Maybe BMW wants to promote the new X7 to a design icon and the X5 stays more "down to earth", design-wise?
Not a fan of the new X5 I have to say, most people won't even recognize a new car here, especially not from the front.
Or to use my favorite word when it comes to BMW: Boring.

Carlos from Spain:The front kind of reminds me of someone who has been stung by a bee in the nose and lips ... as to the rest, boring.
Also, in the rear, it looks like a Jeep Grand Cherokee now.

Only Porsche seems to be able to make the same car for 50 years, while others need to innovate and get creative with their designs. It looks fine to me, neither overly exciting or dull, but a definite modernization over the previous generation. The downside to mass market auto makers is that their designs need to appeal to a broad range of buyers, so the entry level model will look very similar to the M, which the real disappointment for me, and all manufacturers are guilty of it.

EVO says the new one is 66mm wider than the current one. My car park is less than 20 years old, even with the current model it is not easy to get into (by lift). With the new version it is nearly impossible even with folded mirrors.
In my garage my neighbour has big car too. We both have to park our car on the outermost edge of our slot so that we can exit the car. With a 66mm wider car it will be impossible.
BMW dealer told me that they already lost customers because they can’t use the car park at the Munich Opera. Is it really necessary to enlarge any next generation? Or is good old Europe not interesting anymore?
I have to cancel my order and need a new solution.

I had to park my X5 M in a closed garage in the vicinity, one of these box garages for single cars. I almost scraped the wall with the X5 while entering it, barely got out. Oh boy was that close, should have checked on the width before I started to enter the garage. Never again. These garages and often parking lots as well in Germany are build for small hatchbacks not SUVs. Same issue with the E63S in Italy, was a pain in the ass to maneuver through a parking lot in a small city. Without air suspension and the ability to raise the car, I would have been stuck.

BMW sold over 100,000 X5s in the US and China last year, while only 30,000 or so in Europe.

Carlos from Spain:What in the world makes you think Tesla is setting any type of leading trend regarding interiors? Nobody is following or cares about Tesla interiors...
When I first sat in the Tesla S, I was so fascinated of the big iPad style display. Now I think it is annoying and not the best solution. Try to use touch displays for everything in a moving car. Good luck.

Why are you in the defensive? Just merely stating they are going in opposite direction, it is a fact and not even an endorsement in this particular post. Your attitude reflects a lot of what some Europeans here are doing, it is almost like you are afraid of the changes and your world is being torn apart by other people doing it different. This retrograde attitude (and a few other ones) are why I am never planning to move back to Europe.

You live in a different world the most people living in the USA do. I don't even remember the last time i drove above 140kph... You take autobahn curves at speed where you tire pressure matters for your life... Two very different worlds, one made of millions, the other of a few thousand people...

Perhaps I should of used a smiley but I wasn't being defensive at all, I was more like amused at the Tesla comment in this thread, kind of like if someone on the watch thread criticizes Rolex's latest collection because its the opposite of what Casio is doing with their digital watches
As to your other comment, have no clue were you are getting that from, its funny how the mind will draw conclusions and assumption from thin air to believe what it wants to believe.

A smiley might not have changed your (and others) general defensive attitude vs Tesla’s innovations.
Thin air being the fact that I am 100% french with no other nationality, all my family is in France, Italy and Switzerland, many of my friends are in France, UK and Switzerland and that I talk daily with a very active entrepreneur french people community and often with french government and education in the USA . These are not assumptions, they are facts confirmed by my first hand experience over the last 25 years.

Unfortunately the brain believes what it wants to believe so even if you think you have access to the information you will just take and interpret it to fit your perspective.
You could say I'm half american, and I actually "live" here and all I could tell you is that when I read your posts on Europe, your impressions of Europe are no different than someone in the Us who never even lived in Europe, same mentality. Europe has its problems believe me ... but all I'm saying is that there are not precisely those that you think they are.

Well put This might be applicable for many other topics discussed in here...
Though it looks rather generic, it seems to be a polarising design.
I don't like it at all, the design direction BMW is heading to isn't after my fancy, I like the last iteration much more. Same goes for Audi by the way. I had a look in the brandnew SQ5 for example, for me this is a step backwards.

Indeed, its human nature, it applies to all of us, we cannot escape cognitive biases, we can only reduce them by a small extent if we try to be aware of them, but we are all guilty! Free will a myth
