    Finally...M5 gets AWD

A customer of mine works for BMW development and today he came in a partially camouflaged (that black/white stickers) 5 series. The car looked like the M5 (exhaust system, brakes) and I asked him if he isn't afraid with so much power now that it snowed (we had some white stuff on the roads this morning...) and he smiled and told me...Allrad (AWD).

Finally...the M5 gets AWD, not sure if this has been mentioned or rumored before but now it seems to be 100% sure. It was about time. Smiley

Thanks. Finally. A couple of years ago, I would have gone for it but I just realized (after the Panamera Turbo S) that I'm not a sedan guy. With AWD, the M5 is going to be a real beast, no more traction issues. Makes even less sense to go for a (very expensive) Panamera Turbo S instead. Smiley

Do you see Panamera at the same level with Audi A6 or BMW 5-series?

From the dimensions, materials and finishing the Panamera is more 7-series or A8

Look at the dimensions of the 5 series, you'd be surprised. At least the 5 series has more interior room than the (old) Panamera but I agree, the real competition lies more in the 7 series and A8 category.

yes, BMW cars usually have a long wheelbase - thus they could offer plenty of interior space

    The pecking order is:

    1. GT4

    2. 911 (excluding the RS)

    3. All other cars and models (including the RS)

If I was looking for a sedan I would consider the Panamera and A6/5-series on the same level. The A8/7-series feels more luxurious and less sporty. Then again, that is only my perception.

The M5 getting AWD was a done deal when the E63 got it, along with the release of the RS7. There have been pics of the M5 mule with AWD on the Internet for a few months.

Still prefer the RWD version, luckily here we dont need balanced 4WD version Smiley but I do agree it´s a smart move from BMW, it really needs this version for Central and North European markets to keep up with the competition and offer a proper car for severe winter conditions.

It looks like the BMW owner had to take a hammer to the hood to get enough clearance to close it. LOL. That turbo is massive.

    Re: Finally...M5 gets AWD

Needs some new shocks in the rear to handle the power and speed. That was one scary ride and if he had lost control ahead of the Bugatti it would have been nasty. Totally agree about the turbo bolt on power being cheap and easy though. Nothing like turbo boost once you are used to it.

Smiley AWD is perfect for the M5. Most M5 owners want traction, they don't want to drift along on public roads. Smiley

Like many here my first sport car was a BMW, a childhood dream, a red coupe 325i manual. It was a fantastic car. Since the Bangle era that hasn't been one BMW that even came close to the wishlist as even Audi and Mercedes seem nicer offerings. Sad.

Engines are going turbo, and with that comes incredible amounts of torque. That torque is fully available at around 1500 rpm. Both Merc and Audi have turbo engines in their comparable cars. They have AWD in the E63 and RS7, as Porsche does in the Panamera Turbo. You need it get the power down, or the car faces serious limitations on the street, and that's why the default setting in the BMW is "Comfort Mode". The M5 has traction issues that can only be helped with AWD. If you floor an M5 at 120km/h in the rain without traction control on, you're in the ditch. BMW is the last to the AWD drive party, but they can't hold out forever. I seriously can't figure out what your issue with BMW is.Smiley

    Re: Finally...M5 gets AWD

    Some issues present and/or past:

    - design
    - no AWD for sporty daily driver
    - terrible infotainment
    - lack of large 7 seater SUV
    - poor seat confort and interior in recent 3 series
    - implementation of driving aid technologies behind Audi
    - loss of the "cool comfy and sporty combo" image

I agree with everything you pointed out but BMW has very good (lease Smiley) offers in Germany and by good I mean amazing, so people choose BMW for obvious reasons. Not so sure how their prices/offers are in other countries though.

The infotainment system is fine, you get used to it and it's easy to use. Design? Compared to what? They all look the same to me, Audi, Merc, and BMW. Audi has great interiors though. Doesn't the X5 have an optional 3rd row?

Aesthetics aside, the gripe I have with most modern cars it that the soul has been engineered right out of them. The 996 was garbage, and the non-GT 997s and up have no personality. Cars these days put up great numbers in terms of efficiency and performance, but they aren't fun to drive anymore at everyday speeds. Prices for 993s are higher than used 997s for a reason.

Not sure what you meant about AWD, as it's available in all non-M vehicles.

I have to agree with you though, not easy to find a car with "personality" nowadays but there are still some out there, not many though.

I remember my first 330ci, and how much fun it was to drive with only around 230hp. The build quality was great, and it had style and character. I don't miss too many cars, but that and my E46 M3 are the exceptions.

    Re: Finally...M5 gets AWD

Quality isn't bad even nowadays (depending on model) but I think that with the next generation of models, BMW will try to catch up in the technology and quality field.
