    Hybridisation will improve a lot.

    We are at the beginning.

True but hybridization will also make cars heavier... Smiley

And that is the rightful sacrifice to keep a V12 over a tiny 2L 4-banger in a Ferrari.

Sometimes the weight question is quite overblown. I drove the Cup car and the GT3RS back to back, I certainly didn't noticed the weight difference. Well perhaps during braking where the Cup car stops a lot faster. But then again the heavier still 918 stops quicker than the lighter GT3RS when I drove them back to back on Paul Ricard.

When a car has enough power, even the acceleration between a light and heavy car is wiped clean. This morning I went for a morning drive with local PCA. I was in the 918, a very much lighter GT4 was behind me, it disappeared into a tiny dot very very quicker on the straights.

    Re: AMG GT Thread Closed

Weight isn't a big deal on road cars and normal roads. You don't care about tire or brake wear on a roadcar, or how fuel efficient it is, and you'll rarely be taking corners in the real world at speeds where you think, "Man, I wish this car was lighter."

I wouldn't be surprised if the best race car you can make is not the lightest one.

Can you even get a modern 911 down to 900kg while maintaining all the best technology and engineering?

Well if it's not modern, there is a good chance the technology will compensate for more than the additional weight.

It happens all the time in road cars. A heavier and lower powered 991 GT3 is probably quicker than an Enzo.

If you have a 900 kg 911 for me to borrow, I'd be glad to test it and give you my feedback vs a modern exotic. :)

I prefer to try to avoid accidents Smiley  In all seriousness, I do have a 3/4 cage and 6-point harnesses, and a fuel cell.  These things help, but there is no getting around the fact that the newer cars are safer.

I probably wouldn't consider driving in Germany with a car this old (Autobahn speeds are not suitable) and Nurburgring is not the right track for this car either.  But with low speeds on US roads and highways and my local track which is relatively slow (with almost no walls and wide run-off areas), I think the risks are managed to the acceptable level.

For the same money you can get a modern track Porsche. And hey - that modern car will be much faster!

Never got that hype for young-timers. Everything which is build after 1965 is not a real vintage car and you can right away grab a new one instead IMO.

    Re: AMG GT Thread Closed

Had two friends with modded 964 RS over 15 years ago (one crashed his car, never heard of him again and the other one sold it, so we lost contact) and I loved them. These cars were sooooo fast and so much fun to drive, one was modded to over 500 hp (turbo charged...) and the chassis setup was amazing as well.

    Memories...

Feeling exactly the same way. One of my first track experiences was in a 964 Cup. Now with some more serious racing experience I would love to try such a car once more. As I remember it, the car was very light and agile, as well as I remember plenty of torque. The fact is that I would never pay the money people are asking these days.

Got offered a 964 RS with around 35k km for around 60k EUR (not so sure about the exact numbers but in this range) at some point and considered it to be too expensive. Smiley
