    997 heights

The height of the car is important to me, firstly because the lower, the better looking but also because, it usually goes with a sport setting (and hence better handling).
Now the standard 997 Carrera is 131 cm (which makes it slightly higher than the standard 996 BTW)
    With PASM, it's 130 cm (997S then)
Porsche says that the sport suspension lowers the car by 20 mm, is that compared to the PASM option or the standard option?
If it's the latter, which I think it is, that would mean, that the car is still 129 cm high. Which is just 5 mm lower than the standard 996 in fact.
996 with 30 mm sport suspension had the same height as the GT3 ie. 127.5 cm and you could really see it.
I find 129 cm high for the sportiest setting a tad disappointing.
I know I'm picky, but to me, part of what makes the GT3 so good looking is the fact it seats so low.

    Re: 997 heights

Indeed, I've seen the 997 and 997S live and there is a little 'SUV' feeling about them. I would like them lower..

    Re: 997 heights

I'm glad I'm not the only one.
The 997 just looks plain clumsy, the wheels arches are so big compared to the wheels, that on pics, they look 16 in
I haven't seen the car yet in person yet though, so I'll keep my final judgement till that day.
I think the GT3 will be at least 10 mm lower than the 997S with sport suspension, now whether or not Porsche will offer an even lower settings on the S than the sport suspension, I doubt.

    Re: 997 heights

Reine, I wouldn't go as far as SUV though!

    Re: 997 heights

Looks worse in pictures though, much better in person.

    Re: 997 heights

    Fanch I'm not followng you.

You say that the 996 with 30 mm sports suspension is 127.5 (like the GT3). That implies that the standard 996 is 130.5, right? But you say that the 997S 20mm sports suspension is 129. Then the difference between the two is 15mm rather than 5mm. Am I missing something?

    Re: 997 heights

    Fanch,
I believe the -20mm supension is in refference to the standard suspension sinc the PASM is also know as the -10mm (which is in ref to the standard) and also both suspensions are not exclusive of the 997S, they can be fitted to the base 997 as well.

    So that makes:
    - 997 (std)= 131cm,
    - 997S (PASM) = 130cm,
    - 997S (-20mm) = 129cm,
    - 996 C2 (std) = 130.5cm
    - 996 C2 (RoWM030M) = 129cm aprox

So that would mean that the 996 GT3 which has a std -30mm would be = 127.5cm, no? And thats exactly 1.5cm inch lower than a 997S with the -20mm!

However I can tell you that in real life its not going to look higher due to the effect of the wider looking stance and shape of the rear, and doesn't look high "in real life", even the PASM

    Re: 997 heights

    Unfortunately I saw it yesterday.

It was a solid black unit; a standard 997 Carrera that is. It was parked besides a 996 Carrera 4S, which, in comparison looked far lower, far more agressive, far more predator, being the 997 a bit friendly-looking.

Just aesthetics, though. Why are they so important?. Looking both faces I decided not to move because of the looks, as I consider much more satisfying my 996 Carrera 4S than this 997.

To remain on topic, the 997 seemed so high, so much a GT coupé instead of a sports car as it used to be. sigh!

    Re: 997 heights

I don't think a wide body 996 with RoW lowered sport supension is a good reference for comparison in height apperance with a standard and narrowbody 997. As a matter of fact, neither in driving satisfaction, I would take a -20mm 977"S" for a spin before coming to that conclusion. But I do agree in the happy face non-aggressive front on the 997

    Re: 997 heights

    Hi,

here are two pics were you can see the -20mm suspension.I think the height is o.k not to low and not to high, iwould say a must have. After a while the car settled a bit down.

19" BBS Le Mans or Cargraphic and the car looks perfect.

    Re: 997 heights

    2nd

    Re: 997 heights

Black cars looks lower as they don't show the gap between the wheels and body as easy as lighter colours..

(Excuse my bad English, hope everyone understands what I'm writing.)

    Very Nice car though

Are you kidding? The 997 Carrera S at my dealer (and he has two cars) seems to be at the same height level as the GT3 on display, maybe slightly higher but definetely not SUV-like.
C'mon the 911 is no lowered aftermarket BMW 3-series, rice burner or VW Golf GTi with 50 mm lowering springs.

