    2009 Porsche Motorsport

Anyone have know if and when Porsche will start racing as a facory team in both the U.S and in Europe? If anyone hear have any inside info on there racing plans for 2009 season it would be great if you shared. I just hope they start racing again as a factory team instead of having someone else running there cars. Also anyone know if Porsche plans on racing the RS Spyder in 2009 and if t will be a new version of the spyder or maybe LMP1? Also I hope they enter GT1. I am a Porsche motorsport fanatic!!!! I still cant believe they lost at the ALMS race in Long Beach.

    Re: 2009 Porsche Motorsport

As you may know, the contract between Penske and Porsche for the development and racing of the RS Spyder will terminate at the end of 2008.
No one knows what Porsche's next steps will be.
As you may also know, there are new LMP1 rules due out for 2010.
In a recent interview that Hartmut Kristen gave the Italian magazine Sportsprint, he says that Porsche are looking at developing a P1 program. They are appraising the situation but no decisions have been made yet.
I was also watching a program the other day, called DRIVE which was focusing on the L.A. car show.
Whilst covering the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid, the presenter said that Porsche are so pleased with their work on the prototype that they are lobbying the ACO to allow hybrids into the 24 h Le Mans.

I personally think that 2009 will be a transition year (for Porsche and sportscar racing in general)
We will see a continuation of the GT2 program.
We will most likely see Penske (and Dyson) continue to race the Spyders , but with only Porsche "back door" support.

The future hinges around the new LMP rule.
Lets hope the ACO get it right this time!

    Re: 2009 Porsche Motorsport

With the new rules, LMP2 will also be pushing out the factories in favor of privateer teams. Both Porsche and Acura have stated that their LMP2 programmes are their ways of putting their toes in the water before they jump in to LMP1.

With that said, I don't think I would refer to the Penske programme as back door support. Porsche has several engineers (Porsche employees) working at Penske on the car. It is very much a Porsche/Penske operation combined.

Of course Porsche will continue in GT2 with their customer programme but I don't see them jumping into GT1 anytime soon. If anything, the current trend is away from GT1 and down towards GT3 levels. I would expect that spiralling costs and in the case of the ALMS, sparse participation will see GT1 killed for the future in favor of GT2 being the top for production based cars with a GT3 type class brought in essentially shifting the GT1/GT2 classes to a GT2/GT3 arrangement.

Actually, Porsche has never said this openly.
They have always stated that the RS Spyder program was solely a LMP2 program commissioned by PNA
They have , however, always left the door open to a move to LMP1

I did not refer to the Penske team as currently receiving back door support. I said they would probably carry on (after the contract) with back door support.

    Agreed.

I'll have to dig for it but I recall an older interview with a PMNA higher up stating that the LMP2 programme was a test bed for a full LMP1 programme. It's old and of course, times change, especially with the significant purchase of VW and with that, their would be rival in LMP1, Audi, now being a subsidiary, the LMP1 programme may be well and gone.

You're right, I need to work on my reading comprehension.
