I had a 993 Targa, actually my first Porsche and first 911.
Funny story: I drove a BMW M3 E36 before (at it's time, basically the monster to have, there was nothing cheaper/faster in that price range) and switched to the 993 Targa without(!) a test-drive. Big mistake. The first time I got behind the wheel in the 993 Targa, it felt like being thrown back 20 years in automotive technology. No kidding.
From a driver's point of view, the car was a catastrophe. Not even close to the driving dynamics and safety of the M3 E36. The 993 Targa felt like 20 years older than the M3.
On the other hand, I liked the design, the interior and the sound the car made. Very emotional, very Porsche.
I switched to the first 996 Carrera once it came out because driving dynamics of the 993 Targa was no fun, the car was fun to drive in a "Beetlesque" kind of way but I didn't really enjoy driving it very fast.
Why did I get a 993 Targa then? Stupidity. Actually, the sales guy himself didn't recommend it. Seriously.
I wanted a Boxster, it was a pretty spectacular car at it's time and I wanted to try something new. Delivery time was around 12-24 months, so no chance. Then, I spotted a 968 CS, wonderful car, badly wanted it because it suited my needs perfectly. My father, who agreed to pay 1/3 of the cost, was against it. So much money for a 4-cyl. Porsche? No way. So I ended up with a "last year" 993 Targa, which was available at a special price of 117k DM. Brand-new.
So while I like how the 993 looks, I'm no fan of the technology.
