Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

    Hi,

I'm getting to spec the dealers launch TT cab, and just cant decide on a color. First I put in GT silver, thinking it's safe and easy to take care of. Then I saw the photos of the black TT cab posted here, and now think I will change to black. I know lots like basalt, and I'm sure it will be a little easier to maintain, but I've seen it many times and it always looks dusty, or spotty, even when clean due to the metallic. Flat black is more striking to my eye.

Anyone else gone through this conflict? I mean with no disrespect, as I have owned GT silver, and now have arctic on my cab, but silver never has the wow factor that a clean black car has.

Any photos of basalt or black to help? Can I get some moral support?

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

Go with black and take a class at Meguiars. It will be awesome.

Which products from Meguiars do you suggest?

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

I went with black on my TT and it is a love hate relationship! I think it is by far the best color for the TT.

Be warned that the black paint on Porsches is the softest I have ever seen and micro scratches even with the best of care will occur, I'm currently looking into the micro coating atomic had done to reduce them.

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

Plain black surely is a very striking colour, but only if it's absolutely clean. Shades of dirt make it look bad IMO. Also the problem of scratches won't get worse with any other colour than plain black. So maybe basalt is something of a good compromise.
I had the chance to drive a basalt black Targa 4S lately and was positively surprised how good basalt looked, as I didn't have expected that.

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

I'm going for std black (on a GT3) but will have it professionally polished once a month to counter the problem with micro scratches.

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

    I like Basalt black

These are all pictures of cars in Basalt black

    997TT

    Carrera GT

    RUF 993 BTR

It has a metallic shine to it which looks really good!

Going through exactly the same thing. Also have an Artic 997 S cab now. Have owned numerous black cars & trucks including a black 996 turbo (pic below). If the turbo cab I plan to get was a weekend car I'd consider black but I will use it everyday which means even if I get to wash & detail it once a week it's still going to look dirty 6 days out of 7. But then again nothing looks as good as black imo when it's fresh off a detail but the more miles the more it shows it's age too. Everything starts to show in the paint and while it's a labor of love for the first year or so it eventually becomes a losing battle (for an everyday car at least).................The Artic is a great looking car and has been the easiest car to maintain looking new from any that I've had. Unlike black it doesn't require a wax with every other or third wash just to keep the clear coat looking deep without fine scratches. A few small things really help w/ maintaing black, one of them being the materials you use to wash & dry. A heavy water soaked cotten towel is hard on the clear coat so for the past few years I've been using a boars hair brush for washing I've found that it helps keep the layer of wax on the car much longer. Also use a special micro fiber absorbant towel to dry instead of cotten (w/ leaves lint) w/ seperate micro fiber towels & speed shine between washes. Anyway, sorry to get off track bottom line for me - I plan to keep my turbo cab a few years at least. I know how I am regarding how my cars look and know black can take away some of the fun of ownership (for me). I'm seriously considering basalt though, that's why I asked for basalt turbo pics a couple of weeks ago. I'm thinkin triple black (w/ basalt) if not then either Artic or GT-Silver. I agree the black looks awesome but the Artic & GT-silver also add a depth of contrast w/ a black interior/blck top that black can't match. Du no for sure yet, guess that doesn't help you much.

You're looking for basalt pic., guys were good enough to post some here:

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

This is a great basalt pic andrea posted

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

Another by andrea. Kept it oversized so you can see the metallic in the basalt.

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

Another one that shows basalt well. by andrea.

basalt looks grayish in the sun, standard black looks much deeper with the right wax. Get standard black if you are ready to wash it once a week and wax it every couple of months.

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

stunning pictures. Any one have pics of standard black for comparison (pref in the sun).

Not completely in the sun, but you get the idea.

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

I am in my last Black car......... Black is not a color its a JOB

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

Basalt is a great color and probably easier than black to maintain, but somehow it looks dull and seems it needs to be waxed some more. :q

Interior colour was grey, which looked fine with the basalt black, although I'm not a particular fan of grey interiors.

The Targa 4S was great. Not much difference between the 997S and the Targa4S, at least when the roads are dry, which they were at the time. Car was very comfortable, but that was partly due to its winter tyres.

Concerning the roof I was very positive about the Targa mechanism. I'm not the biggest fan of Cabrios when it comes to sports cars, so the Targa is something like the best compromise in my eyes. The glass gives a very airy, open impression in the cabin, even if the roof is closed. The additional sun visor blocks most of the sun if you feel it's getting too hot. Opening the rear window is a great feature and gives you an easy access to the additional luggage area behind the seats. When fully openend, you have a rather big opening in the roof, totally different to the cramped standard sunroof.

Only (little) flaw is the fact that the roof when fully opened blocks a part of your rear view, no matter if you look over your shoulder or in the rear mirror. But this is really the only negative aspect I can think of. If you don't want a cab but want best of both worlds, cab and coupé, the Targa surely is a modell to remember.

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

Here's another pic with the rear window open.

And another one of the grey interior with roof fully opened.

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

thanks for the additional pics, the car looks great. Did you notice any squeeks/rattles from the sunroof?

Car had something like 7000km, but I noticed no squeaks, rattles whatoever.

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

go for basalt. you just won't regret it.

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

Black is best for those with a dedicated staff...

Re: Basalt black or regular black on new cab?

Black . . . easy call for me.
