    Alpine A110

I went today for a short  '' test '' drive with an Alpine A110 .

That car intrigued me since I saw it at the Geneva Show last year . Very liight car for todays standard ( around 1100 kg ) , loads of aluminium , central engine , small , looks good without being too much , thought it could be a real fun little car for every day .

I had a 40 min drive in it with the salesman sitting next to me . So it was not really a test , just a spirited drive on country roads .

The car is very well thought . Every piece has been made as light as possible, nice little details everywhere . Makes me think of the first TT when it came out . Different then the competition . And the Alpine pushes it even further with it s mid engine and excellent chassis . A chassis not too stiff for a DD , but sporty enough to feel in a sports car . A good compromise .

The handling is excellent !!! The low weight is such an enjoyment that speeds all the way into the superb breaking , the balance .

Steering in normal mode is a bit too soft and distant but in sports mode it gets better . Could still be a bit better .

The engine has enough power , but then, I am not a fan of  the turbo, even if the lag is not too bad .... for a french mass produced engine .

The car is high in demand . Over a year waiting list . About 5200 orders . This was supposed to be a very small production car . Demand is much higher then anticipated .

Not much space to put stuff in the car . Truck is tiny .

The car is an event when driving it , even when driving slow . I tried a Gold R the other day, and that was utterly boring except when accelerating fully .

The car does feel a bit cheap compared to a Cayman .

Would love it in manual .

All in all , I could see myself owning one as a fun little DD instead of a heavy , over inflated Carrera . This is the way to go .

I would get this over a Cayman in a heartbeat... The only competition is the 4C.

Thank you Gnil!  Too bad this will never see NA importation....  Like you I have thought it was a hit from the moment it was announced - glad to hear the drive is not a letdown.

The sales guy was often mentioning the Cayman as a comparaison . Cayman is more comfortable and feels more expensive inside .  But the Alpine has nailed it with it s weight  . It is incredible how 300 kg less make a car so much fun when driving on speed limited roads .

The 4C is much more hard core compared to it . It could not be a DD . The Alpine comes in two versions , one called Pure and one called Legend . The legend has more comfortable seats .  This car is easily drivable as a DD .

Also good point, there are maybe 10 options . That's it . Keep it simple .

Porsche should come out with a new 911 ,  a special model , sizing it like an air cooled , and keeping the weight under 1200 kg with options . That would be fun again .

    - glad to hear the drive is not a letdown.

A lot of work has been put into having the best balance possible .  Tipping point is exactly under the seats . The car feels  flat regarding mass distribution . The low eight is the big enjoyment . In every curb, every time you break , every change of direction, you feel the low weight , making the car extremely agile and nimble .

I was not a fan of the engine , even if it works rather well and has with it s 250 HP enough power for public roads ..... But it is a bit too refined . It would not be a deal breaker though . ideally, but probably impossible , a small V6  or inline 6  NA would be  fantastic .

I would wait with this assessment, it wasn't different with the 4C until...it wasn't.

I wish Alpine good luck (not a fan of the design, too Japanese, loved the classic car design much more) but this is a tough market. The Toyota GT86 isn't really a hit either and so many people praised it.

Personally I'm not a big fan of the new Alpine, though I haven't driven it I just saw it in person, but I applaud these cars and manufacturers brave enough to bring them out to the market, I hope its a big success.

After the senseless "HP war" which IMO missed the point of what sportscars and sporty cars are all about, I hope the "weight war" is the new war kiss

Since the car is primarily for EU a manual version makes zero sense. Plus Alpine has a huge image problem to overcome since it is a “vintage” label. By going PDK only they reinforce the idea that they are technologically advanced and looking to the future. Manual is just milking the customer and looking to the past.

I understand that you preffer a PDK but you also have to respect an owner's opinion if he prefers a manual, he is neither being milked for wanting a manual nor looking to the past. You cant be the judge of that SciFrog. If I were Gnil's position and looking for this car as an option for a DD for local roads I would probably get it manual, wouldnt be a deal braker but given the choice I would tick the manual box, and Im far from melancolic from the past (newer is better for me ragarding cars) but I would do it for the pleasure of driving. The best if we can all choose what we preffer wink

Alpine has a great history in France for rally.

I just remind that first edition was limited to 1960 units I think and sold out in less than 24h...angel

Car is a success at the moment and all journalist reviews enforced it a bit more.

They plan to do a manual if the demand is there. kiss

RC is very much into power and into German manufacturers. There was a time when the french were there, hope this time is back again. Obviously, they are not entering the hp war with big engines. They are focus on the emotion of driving small sport cars. Megane RS is a success as well as all other Renault Sport cars. Alpine was developed by them for a reason.

A detail: The previous Alpine sportscars from the late 50s until the mid 90s were rear engined cars with a 2+2 arrangement.  Very similar the contemporary 911.

Other Renault were also rear engined in the old days. We had for some years a leftover car in the family, a Renault Dauphine from the 60s that my grandmother used to drive, on which the original Alpine A108 was based.

Thanks for your report, Gnil kiss I like the concept a lot (less weight, hence less hp needed, not too big but regardless with some DD capabilities). Should be very nice on the great driving roads around your place - the brand "Alpine" makes even more sense there devil

As for Renault and reliability: I am amazed what kind of beatings the Megane RS can take at the Ring without problems Smiley

Renaults are crap when it comes to road cars, same as Fiat.

Everyone I ever met driving a Renault was either a hippie, a "Green", a drunk ("wine lover") or a student. 😜

Tradition? What do I care about tradition? I care about driving fun.

So when did you get your last French car? 😉

The only Renault I like is the Megane RS, a good offer for it's price tag.

I am not only into German cars but part of enjoying a car is reliability, easy/cheap maintenance and fast access to service/parts.

    Re: Alpine A110

The Alpine A 110 has been awarded 5 Stars in a recent Autocar test. Such rating is not very frequent and it is an achievement by Renault.

However, if we read the Verdict and the remarks underneath the #2 (Cayman) and #3 (M2) it is obvious that the Alpine is an automotive success especially from Renault,  but the rankings are quite subjective and may I say arbitrary.

The order of the top 3 could be shuffled in any other way someone wanted to.

    Re: Alpine A110

When respecting speed limits, the Alpine is much , much more fun then a Cayman . That is probably why it is ranked before .  M2 and Cayman have to be driven fast for emotions . The Alpine gives you all you want at normal speeds . The  very low weight and center of gravity exactly under your ass , makes it playful at all times . That is the difference .

Going from the Alpine into a Cayman or M2 is like jumping from a GT3 into a Panamera Turbo S , in terms of luxury feel and emotions

The Autocar test narrative is extremely enthusiastic. Their qualitative remarks about the road behaviour of the car are faultless.

Also in the English language edition of the CAR magazine there is an equally positive drive narrative. Although they chose the Ford Fiesta ST as their comparison benchmark.

When I tried the car , the salesman was always talking about the Cayman . On the luxury, finishing feel , quality of materials , the Alpine is definitely under a Cayman . Even thought there are  carbon bits here and there , everything feels '' lighter '' , less solid . Maybe that's why they compare it to the Fiesta . I sat in a Fiesta RS the same day . The Fiesta feels very under the Alpine as to the interior . The Fiesta interior is common, the Alpine is unique with lots of details . Center console is slightly like in a Mc-Laren .
