    E92BMW M3 WITH SOFT TOP?

Hi there! I know that BMW has now on the convertible models the hard top. A friend of mine that has an E46 M3 convertible told me that they were planning to have a new cab with a soft top as an option. We are of course speaking about the E92 model.

    Any ideas?

    Best Florent.

Re: E92BMW M3 WITH SOFT TOP?

That would be fantastic for the car's weight and center of gravity, but will BMW do it? Hmmm.....

I don't think people who buy cabriolets are as serious about acceleration, handling, steering feel, and cowl shake.

Audi even uses a softer spring rate on the TT Roadster compared with the Coupe.

    Perhaps "M" buyers are different?

Re: E92BMW M3 WITH SOFT TOP?

Seems about right to me. Why not?

Maybe, according to the marketing dept, a cab would make the coupe's CF roof innovation seem silly?

_Eventually_ there will have to be a cab though. Gets more sales that way.

Re: E92BMW M3 WITH SOFT TOP?

it doesnt make sense.... Why would they offer both a hard top convertible and canvas top? Its one or the other. Like the new 1 series convertible, they only come in canvas tops and not the folding hard top.

Re: E92BMW M3 WITH SOFT TOP?

That rumor has been around for a while... but I don't think it has legs.

The only manufacturer that does that is hardly known for the quality of its products, not to mention its profit-making ability.

(which manufacturer? Chrysler, which sells the Sebring with both options)

Mazda sells the MX-5 in both versions as well.

Re: E92BMW M3 WITH SOFT TOP?

    Damned!

Well, it's a Ford brand, so it kinda works too...

First of all, the 3-series cab is the E93

Second, why would they spend alot of money on developing and producing a soft-top for the E93 when they have one of the best hard-tops on the market? How many customers are willing to sacrifice the benefits of a hard-top for a loss of weight and added performance?

There were some rumors that the E93 M3 would have a soft-top, but as we can see it hasn't, and all those rumors are at least a year old.

So my conclusion - not gonna happen.

Re: E92BMW M3 WITH SOFT TOP?

Haven't we already seen pics of the new M3 cabrio when thre was talk of BMWs new DSG?
Those oficial pics when they presented it?

Re: E92BMW M3 WITH SOFT TOP?

    thank you guys!!!!!

Re: E92BMW M3 WITH SOFT TOP?

Hard top keeps the coupe profile, looks great. People that buy cabs don't care about weight savings/pure performance...

... because cabs have much lower structural rigidity amongst other performance shortcomings compared to a coupe.

Every time a client brought a cab to the track I would laugh...

Re: E92BMW M3 WITH SOFT TOP?

This we are going to see.

The Cabrio has not the sales figures to have a second different cabrio in line. The hard-top car has a complete different structure and frame. So it would neeed a complete new car. Development costs are just to high to adress this for a small amount of people looking for a soft-top.

Might it be that the rumours are because of the 1series convertible?

Re: E92BMW M3 WITH SOFT TOP?

    aaaahhhh. TYPO

Wanted to say This we are NOT going to see!

*damn board... my edit doesnt work*

Re: E92BMW M3 WITH SOFT TOP?

Nobody really wants a soft top anymore... the original poster claims they want a soft top to reduce weight and lower centre of gravity?

Why worry about those issues when EVERY cabriolet car will have a large defeceit when it comes to structural rigidity.

A hard top is actually a decent compromise because it is more structurally sound than a soft top. Less bracing may be needed so the weight would be rather similar of having a aluminum hardtop versus a canvas soft-top with all the structural bracing.

The whole concept of a performance oriented convertible car is an oxy-moron...

You want a convertable, you probably want to pose and waft around, yet desire to claim the cars performance potential in a heated debate with other poseurs.

You want a coupe? you hopefully have no interest in the above and want performance.

Sorry, you can't have it both ways.

Why? If that's the only car they have and they can still have fun with it, what's the problem? The aim isn't to get the best lap times possible, but to have fun.

Re: E92BMW M3 WITH SOFT TOP?

    SLR Roadster?

CGT is a targa top, the carbon tub's rigidity is not compromised by the removal of the roof panels. It was designed this way and is thus excused.

I think the SLR is a monstrosity. besides the fact that it is only available with a prehistoric torque converter automatic gearbox... what other hints do you need that it is just a boulevard cruiser. Less than a handful of the already limited production of those cars will be driven at the limit.

At the end of the day, the point I am trying to make is that people buying convertibiles are clearly prioritizing their need to pose over the need for pure performance, otherwise they'd have purchased the coupe.

So for them to then come around and complain that convertibles performance are lesser than the coupes /etc/etc/etc ... its all a bit like wanting to have you cake and eat it too.

    +1

bringing a car to the track is just to have fun... So what if a cab is slower than a coupe for the occasional track day you would do a year?

FYI serious track guys have a dedicated track car...

Wrong , most people buy convertibles because they enjoy driving a open car.
You can "pose" in a coupe equally well if you want to. Just roll down the windows and put on some load music and there you go.
The first Porsche was a convertible btw. Clearly Mr. Porsche was not a "poser"
