    RMS Leaking

Any MY 2006 or 2007 got this problem?
I read through the forum, I only see MY 2005 have this problem. So it got fixed?
If we get this problem after the warranty, what's then? Fix for free or we have to pay? How much?

    Re: RMS Leaking

I did have a transmission leak on my '06, as did another person that I know. Not the same as RMS, but equally annoying. It happened around 16K miles.

    Re: RMS Leaking

Just had the RMS replaced this week on my 2005 997S after 13K miles. It's under warranty so it was a no brainer. According to the dealer tech the seal has been improved and is much better. We'll see!

From what I've read I don't think any water cooled 997 is immune from RMS.

    Re: RMS Leaking

My 2006 C2S has just had the seal changed...

    Re: RMS Leaking

This RMS is a "cosmetic" issue. These cars are so trouble free that RMS is exploded out of proportion. People always have to complain about something don't they?

    Re: RMS Leaking

I had RMS in my first engine (MY2005) no RMS in my replacement (touch wood).

    All work completed under waranty.

    Re: RMS Leaking

Here's what's generally accepted as true:

The RMS leak potential will always be there unless Porsche either changes the engine design or spends alot more money individually machining each engine to mate seal with crankcase and crankshaft.

Most likely if you get a leak it will be fixed the first time (new tool and technique for repair) and you'll probably be fine for the lifetime of the engine.

If it doesn't get fixed after three attempts Porsche replaces the engine.

What also seems true: if your engine is destined to get the leak, it happens early - well before warrenty expires.

RMS is no big deal, just a PITA. They'll take care of it.

For me, it was as much of a PITA as taking the car in for a service. Bring it in in the morning, get it back at the end of the day. Even got some recalls taken care of. No big deal. Haven't had any problems since (I'm at 18K miles).

    Re: RMS Leaking

No problem on my 2005 MY 997C2S up to 21,000 miles, but on Tuesday my 2006 C4S goes in to investigate an oil leak, possibly RMS.

    Re: RMS Leaking

Hopefully, all owners here give a vote, then we can get a big picture.

    Re: RMS Leaking

25% have the leaking, which is a pretty high percentage.

    Re: RMS Leaking

There are many different sources of oil leaks in that "area" of the engine, but they all typically get called "RMS", when it's not really the "rear main oil seal".

    Re: RMS Leaking

Thinking my car is getting it... Tomorrow visiting the OPC

    Re: RMS Leaking

2007 GT3, 2 RMS fixed so far, 1,600 and 4,800 miles. 2 track weekends between the 2 RMS.

I thought the GT1 derived engine in the GT3 was relatively immune to RMS leak. This is the first I hear of it in that engine. Having said that, I'm not naive enough to think that it couldn't happen.

    Re: RMS Leaking

My MY06 (oct/nov '05 deliv) had an RMS failure dicovered on inspection after the 1st 20 k mile service which was late last year.

No issues since, although I have recently thrashed it around France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria and the oil has gone down a bit (!).

I also am surprised to hear of a possible GT3 issue - I suspect the leak may be from a different location.

    SoS.

    Re: RMS Leaking

    me 2,
    what about the GT2?!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (RMS is complicated), but GT2 is a different engine from 997 Carrera, with a more stoutly supported crankshaft, much less prone to RMS.

    Re: RMS Leaking

Any car can get a RMS leak, like any other leak, and so has happenend to GT3s but not in the frecuency of the Carrera engine which is an inherent flaw in its design and is ridiculously prone to it. Since the GT3, TT and GT2 have a different design, they rarely get a RMS leak.

I'm happy and not so happy at the same time...
My car is a 04/05 built. So since i have the RMS-leak now, it's just in the toleration period of porsche-belgium to have it fixed with no costs...
BUT... the OPC told me that the clutches of the 997S are very weak and mostly defective before the car reaches 60K, they propose to have it changed while the engine is out of the car now. Otherwise it would probably happen that in a year from here i have to replace it anyway and have to pay the cost of removing the engine again...
So not so happy about that!
My Renault Avantime V6 has 168.000km on it with its first clutch!
So i'm really disappointed in porsches quality... for the first time in my life

    Re: RMS Leaking

I don't know about that, I'm very close to reaching 60,000km now and clutch is as good as new.

It's a selfadjusting cutch: it's gone before you notice... Mine is OK thus far also.

    Permit me to add:

Only 997_S_ has the self-adjusting clutch.

One of it's main advantages is that it: "Substantially extends the service life of the clutch mechanism and ensures the required amount of pedal pressure remains constant throughout the service life." from publication PNA 489 421 05

    Re: RMS Leaking

I would suggest that driving style will determine the longevity of a clutch. There may be a bench mark but again it's only a bench mark.

It is worth renewing the clutch when fixing the RMS. It saves the labour charge for the clutch change. Clutch is a consumable item and it gradually perishes so it is not as if it suddenly goes from 100% to zero. A new clutch is better than one with 60,000km on it.

    Re: RMS Leaking

Car is back in business! Monday i got an appointment, thursday and today in the OPC , now safe and sane at home!

Thx OPC for the very quick and costless service!

(they had to replace the clutch... otherwise it would have been necessary in a few months)

    Re: RMS Leaking

2005 997 with 45,000 miles. Under warranty-dealer corrected the problem- one day service.

    Re: RMS Leaking

    Hi vern,

    which dealer that you sent?
    Is a 997 or 997S?

    thank you

By 'costless' do you mean they didn't charge for the clutch parts?

I had exactly the same situation last week. i.e. my car '05 (997S) went in for RMS under extended warranty.

Following morning they rang to say the clutch was showing some wear and they could replace it now so saving me labour charges at a later date. I wasn't 100% sure it wasn't a con, because in 27 years of Porsche ownership, I'd never needed a replacement clutch before. This included one model in which I clocked over 200,000 miles!

My car had done only 25,000 miles and the clutch didn't slip or show any signs of wear... Still I thought - probably better to save over Pounds700 in labour while I can.

However, it wasn't exactly costless! The clutch cost Pounds427.50 and the 'clutch release' a further Pounds114.43. - that's Pounds541.93.

Still not sure it was totally necessary but, if it was, it's better than a future bill for Pounds1400...

The only thing I will say is that the clutch feels a bit lighter than it used to...
