They ALSO can afford to LOSE money on it, sell it for a very low price. It's probably _market_warfare_ to erode confidence in Porsche.

Porsche deserves to lose a few customers when a mildly well equipped Cayman S costs as much as a fully-loaded GT-R. I hope this prods Porsche to up the ante a bit with the go-fast parts (motors, LSD, etc.)

I doubt that Nissan intends to lose money on the GT-R, but its MSRP likely represents only a modest profit margin on the tech investment, much like Audi is doing with the R8. What its price does emphasize is how much profit margin Porsche gets from every 911 sale (even before we add all the leather-coated nuts and bolts).

But it is obvious that Nissan knew exactly what it was doing in designing this car, both in style and performance - it is a grenade lobbed into the performance car world to stir things up, and the discussion here proves it.

    Re: Nissan and Ferrari

These "corporate blokes" can be quite arrogant and stubborn (I know because I once was one of them), especially when the company they are running is making a good profit.
My fear is the Porsche will only start to really listen when it begins to hit them (hard) in the pocket book.

It is a Japanese Porsche but with lower costs, better technology and refreshingly new. Not the same old, same old with incremental change.

Well I completely agree that the new r-35 GT-r is a Japanese version of the 997 TT, but we have to be more careful when we talk about technology. The 997 TT model is a unique car in its kind. If you analyze the engineering you will understand that this car will never be raw. Have a look at the variable geometry turbines and you'll see what I mean!!! P-engineers have really done an excellent job. Also one more thing. Can you imagine this r-35 GT-R after ten years time and a 997 TT after ten years time? Compare their prices again. That's why a 997 TT cannot be compared in terms of technology, depreciation and performance.

European fast cars each have their own personality. A Porsche a Ferrari a Lambo or an Aston Martin or an AMG fulfill different roles and appeal to different clientele. A Porsche fan may jump to any of the brands above and vice versa because his or hers taste change over time or the socio-economic status changes.
The Japanese often come up with very good products that imitate a variety of characteristics and often improve on them. These products appeal to a different type of buyers IMO at least in the European market. The rally derived Evos and Subarus like the GTR are excellent driving machines but very few people will choose one over any of the European brands above. Even if they are tempted to try it will be for a short time and not something that lasts. A serious issue I believe is the aesthetics of such cars, inside and outside, that are very Asian and are not suited to what the European eye considers as appealing. How many people in Europe for example would find a Sumo wrestler sexy? As many as would find the GT-R beautiful, perhaps. They might try once or twice for the experience but they will not stay for long.

    reginos, I couldn't agree more!!

    Re: Nissan GTR

Driving home the other night pulled up on a 300/350Z & couldnt believe how much the GTR looks like the Z from the front & side. Not size wise but styling.

Do you like the look of the Z? I think it is very sporty looking and like it. If anything its similiarity to the Z is a plus.
