Congrats RC. I was skeptical on the color you chose but it does make the car look really mean and special.

Hope you enjoy it and don't regret it after a few months but I doubt it.

Congrats RC kiss Looks really good, great color choice. Enjoy it in good health.

I really appreciate your Reviews, they are really good written and always an interesting read with a lot of details. I would read any review you write. Thank you for your thoughts.

How would you compare it to the GLC 63S? If I remember correctly you driven one but I didn't seen a review of it.

Perhaps it does, but it will be infinitely more stable than the SUVs he was considered before.   One is glad that some have rejected the SUV/crossover craze.

    Re: Mercedes E63 S AMG Edition 1 (2018) - Short Review (incomplete)

Who is buying a +5m sport sedan to have an spirited drive through some twisties on sunday? They were concibed for people with family needs who didn't want to lose the sporty feeling performance wise, just to have a pleasant highway drive with them on -carrying kids and/or wife- averaging ~180 km/h w/o barely noticing it and with power enough to overtake with a huge security margin on b-roads, not to drift like Chris Harris nor late breaking to attack a right turn, so its weight and "feeling like a whale in a bathtub" -which is true- is a nonsense.

    Re: Mercedes E63 S AMG Edition 1 (2018) - Short Review (incomplete)

I already did some spirited driving around Lake Garda. Surprisingly, the E63S feels heavy on straights but completely changes it's character in curves, as if it suddenly looses 300 kg. Amazing setup!

Still need to play around with the driving programs though...

Of course I wouldn't have taken the E63S without kids, it wouldn't make sense but for a four door sedan, this car is amazing fun and definitely sportier and faster than any SUV on the market.

Now imagine tuning this puppy to 800 hp... 😉 (no, I won't do it).

In US, you are only about $4k away from that 800HP (my dealer offers it and continues warranty coverage)

Sounds great but 800 hp would require different chargers.

"Reliable" software tuning is possible up to 700 hp, maybe slightly more.

Already talked to a tuner here I know. There is also a piggyback tuning available, adding around 80 hp but one minor malfunction and you risk a major engine damage. Not recommended for the E63S, too many sensors/parameters involved. All mods are factory detectable and even worse, Brabus reports(!) all mods to Mercedes, they seem to have a specific agreement. In exchange, they seem to get less "headwind" than other tuners and better "access" to cars.

The problem in Germany is: The moment the repair shop "hooks up" your car to the Mercedes tester, the diagnosis data and other parameters are sent to the Mercedes servers. This is how they easily detect mods. Once your VIN is blacklisted...

If my dealer would "support" tuning, I would probably do it.

It's RC's new car, so of course it does everything amazingly well and better than everyone else's. Whale in a bathtub? No way. He flicked the suspension setting to Sport and now it drives better than anything short of an R8.

I believe if RC had to rate the top 3 handling cars in the world, it would go something like:

    1. R8
    2. E63 S
    3. Tie between 991.2 GTS Cabrio/Mini JCW

Well, I guess you can let RC chime in rather than getting hurt feelings through osmosis.

    Re: Mercedes E63 S AMG Edition 1 (2018) - Short Review (incomplete)

According to Renntech, E63S already is close to 700HP stock, they get it up to 770HP with a simple ECU.

Some dealers work with Renntech and do not report the mods to MBUSA obviously, what the factory people do not see they can not punish.

I had 17 various AMGs since 2001, modded all of them and had Status 8 (warranty voided) only once, back in 2007 on my SL65 when a newly hired Service Advisor blabbed to a Factory Rep about a Kleemann LSD in that car (the Rep was called in because the dealer had trouble diagnosing excessive wheel hop).

I took the blame on the spot to protect the dealer from severe repercussions (they installed the differential among a host of other mods), knowing full well the "damage " is already done and wanting the dealer to continue modding my future cars.

Dealer fired the "talkative" SA anyway.

Take it easy mate, I just said what I said, which is that these cars are not intended to be driven on twisties despite you accidentally ende up on a mountain road one day. They might feel like a whale in a bathtub, maybe not, but this isn't their natural enviroment.

Hope you enjoy your future M5 in good health, for sure it'll be a hell of a car!

    Re: Mercedes E63 S AMG Edition 1 (2018) - Short Review (incomplete)

I love this discussion, it's what I"m  weighing back and forth with...   the Alfa Guilia Q is  5-6 hundred pounds less than the current M5.   All my miles are twisty mountain roads.   I don't drive much over the speed limit, just because someday there will be a log truck and bicycle rider coming at you around a bend...   But I do like feeling the balance and precision of the car.  I ride horses, and so I equate a nimble car to my horse that can turn on a dime.   What I don't like in a car after 100 turns in the road is the feeling of weight, body roll, excessive tire wear.   So yes,  RC, does the E63s feel heavy, does it wear on you after 50 turns?   The E63s is at least 100 kg heavier than the M5,  and again, I'm guessing that the M5 Competition with a stiffer suspension/ chassis, lower, more power, stiffer engine mount capacity, and improved exhaust Will be a fun ride in the mountains, and one that you don't feel like you're flogging around each bend. Yes, you're not going to be able to keep up with a GT3, but then who's really going to risk killing others at that speed.

    Re: Mercedes E63 S AMG Edition 1 (2018) - Short Review (incomplete)

I can assure you that the drive feel isn't even close to a whale in a bathtub LOL but it lacks the razor sharp steering precision and go-kart feel of my R8 for example. The excessive weight of the E63 is felt mainly during braking.

    Re: Mercedes E63 S AMG Edition 1 (2018) - Short Review (incomplete)

After driving over 2300 km in the E63S, lately incl. some spirited driving, I'd say that the Achilles heel of the car is the brake. The pedal feel is a bit too soft and lacks the "precision" of Porsche's PCCB. The tires are surprisingly capable but  I cannot say for how long. The tire temperature goes up to 54-56 deg C pretty fast and I assume that if I'd take it to the track, it would easily exceed 60-70 deg C and this is definitely too much for the PZero road tire.

Guys, the E63S is a lot of fun but it is no real sportscar, this needs to be clear. It is however a nice compromise for people like me who cannot drive a sportscar all the time.

I would like to know your views on the M5 as compared to the AMG. I presume you have driven the BMW already.

Was your choice based on your preferred characteristics for a car of this type or you chose the Mercedes for other reasons?

It appears that the "car du jour" is the BMW.

No, I didn't have the chance yet, no time. 😩

Car du jour? 😂 I chose the E63S for a reason (mainly sound, interior but also looks). I drive a R8 V10 Plus, I don't care about anything "car du jour". In Germany, I think that there is no such thing as which one (E63 or M5) is more "in", both have their fan base but I think that Porsche lost a lot of street cred here because nobody talks about the Panamera anymore (yes, I know...more of a S class competitor but still...). Actually, the E63 and the M5 seem to be the only competitors in this class, especially since Audi hasn't presented a new RS6 yet.

they targeted the wrong class...Smiley but I believe they thought to chose the easy one where S63 or Audi S8 or Top 7 series are just super fat whales with powerful engines or CLS63 Wagon now with the turismo.

the Pany seats just in between and indeed belongs to no proper class. they should have jumped straight into the E63/RS6/M5 class and it would have been a big success but they probably feared them Smiley.
