pure magic.