    Re: 997 heights

Francois, I think there is a misunderstanding: PASM on the 997 is not the same PASM as on the Cayenne.
The 997 PASM does not lower the car, it just changes damper settings/stiffness.

People ordering PASM should be aware of one thing: if they ever plan to seriously track race the car or just modify the suspension, there is no possibility to do that.
Once you go PASM, there is no turning back. But PASM also has it's advantages, especially for people who don't want it stiff and sporty all the time.
The 20 mm lowering of the sport suspension is, to my knowledge, compared to the standard height. PASM already seems to lower the 997 by 10 mm. I hope this helps.

    Re: 997 heights

No you're not, I'm just sh... at math!!!
RC, I know that PASM does not modulate ride height, I was just writing that, as you rightly pointed out, it seats 10 mm lower than the standard Carrera.

    Re: 997 heights

I agree, but it's a little to high, higher than I expected. For the record, I'm not into 'lowered rice aftermarket kits'. I always leave my car as it was bought..

    Re: 997 heights

Guys, I don't understand your problems.

The ground clearance would be the only reason NOT to buy the -20 sport suspension, if it'd turn out to be set to low.

I've seen 997 and 997S in black / silver in person and I cannot find reasons to complain about its appereance.

Actually its "friendly" looks are one of the great aspects of a Porsche - its "social friendliness" is something no Ferrari or AstonMartin has!

    Re: 997 heights

I agree again. I probably have a different opinion about height after my test-drive next week..

Height is fine, just not as low as I expected.

    //RT

    Re: 997 heights

    997 Ground Clearance= 4.2in/106mm

    997S Ground Clearance= 3.8in/96mm
    -10mm
    .393700787 in
Could you see this at 20 ft?, more than likely not

    -20mm=
    .787401574 in
We won't be seeing this in the USA

    Re: 997 heights

Same here. Once again, I'm talking through my a... right now because I still haven't seen the lady in person.
It was just a general statement about cars in general.
And not about ground clearance but about car height.
I saw a 996 Turbo X74 not too long ago and you'd be surprised to see how 20 mm make a big difference! The car looked great!

    Re: 997 heights

Can someone please summarize the height figures again for each 997 variant. I'm a little confused. RC said PASM doesn't lower the vehicle, then he said it's lowered by 10cm...?

    Re: 997 heights

PASM car seats 10 mm lower than the standard one, just like 030 used to compared to standard 996.
But unlike the Cayenne, you can't change the ride height.

    Re: 997 heights

yes rc is right ,its lowered by 10mm compared to standard 997 (without pasm) .at the end this is the chart:
    997 (no pasm): 1310mm
    997s : 1300mm
    997 with sport suspension: 1290mm
    996 tt: :1295mm
i would have definetly gone to sport suspension because it give a very agressive look ,but i tried it,its veeeerrrrryyy stiff, definetly not for everyday user like me

    Re: 997 heights

When I was at my dealer I saw a 997 with standard suspension and 18" wheels and a 997S with Sports suspension -20mm and 19" wheels. Both cars were black.

The 997S looked great. The standard 997 didn't fill the wheel arches at all. In my opinion 18" wheels and standard suspension are not a good combination in that respect.

Is the outer tire size between 19" and 18" different? I was under the impression that the difference was the sidewall thickness. If that is so, a standard 997 with 19" would not fill the wheel arches also, or is it the fact that the 19" wheels are wider that makes them fill the wheel arches on a standard suspension car?

You are correct, the outer tire size is the same with 18" and 19" wheels, but since the color of the tire sidewall (black) is similar to the color of the space between the tire and the arch (dark) the visual effect is that the wheels don't fill the arches. In other words, with the 18" wheels, the size of the wheel (excluding tire) is small compared to the arches.

    Re: 997 heights

Don't forget that 19" wheel 997S had the -20mm suspension, thats 2cm of wheel arch space less right there also.

    Re: 997 heights

A theoritical calculation shows however a slightly higher tire diameter for the 18" rear (669 mm) vs the 19" rear (659 mm).
On the other hand front tires would be very close, 645 mm for the 18" and 647 mm for the 19".
