    Yeah, but except of the M-versions they end up in one big muffler at the end of the car.
    I could imagine the M3 has a set-up similiar to the M5 with two seperate pipes beginning at the manifolds!

    The E46-M3 has 2 manifolds (3 into 1) but they lead into only ONE muffler as you say with four tips sticking out of the one single muffler. I would like to know what is the advantage of a four tiped muffler over dual tipped (besides looks ). The previous similar engined straight 6 E36-M3 had one muffler also but with the logical two pipes sticking out of the one muffler.

    The M5 on the other hand is the real thing, the two separate manifolds lead to FOUR exhausts (grouped in pairs at each side) with a tip each.

    I could imagine it is for styling reasons only - and to have a family-wide apperance with four exhaust tips throughout the whole model range!

    Anyways, since Italian design studios design Korean SUVs that have no heritage at all and quite a few car manufacturers move down to "styling" instead of true "design" quad-tipped exhaust should be one of the minor things to complain about!

    The huge issue about wheels is their weight - this results in worse or better unsprung weight and therefore ride comfort and handling on rough surfaces but also in worse or better ac- and deceleration!
    If weight improvement wouldn't have occurred in the recent past, nobody would use 19" wheels on a sportscar! Still I might believe that there is quite a huge proportion on looks also - it is no surprise that designers tend to draw sporty cars with fairly oversized wheels (little secret...)!

    This is kind of a dumb question. If you really want a quad exhaust, you need 4 headers and 4 mufflers. Sorry dude.

    Even if the 2 pipes goes into one muffler on each side (instead of a Y-pipe), it's still poseur and totally for looks. Saying they "function" doesn't mean they didn't play with things. It just means they designed the muffler with a little more surface area for pipe fittings, or they used smaller pipes (say 2" instead of 2.5").

    I have no problem with the "quad look" exhaust. I had it on my M roadster and really liked it. You can argue all you want, but in the end it's just a look game.

    Have you ever seen the Porsche Tequipment for quad-type exhaust on the 996? Just tips, strictly for looks.


    As long as it looks good, people will buy it. There's really nothing wrong with it. Now if you hang a 5" coffee can exhaust off a Honda Civic, well, then that's a different story.

    The Elise is an absolutely wonderful car. It gets amazing lap times, period, and if you take into account the power deficit, you'll be even more amazed. In a comparison done by Evo magazine, an Exige (hardtop, special Elise) was compared with a GT3 RS, Ferrari CS, and a Noble. The article claims that it was neither outclassed nor outpaced on public roads. That is an incredible feat for the price. Another point is that even if you find a faster car that weighs more, will it be as fun to throw around?

    I guess you can tell that I'm a fan. The only thing that would concern me is lackluster acceleration above 100 mph.
